  • How to tie a 3 way rig for walleye. This is a super effective rig for trolling deep water for walleye.
    If you want to troll baits down deep, then this is the rig for you. The 3 way rig allows you to fish shallow diving baits down deep near the bottom where big walleye hang out.
    To tie this walleye rig, all you need is some fluorocarbon leader material, a 3 way swivel, and a floating crankbait.
    Make sure to only use a floating style crankbait with a small bill. The idea is to keep the bait suspended off the bottom.
    Start by tying a loop in a section of leader material. I usually do this by tying a figure 8 knot. This loop is used to attach your weight to help get the bait down deep.
    Make this dropper section about a foot long, and attach the free end to the 3 way swivel.
    Next, attach a 3-5' section of leader to another eye on the 3 way swivel, and the opposite end of leader gets attached to your bait.
    At this point, just attach the last eye on the 3-way swivel to your mainline, and you are ready to get after those deep water walleye.

    Very good video. One little comment here: wet your line just before you tighten the knot.

    One tip with this rig is use lighter line for your sinker. If you get snagged you can break the sinker off without risk of losing your lure.

      Agreed I always use 6lb test mono with a 15lb braid mainline

    • @wantsome-zs5sq
      @wantsome-zs5sq Před měsícem

      @@misterbulger I've tried braid a few times and I use it in some instances but I still prefer mono for everything else. I don't like braid on spinning reels. If you get a tangle you can lose half your spool and it's a nightmare to fix.

    Wet the knots on fluorocarbon and mono to prevent the line from burning and creating weak points upon cinching the knot down.

    What weight line is your main and the sinker line should be less to save lure.

    This is a good rigging idea to get depth. I use a somewhat similar setup except I use two stick baits, a deep diving stick bait and a shallow floating stick bait. The deep diving stick bait drags the shallow running stick bait down. Usually it gets the depth necessary because when the walleye are suspended at 30 to 40 feet they are sticking upwards. If my graph is telling me that they are deeper down i can use line clips and weights to get the necessary depth. However, the two stick bait system usually gets me to the desired depth.

      @@tribalkilly8660 That is an interesting thought, I never thought of it that way. I fish Lake Ontario on the Canadian side. I have never been stopped by the DNR but it might be a good idea for me to ask them. Thanks for the suggestion. Ironically, the majority of my hook ups are on the the higher floating stick bait. It has also produced several large Muskie which are found here in the St. Lawrence River / Lake Ontario east end. Thanks have a great day.

      @@G8AR I know if you add a slider to a downrigger it’s considered 2 lines! But I like the idea I’m not sure the legality of it tho here but I’m going to look into it.

    EXCELLENT KNOT DEMOS, I would not Recomend a " Appears to be a Norman Speed clip" I would
    only use a small wide bend loop snap, also Greatly recommended a " Thundermist 3 way swivel" , for no tangle issues; more expensive but worth every penny. Great weight change idea.

    • @ML-ks2lj
      @ML-ks2lj Před 2 lety

      You don't need 2 pounds unless you are way out in current or by the bridge. Towards st Clair or even the mouth of black river you can get away with lighter weight.

    • @ML-ks2lj
      @ML-ks2lj Před 2 lety

      And if you chose that make sure you have about 40 pound main line and about a 20 or 30 pound sinker line so when you do snag up. Because you will you only lose your sinker. I use 8-17 pound fluorocarbon leaders down there by the bridge and trolling spoons. Good luck. If you get towards south Park more and even by the mouth of black river at the waste water treatment plant make sure your ready to defend yourself. Some of them guys are rough down there and think they own the joint.

    • @DiabloOutdoors
      @DiabloOutdoors Před 2 lety

      Poppers are surface lures. This rig is to bring your lures close to the bottom. And it's ill-advised to cast with that...

    • @TheTruth-ge7fj

      2 or 3 ft max from weight to swivel , maybe 4 ft long from lure to swivel

    • @DiabloOutdoors
      @DiabloOutdoors Před 2 lety +1

      The faster you troll the less your rig will sink. Keep that in mind. You will "feel" your weight hitting the bottom so use that as an indication. "Speed" is a combination of your boat speed and the current if any.

      At the end of the day, three way rigs are pretty versatile and used in many forms of fishing. You can put pretty much anything you want on the end as long as the action of the bait/lure is correct.

      David, NO PROBLEM, You can use pretty much any light weight spoon, lure stick bait," Preferably a floating Rapala" NOTE: Let weight just tick bottom intermittently, so you know your holding at proper depth. zap a section of PVC pipe close to you, against boat bench, to keep close view , control reel , line depth. Its frustrating to lean over to regular rod holder, trying to make adjustments, and steer boat at same time.
