    I wouldnt say that thrash was part of the NWOTHM, It's 'Traditional Heavy Metal'. Plus saying that thrash was revived before heavy metal I don't know if I agree with either since there were bands like The Great Weird Slough Feg and Sweden's Wolf around in the late 90's or Magnesium from Japan. Those were new at the time and kinda forerunners to the NWOTHM. Thanks for a great episode!

    Hate to be that guy and I agree with about 99% of the list but Enforcer's From Beyond should definitely be on this list as it is in my opinion the best off all the non-proto albums featured here. It's the album that got me hard into NWoTHM. This was a super fun stream, keep up the good work!

      Indeed. Personally I'd put it in Legend be fore Eternal Champion. Yes EC is popular and cool an they got kickass songs but From Beyond is a better overall record than any of EC's release. Much more multi dimensional and feels more mature in its songwriting. I dig EC don't get me wrong, I just think From Beyond is simply the best record of all the NWoTHM, period. Just my opinion tho that being said I wouldn't take EC off the legend tier either.

    I'd say the new wave of traditional heavy metal began with the new wave of doom/doom-like bands/ and proto-metal that started around... I mean it picked up steam around 2010 or so, but I'd give a lot of credit to bands like Witchcraft. Granted the new wave of thrash opened the door to the possibility of trad metal and doom to come back.

  • @bonfireatnight3998

    I struggle to fully grasp what New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal is all about. Until watching the video, I thought it's Skull Fist, Enforcer, Cauldron, Night Demon, or Haunt, while strangely I would never have counted Portrait (for instance), which I guess is kind of arbitrary. I love the latter while the first-mentioned bands don't do much for me. I have to admit, bands like Iron Griffin, Atlantean Kodex, Eternal Champion, or Smoulder - all of which I absolutely love - are a very different thing for me. I guess what I want to say is, I love epic heavy and traditional doom metal and there are newer traditional (heavy) metal bands I love, while many I can do without. I'm not sure whether I need an umbrella term for more traditional metal subgenres.
    The video introduced me to Grendel's Syster - an awesome band! Slough Feg vibes, but still very much their own thing. Thanks for the recommendation!

Simple as that. But I definitely feel what Sarah says about sameyness in the genre. If I see a band with like... night killer (im sure there is one), with neon font, a deloreon or something on the cover, I'm passing on it SO HARD. Same with a band that blatantly wants to be the next Eternal Champion, but thats less fair.

    To Banger, some constructive criticism: I'm really glad you covered this subgenre. But, this new rambling, chatty, over-long Lock Horns format doesn't work well. It's basically an hour of content and an hour of Blayne giggling and rambling. The original series from years ago, with generally more prepared speakers (like Sam with his notes) and a moderator to move things along and keep presenters on topic, was much more helpful and watchable.
    If he's still available, you really want to make as much use as possible of Martin Popoff, too. He's a far more knowledgeable, prepared, and articulate public speaker than some of your (guest) hosts. (The guy on the recent Judas Priest Lock Horns, for example, added almost literally nothing to the conversation but just sat there.)

    Seems like you guys are conflating traditional heavy metal itself with NWOTHM by putting Rainbow Rising in the "Proto" category. It's a staggeringly good album, sure, but if anything, it was proto for the original birth of metal as we know it, not the nostalgia-fueled, decades-removed NWOTHM scene. (I'm not sure "nostalgia" exactly applies since it looks like most all the guys in the movement are too young to have even been around in the 80's. But at least they discovered all that great music after the fact and are helping revive and honor those styles.)

    My list would look much different. Rainbow as a proto NWOTHM band? Rainbow & Riot have nothing directly to do with the birth of NWOTHM. You categorize Cauldron (who started in 2006) as a "proto-NWOTHM" band but you completely ignore WOLF (Sweden), who was active in the 90s and can be credited in part for launching the whole movement in Europe as we know that today. You also ignore several influential bands starting before 2010, like Battleroar, Ram, Crescent Shield, Metal Inquisitor, While Heaven Wept. There are so many excellent bands missing from the "essential" list in lieu of a lot of mediocrity like Haunt, Enforcer, Night Demon. At that point you may as well add Ambush or Cobra Spell. You make only brief mention of Atlantean Kodex. No mention of Isen Torr that I heard, or Solstice. No mention of Warrior Path and Sacral Rage are missing. I know you cannot include everyone, but you ignored a lot of talent in lieu of quite a bit of drivel. I also disagree strongly with attaching "legendary" to anything from Eternal Champion or Visigoth. Eternal Champion has a few good songs, but is to me is just a heavy metal version of Norway's Tyr. Visigoth have yet to write a song I consider good.

      This is entirely the wrong way to look at it. The past 20-25 years most metal innovations have been awful. The NWOTHM is a glorious reset button. And yeah, maybe once this gets big after 3-4 years they will start to evolve and change things the right way, the denim and leather way, not the backwards baseball cap and spiky hair jumpsuit way.

    • @MxLee192
      @MxLee192 Před rokem

      @@MetalPersonJ you are either above the age of 60 or below the age of 12 with that comment. Metal isn't about fashion. And the fashions it does have have been many. Nobody wants a return to goofy 80s iron maiden looks. Those hair cuts were awful, as were the spandex. You can't reset anything. If somethings been done. It's done. Most modern bands trying the old sound can't hold a candle to Judas Priest.
      As for the jump suits and backwards caps. That's also very old now but again, it was a great sound.
      With all the technology and pedals today. You'd think bands would be more creative. Yet they revert to pastiche of old. Making metal irrelevant whilst other genres progress with new innovations.
