  • While I spend a lot of time talking about music on this channel we also need to learn how to navigate the tool that is ukulele. The more easily we can play the instrument without thinking about the technical aspects the more we can focus on making music! If you're going to do one exercise for finger independence on the instrument this should be the one: the 1-2-3-4 Exercise. Simple in concept but hard to execute cleanly.

I love this exercise. I have used it with guitar students, but you have made it much cleaner for me. I have not been insisting on legato from string to string (duh). Challenge accepted!
Thank you for the gentle way you educate the educators in a way that is accessible to everyone.

I am trying to get this in my brain. Like you said coming back down the scale is the more challenging part ! We may have to chat about it!

Slow and steady very much wins the race on this one! It can take quite a while to get under your fingers

This is a great exercise for any instrument and you explained it really well. It’s boring but really does make a huge difference. It also helps to change up the order of the fingers ie 1324 2431 3142 4213. I’ve also used it on bass to cure flying fingers

Simple exercise great results. So many great guitar players recommend this exercise as a finger warmup, which easily crosses over to the ukulele. I'll start my ukulele students on it today. Thanks for the music.

This beginner thanks you for this very beneficial exercise! You were clear and slow - a great instructor! I just subscribed and will check your other videos. Thanks again! 😊

I like to build on this with chords and quick chord changes, so I will fret 1234 then 4321 and move it up a fret each time (2345 and 5432, 3456 and 6543 and so on). Also sounds terrible 😅

Thé ladder! One of my absolute favorites but at least you get a major seventh occasionally 😂
