New vs Old: Test driving a Scania 140 and a Scania S 730 V8

  • With nearly a half century between them, it might not be a fair comparison to put the Scania 140 up against a brand new Scania S 730. Though we thought it'd be fun to do it anyway. We invited four veteran Scania drivers to the Scania Demo Centre in Södertälje, Sweden, where they got to drive and compare the two trucks head to head.

@@Jan_372 Still, the least amount of sound is preferrable. Being a petrolhead i like the sound of a big fat v8, litrebike or italian supercar just as much as the next guy. However when i'm working i want to just be able to listen to listen to the radio without having to turn it up to drown out the noise of an engine at a constant rpm.
Seeing how we have to drive trough towns and city centres a lot aswell (as many euro truck drivers have to) at all hours of the day i think the people trying to get a good nights sleep agree with me too.

I got a ride in a Scania S730 V8 and that's definitely worth it if you're a big Scania V8 fan! It's quick to accelerate and it's quite comfortable to sit in too. No wonder Scania writes this is a first class truck ... and four steps up and into the truck is some getting used to. But when you get in there you instantly feel the luxury of the truck. Not to forget that power of the monstrous engine it got.

And the scanias were leaps ahead of the likes of aec , erf etc of the time ! So coming out of an old british truck into the 140 was almost like the same as coming out of the 140 into the new scania

Scania trucks are really powerful and safe, I used to drive a scania 420 with a mounted huge Fassi F1500 crane plus a payload of 10ton cargo, moving upslope is never a problem for a scania

The old trucks were very reliable because they didn't have computers, so when you would get stranded in the bush, then you could fix
any problem with a swiss army knife, a hammer and ductape, but the downside was that they already start to rust in the brochure
and comfort was a word that didn't excist in the european truckers world, so loud as hell, and hot as an oven in the summer because no
airco, and i even heared truckers about 50 degrees in the truck when they tried to sleep, and that heat came from the engine that ran
all day. And even the seats were uncomfortable so you were happy to take your 1 hour rest after a few hours behind the wheel.
Now the new ones are all comfortable and drving one is like drving a large rv, because it has the same comfort and all the gadgets,
but when something breaks down, you don't need a mechanic but a nerd with a laptop, and all the broken parts cost a small fortune
so modern trucks will never become a oldtimer because their computers won't last forever and i even heared that wirings are
made of a bio degradable plastics that disolve after 15-20 years, so it will become impossible to keep a modern truck running.
And they are designed in way to make it waaay easier to recycle them and that way alot of parts got weaker and break down easier,
so the days of longlivety and quality in trucks and cars are over alright.
I have a mercedes sprinter van and the engine has this cheap plastic bracket that holds the fuelfilter in place and is also having
water channels that runs to other components, and a hassle to replace because it takes a dwarf with small hands to get anywere,
and the whole idea of a plastic bracket that is mounted to the engineblok is such a disaster waiting to happen, because those
plastics will harden and cruble or start to deform and then leaks will happen. So it's all crap that they built today
and you can't even recognize a engine anymore because when you open the hood and remove the plastic tupperware engine cover
then what you see next looks like the internals of a washingmachine, because it's all hoses, electric wires and sensors
and somewere down there there's something that they call an engine block. Well the engines i know had a straight 4 or 6 cilinder block
with the exhaust on one side, the intake on the other side and the valve cover on top, and all the belt driven stuff at the front where
the radiator lives, and a V8 had a exhaustmaifold on each side, a intake and carbs in the middle, and that was already eye candy,
but now they slab a large plastic lid over the engine, because now it has become a lump of iron that is wrapped in hoses, wires and connectors,
so as if you cut open an animal and look inside his guts. And they are a nighmare to work on because to change the fuel filter
or sparkplugs it takes an hour to remove all the spaghetti on top before you can even reach a sparkplug, so it's almost like
a spinal disk operation on a human, because all the intestines need to be layed aside to get there.

The s730 might have more power but the old 140 has power you can feel, you’re foot controls the throttle linkage and you have to keep grabbing gears to keep her singing, I’m not saying the 730 is a bad truck I’m saying that it’s a completely different experience
