I really love Z's character growth. In the first part of the movie, he's paramoid, pessimistic and always pissed about the society he lives in but as he's faced with actual problems and challenges, he finally starts acting instead of always thinking. He finally leaves that bubble in his head and starts taking responsibility. And when he even pushed Cutter to save him risking his life for another ant. And in the end, instead of his original plan of leaving the colony for insectopia, a place where he can live on his own without a worry in the world, he instead stays in the society he once hated and finally was able to make peace with his fears.
Very clearly promotes individualism and thinking for yourself. "Be your own ant" and "make your own choices" are heard repeatedly. Blindly following orders proves to be fatal. Teamwork, a good attitude, and a strong work ethic are also encouraged.
Z runs away from the colony because he hates being an insignificant part of some huge thing. In the end of the film, he realizes the colony is able to survive because while individually insignificant, the ants are mighty when they all work together.
