  • A great song from Leeland celebrating some of the ways that God manifests Himself in our daily lives! This is an abbreviated version that we've used at church- all the same parts, just less repetitions. The drums here mainly focus on "tom" grooves and an open, powerful chorus pattern- have fun!

    My goal with these videos is to provide a somewhat simplified version of the percussive elements for the song, while retaining much of the feel and rhythms normally beat out on a drum kit. I don’t want to use a ton of flashy playing, or even show the full extent of what I might play if I were to sit in on cajon for a Sunday morning set with this song. I’ve been known to add hihats, tambourines, shakers, toms and a whole bunch of stuff to an “acoustic set” kit. While those can all be appropriate and a lot of fun, I don’t feel like that’s the most helpful for someone who’s sitting on a cajon for the first time or is still getting a feel for playing with a band. For these videos, I’ll stick to a cajon and an occasional shaker.
    If you have any questions about playing cajon, how I approached this song, or any song requests, let me know!
    Glory to God, always.
    P.S. - Still working on lighting and cinematography. At least this round wasn’t filmed while isolated in my basement! A special thanks to my friend Dan, who manned the camera to minimize me running back and forth and to make sure it didn't stop recording in the middle of a take!

    I
    My pastor came to me several weeks ago after seeing me drumming on the chair in front of me during worship and asked me if he got me a Cajon would I play it and it feels like an answer to a prayer I didn't know I wanted I finally get to play this Sunday. I am so joyful from a 35 years of addictions out of 43 years of life to people around me finding sobriety through Christ work in me all I can do is weep in joy for his gloryus love he would have for a sinner such as I was to any body struggling today I say if I can do it so can you go to Jesus and trust him "for the Lord says my grace is enough for you"

    I wanted a video to show me what a Cajon can do, as I think to add percussion to our band. We are going to the streets to preach the gospel and play worship outside. Excellent drumming! Thank you for the video. ALL GLORY TO OUR AWESOME GOD! THANKS TO JESUS WE ARE ALIVE !!! Give Him continual praise! Hallelujah!!!

    I hope to get a cajon sometime after Christmas! I've been watching your tutorials. It's still helpful that you describe what is going on in the song! Thanks so much! I'll be ready when my church drummer Max and youth leaders Wes start teaching me! Thanks so much!

    My box arrived today . I'm impressed with what I can do with it . Looks a bit like yours but the front face is lighter . I like how yours sounds compared to mines though, my box has more snare to it. Which one do you have ?

      That's exciting! It really is a fun instrument to get to know and to play. The cajon I'm playing here is a Meinl model that I've had for over a decade and has been discontinued for a while. The secret sauce is that it has adjustable snares, which lets you dial in a sweet spot between snare response and muting the drum - this seems to be an uncommon feature with current models. In more recent videos, I've been playing one of the cajons we have at church, which is a current model with snares that can be turned on or off, but not dialed in. I'll have a video up soon about adjusting the frontplate tension, but I don't have much advice for adjusting snares that weren't made to be adjusted, unfortunately.

    Is there any way that you have some sort of sheet music or anything? I find that super helpful for trying to learn the new grooves and stuff (I'm super new to the cajon btw :) )

      Unfortunately not- it would be substantially more work, and as it is I haven't been able to make more of these for a while (hoping to get back to it).

    Hi there again, May I know what microphone are you using to pick up the sound from the cajon?

    • @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer
      @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Janelle!
      Honestly, I think a lot of people over-think mic'ing up a cajon. This is literally just a Shure SM57 laid directly inside, sitting on the bottom of the cajon. No stand, no padding or muffling (though some cajons need just a touch, in my experience). That should get you a decent starting point. You could get similar results with most dynamic microphones- I've also used SM58s, Sennheiser E835s, and EV C04s and they've all worked decently.
      I'll be filming a video later this week talking about the mic and processing setup for these videos, since I think that will help a lot of people. Hopefully it'll be out soon!

      Thanks for the feedback! What are you listening on? I highly recommend using headphones. At least on the various sets that I used to listen and mix, the click seems to be at kind of a happy medium volume where it mostly doesn't overpower the music but it's still clearly audible as a reference. The first 2 minutes barely have drums at all, and is probably the lowest dynamic level that I'd actually use on a cajon; it's audible with a good set of headphones, but very lightly.

      It's a Meinl that I've had for over a decade that they discontinued, but it's similar to their current Snarecraft line.

    the cajon annoys me a bit i feel like it doesn’t really do it’s job and just feels like a waste of money. just bring in a kick one snare one tom & one ride and acoustic brush sticks

    • @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer
      @ChurchMusicBoxPlayer  Před rokem +2

      That's an opinion, for sure, but I don't really agree. Not every situation calls for a small setup (though I've used such a setup many times and do often prefer it over or in conjunction with a cajon). Part of the appeal of a cajon is that hand percussion is an easier entry into drums/percussion than a setup that requires greater dynamic control and 4-limb coordination. This channel is aimed not at drummers, but at those just starting to fill the percussion role.
