Ergonomically Speaking!
Let’s start at the very beginning with basic sewing ergonomics. Sewing industry insider Janet Pray shows how to sew more efficiently and comfortably with good sewing ergonomics on "It’s Sew Easy." She talks about work posture, creating a comfortable work surface, and using feed dogs correctly. She demonstrates sewing straight and curved seams without pins using Brother International Corporation’ Innov-is VQ2400 Dream Creator with a ¼” sewing foot.

Smart lady! My grandmother was a very good sewer who worked in a shirt factory. I wish she had lived long enough to teach me what you are showing me here. Thank you.
I really appreciated your instructions for sewing fabric without pins. Excellent instructions. Thank you.
I am so happy Janet is able to carry on her Aunt's school of professional teaching methods.
When I first learned how to sew, I found her Aunt Margaret's videos in the back of sewing magazines in the early '90s. She truly is the queen of home sewing the professional way.
Her videos are now on DVD on Islander website so every person who wants to teach others how to sew can study these professional methods and techniques to teach newbies the right way to sew and have proper sewing ergonomics.
I have and always will honor my teacher, Margaret Islander, and now her niece, Janet Pray.
Their videos, now on DVD, are timeless and should be required for every sewing teacher to study who wants to teach.
There is SO MUCH great information in this short video... Thank you for getting straight to the various points, as well as demonstrating them so well.
Awesome tips.I've been sewing a lot of years and never knew about the curve sewing. We're never too old to learn.Thank you!
Wow! Wish I had been shown these tips/methods 50 yrs. ago. Thank you for my next 50.
What an amazing educator you are Ms Janet Pray. Thanks so very much for such a packed full of information video.
I am so thankful this popped up in my feed today. My husband bought an extension table along with my machine a year ago and I completely forgot about it; I'm getting it out tonight!
I do the curve and straight sewing without even thinking about it. I have worked in a sewing factory for over 20 years. I don't remember anyone telling me how but I just figured out how to do things on my own. This validates what I do.
Janet has transformed my sewing by utilizing these tips. I now enjoy sewing even more. Thank you Janet for sharing your wisdom!!
Love this tutorial. So easy to understand and well presented. Thank you!
WOW, I needed this lesson, especially when I'm trying to match my quilt seems, and I've been pinning like mad! I see exactly what I've been doing wrong. Thank you so much.
I was also taught to straighten out a curved by my sewing teacher many years ago I always wondered what was wrong with my collars I tried your way and what a big difference thank you thank you thank you
Hi Janet. These are great, useful tips for comfortable sewing. I use my machine's walking foot to keep fabric layers sewing/moving along at the same rate. I rarely take this amazing foot off, especially when I'm piecing and joining blocks for quilts. Wonderful for bindings, too. Works so well to keep all layers together, without any bunching. Thanks for your tutorial!
I'd figured out about not straightening the curve, but I'm in awe of how you turned that curved fabric without stopping! I'll have to practice that
Ik moest hem willen zo aub die van 249 dan die wil mijn vriend oké x🐑🐾
Janet, you are my sewing hero. You are so knowledgeable and a talented teacher.
Thank you so much for your tips. They make so much sense.
Wow.. many thx.. always had a problem with the curve..now i know how..so grateful..
So many great tips. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the tips for sewing ergonomically correct. I am going to look for a table insert for my machine, so I can lower the machine into my cabinet and also an insert, I will be able to sew more comfortably. Thanks again...Great tutorial..
Thank you for the wonderful tips!
Awesome tips. Ty so much.
Just was wondering about this yesterday. My back gets so painful. Thank you for posting ergonomics😊
fabulous tips thanks
Thank you so much Janet. I've been sewing for more than 60 years and didn't know about the feed dogs moving the bottom layer more quickly than the foot moved the top. It makes so much sense. I am just setting up a sewing room (luxury) and will definitely be getting myself a flat bed. You are so (sew) easy to watch and listen to. Thanks from a grateful Aussie!
I have just acquired a lovely dedicated sewing room, also. And it Indeed feels like a luxury. What great videos to polish sewing skills with. It’s so much more enjoyable with these specific hints, facts & just more than common sense. Happy Sewing.
Omg this women is a real treasure thank you for all that🌹

Thank you for those tips!
Great tips! Thank you! :)
Very nice video thank you very much
Wow great information! No one explains certain things like extension table and the reason were using pins in the first place! I am going to practice your techiques
Great tutorial on why we need flat sewing surfaces, how to maintain even fabric pieces and sewing on curves.
Janet, I own all your teaching classes from Craftsy.com plus watch as many of your video's wherever I locate them! Your a fantastic teacher. Thank you (It's Sew Easy) it's wonderful to find Janet Pray on your venue, I also watch all shows that is broadcasted on our local TV schedule. Sincerely, proudgrandma
Hello do u mind sharing the TV on which she is.
Thanks for sharing.
Janet Pray is the niece of the late Margaret Islander, and she has taken over where Ms. Islander left off. Pay attention and practice these professional sewing tips until you have mastered them on scraps. Then you can put them to good use when sewing your garments. These are just a couple tips that are of great importance, but try ALL of them for perfectly professional results. You can become a great seamstress/sewist, too!
LOVE how you give a detailed explanation!!! Would a walking foot help as well?
This lady is delightful.
I’ve had neck pain for weeks now...Now I know how and why I got it...Thank you 👍🙏
Thank you for your tips, I am now sewing easier and more comfortably, it is surprising how much diference these changes make.
Very good tips

Thank you for the tips they are very helpful, wish there was a second like button
Thank you!
Janet, you packed in more information in this short video than what I learned in a day long sewing class! I just purchased a Babylock sewing machine and a sewing table that folds up. Can I use an extension table with my current setup or is the extension table only good for sewing cabinets? Thank you in advance. I will be subscribing.
Been sewing 50+ years and FINALLY someone explains why the neck pains. Not so funny but my whole setup is wrong. Thank you for the great info.
I wish this lady could be my instructor! I haven't sewn anything yet & I'm so glad to have come across this video! Has anyone done these methods with wider fabrics?
wow THANK YOU!
Thank you
One of my favourites indeed :) Thank you so much.
Thank you for simple but amazing tips. Could you share what Brother sewing machine you were using?
This was a very instructive video for me. I have ordered an extension table for my Pfaff machine and am looking for a compact sewing table for my new sewing space. Do you have any suggestions?
That's amazing! Can this method eliminate the use of a walking foot?
Janet do you have a tip on the right way to use the leg lift for the presser foot?
Thanks
Very useful tips, thank you
Hello Janet, I'm not sure you'll be able to answer this question since I just caught the video. My husband is building me a sewing table. I have a very small 10x10 room so thus far I've requested 26"x68" so I have room for my cutting table, a bit of room for a small press board next to my machine. I cannot do clutter, or too crowded.
My question finally: I have a Babylock w/a plastic table like you show. I'm puzzled which way to go. I found when sewing & quilting in my old space the plastic table became frustrating, always pulling fabric. I had a low table, chair etc, it just didn't work for me. You mention it only briefly. How do we use if? What am I doing wrong?
I have seen someone that has her entire setup, the machine w/the plastic table lowered into the table. That looked nice, but more form than function.
I need a sewing cabinet. Everytime I sew my fabric hangs off and shifts causing me to fight to sew straight. I never knew the flat service affected the curves on my projects so much. Thank you! Do you have a link for the sewing cabinet in this video?
What is the cabinet you have your machine in?
How do u put sleeves in ? Id love to see your method
what is the modual number of your machine . plz reply thanks
What machine cabinet is the one we see?
Would you please tell us which brand of table your using in this video. Like it!
this is a Horn table
I believe you mentioned 2 methods to deal with a flat sewing surface but only mentioned the extension table...is there a second solution?
I do wish this lady would do a whole series of tutorials.
I have terrible hand cramps and pain in the shoulder as I quilt... I just purchased a quilting table and will try to make a proper table height for myself - it's really hurting me.
This was very informative. You mentioned there is a company that makes the inserts for any machine. Would you please share the name of the company? I've been searching for these for my three machines with no success. Thank you.
Sew Steady.com sells an acrylc table. They are not cheap, but very nice and useful. Enjoy.
I know these are great tips. However practice is the ONLY Key . Great instructions
Can you advise what cabinet table it is that you have this Brother Sewing Machine on? I have the same Sewing Machine and have not found a table to fit it in.
What machine is it?
What brand of sewing table please?

Adopt me please. My shoulders and neck have been bothering me sewing this week. I have been slowly teaching myself to sew (2 small kids have almost stopped it the last 5 years). I going to finally order a sewing table I've been wanting over 2 years. 😁

Up until the last two tips this video is basicly useful for 3 people '-' 2 people who will be sewing big pieces and 1 person who has the space for a whole table, or lives where getting that extra thing is possible...
Those who wont be sewing big pieces, dont have all that space, dont live somewere where you can get the extra piece avaiable os just cant afford it, you can just jump to the minute 8.22 where she talks about how to sew curves, save your time
What I learned is that these techniques are not possible without a flush sewing surface. 🙁
The hold method can be done without a flat surface. I use this technique all of the time even though I still pin because I have to move my fabric from one room to another. But it does keep the fabric from moving when I take out the pins. I use that method also because for me it gives me better control of the fabric.
7 years too late. But your arms are not at 90 degrees, your hands are higher than your elbows. Haha. Do as I say, not as I do, eh?
Thank you!
Thank you
