While everyone would love to make some decent cash from their used valuables, it’s often more convenient to just give them away. That’s part of the reason why garage sales and yard sales are such great places to find decent items at bargain prices.
It often works in a similar way for estate sales. The biggest difference, of course, is that instead of selling their own stuff, folks will sell things that belonged to their relatives who have recently passed away. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), that means that families may not know how much their loved ones’ things may have actually been worth.
That’s what turned out to be the case when Emil Knodell visited an estate sale in Missouri City, Texas-and picked up an item that contained a secret treasure…

Do the right thing? They sold it, as is. The right thing is to do what you want with what you bought. And yes, you did buy the stuff in the chest. So it is yours. You can give it back if you feel bad, but it is not "legally theirs" means everyone knows it is "yours" once sold to you. Do the right thing? No. Do the "classy" or "friendly" or "generous" thing. The right thing would have been to profit from your good luck and keen eye.

What "wise and wonderful thing" is it to legally purchase something At Auction and then return contents that he was lucky enough to become the Legal Recipient of?? Besides, the original "owner", probably family of a deceased uncle or something DIDNT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN UNCLE JOE's STUFF OTHER THAN TO SELL IT ANYWAY. So it's "moral" to return something to someone WHO DIDNT OWN IT ANYMORE under the guise of Doing The Right Thing?? You're not thinking very clearly.

Although I guess it's possible they never moved the thing from where it was sitting in the house to begin with, however, the sellers should have been present when it was moved out of the house after the sale. The sellers would still have a claim on the contents if the dresser had not yet left the home.

I once bought an old 1930s photo of a man. When I took out the back panel to clean the glass on the front, a bunch of Prisoner of War letters came spilling out. The guy in the picture was an American Wake Island POW in a Japanese camp that died from cruel and inhumane treatment in a Shangai prisoner camp. Still trying to track down his next of kin, but I think they are all dead. I did a video about it hoping to have someone help me find his family members. Maybe one day I will be able to reunite these old letters with someone that is related to him...

The family obviously didn't give a Danm about that dresser so they sold it.
THE ONLY REASON they would care about it is if they could get more cash out of selling it.

I bought a box of books at an estate sale for $180. I purchased it because I saw that there was a first edition copy of the Fountainhead on top of the box. I hadn't dug into the box, I had spotted it just minutes before it was put up for auction. Anyways, I later found a first edition copy of The Grapes Of Wrath near the bottom of the box, and another $300 worth of first or limited edition books. I later sold the GOW for $2000. I never considered for one second finding the family of the prior owner. Did they refund any money to the people who got auction fever and overpaid for figurines?

Emil is a damned fool. He bought the dresser "as is" including all the dust, scratches, stains, and whatever might be inside.

What a decent genuine guy. Not like most greedy arseholes. Worked and saved his money to buy this watch. He very much deserves that money.

That stamp has to be from 1970. Women suffrage was in 1920. The stamp indicates the 50th anniversary, you figure it out

my two greatest garage sale finds are a bundle of greenlee electricians tools I bought for $120 turned out to be worth over $4000...and vintage Polk Audio massive tower speakers for $10 that to buy an equal quality speaker today would cost over $1500. I fucking love garage sales!

just an FYI estate sales generally take place at the persons house so furniture isn't moved. that's probably why it wasn't noticed till it was being loaded in the truck. just to those people that keep asking why no one else noticed.

At least one thing about it sounds right. A dealer would look at the stuff, tell you they're worth $15,000, Offer you $7000 saying they might never sell it at full price and then sell it all for $150,000.

I checked the story. Alas, It is TRUE! However, since the dresser started out in Michigan and wound up in an Estate sale in Texas, everything is "sold as is"- that means he could have kept it without fear of reprecussions. The fact that the people doing the sale plus owners did not know or care about the rattling noise. Fact is if it was dolly carted to be set up for the sale, if the dolly squeeked you might not hear it rattling. The other fact that people these days work with headphones might also contribute to the factor. Next factor is I have a "sideboard" from the early 1800's. My sideboard has a tight drawer with a type of "grated" slots on the top where when you slide tge drawer, the content underneath does not shift. These grooves are very minute and nothing hangs on them. My father was an auctiineer and he told me what they werr called but I can not remember at this moment. This dresser might have had one of these type "anti-shift" features.

Hey leggs, you must not know how special military medals are! All that "crap" was hidden for a reason...obviously important to someone.
