I found one of those boxes in my (1957, Cwmbran) house. Mine hadn't been touched since the house was built. The terminals inside were really tight and fixed with some thread-locking varnish. Mine said "The Octopus" on it's lid and also carried a label bearing the 1957 installation date. Since Cwmbran is a post-war "new-town" there must be thousands of them here. The house only had about four mains sockets from new. This made for very neat wiring between The Octopus and the quaint wooden fuse box. That neatness is now gone with three ring finals and several radials post rewire. Thanks for the vids, Jimbo.

It’s called a pancake box, it’s how a lot of lighting circuit were wired, we have somewhat modern day equivalents today whereby a Wagobox is fitted in the loft, a fed goes in and all the switch line cables and light fitting cables spider out of the box.

The old boys that taught me called it a "Spider box" and had all the connections there and only one cable at switch/light. A nightmare when you need to wire new smokes off the lights 😅

M8, that box. Have a word with them two old geezers at efixx. They probably remember installing them 'back in the day' (?)

Appreciate the comment😀. I would suggest the basics like him calling local companies asking if he can hand a CV in. He has to do this not you. Secondly could always offer himself to a company for a couple of days for free labour so he can prove himself to them that he’s a hard worker and wants to learn. Thirdly the hardest but probably the best going to each company and show his face and having a chat with the companies there and then

All these places we had to live in are disgusting. Some black (God knows what they are made of) blocks, low ceilings, rectangular rooms etc. And then people think why they get sick and so on.
