And funny enough, after a lot of frustration from not being able to pass the copy protection after the first mission(s), my brother and I discovered that opening one of the game files into a text editor gave us all the copy protection questions and answers. We felt like real hackers back then. Good times.

It's the "set temporal distance" method of time travel. Example: You travel 500 years into the past and from there 500 years into the future. A minute on either side moves the "500 years mark" that minute forward. So, you always come back to "the present" at a time shift equal to the time you spent in the other era. The portal always moves you the same time-distance whenever entered. Like covering a mile, but the mile might end up differently if you start in a different spot.

Seeing those lab fails (and even that coffee machine and keeping the records next to the open furnace) really explains why you had to sign a waiver to even work there...

I watched the show and played the '97 version. Really cool to see the 80s one! Fun note, the 97 CD ROM would play the theme song in a CD player.

I never had the opportunity to play any of the Carmen Sandiego games in color when they were still considered new-ish. We had an Apple II with a monochrome green monitor. I barely even knew games like Carmen Sandiego or Oregon Trail could be played in color till much later but still didn't feel like I missed much.

I was playing this game again about a week ago (I was in a "Carmen Sandiego Marathon", so to speak...) and I actually searched a review of it on your channel. It's nice that now there is one.
I love educational games and this is, in my opinion, one of the best (along with Oregon Trail). I actually improved my history and geography knowledge a lot by playing it again (as a kid, I just wanted to arrest the crooks and didn't care about the "learning" part, I would forget everything I read in one day, but now I was somehow more interested in learning, I've read a lot of Wikipedia articles this time lol).
And yes, the game show opening song is VERY catchy. There's a high quality version of it included in the "Great Chase Through Time" CD (I can upload it if anyone is interested) but unfortunately it is a short version (1 minute long), not the full one.
