Morley Safer Interviewed About Vietnam 1983

  • Thinking about Morley Safer I dug out an interview we shot with him about Vietnam and being a war correspondent for a proposed documentary called Witness to War.
    Clete Roberts was the reporter. Ian Masters was the producer/director and I was the producer. I think I wrangled the camera gear but can't remember who shot this or who was on sound.
    Unfortunately the film was never made and there are numerous drop outs in this old tape but Safer is compelling.
    We were able to interview Safer and others because they were in LA for a conference at USC "Vietnam Reconsidered" in March of 1983. This was 10 years after the Paris Peace Accords had been signed in January 1973.

    Note the cigarette. He completely destroyed his voice. Near the end his throat was coated in thick heavy rattling mucous
