    I was there. Jerry's solo was comparable to his 1977 Morning Dew at Cornell (I was there too, about forty feet back from the stage). Many heads consider this to be the finest Standing ever performed and I agree.

    I was at this show, and this is the song everyone was talking about afterward. It was certainly the best "Standing On The Moon" I ever witnessed.

    This being in Eugene, I can’t help but think his emotion filled closure is him speaking to Mountain Girl.

      @DewTrain  Před 6 lety +4

      Definitely possible. :) Apparently the band had some external (then, internal) influences guiding them that weekend that they hadn't had in a while... ;)

      I never really "got it" until the next show though. Spent all Saturday looking for this outta-my-league girl I was supposed to meetup with behind the soundboard. Pre-cellphone era I couldn't find her. Randomly saw her on Sunday between the sets, hung out with her for 2nd set. Sun coming out and the opener of the "The Wheel" was magical.

    These 2 shows were easily the best post 7-90 GD IMO... Both the performances and the scene (sans the incident you describe below and probably a few others)... Other shows had great moments/songs but no full shows compared to these...... That Bird Song took me back in time!

    2 of the best shows I ever been to . beautiful weather and top notch playing. so many highlights like this, JS, Help>slip>franklins, broken arrow, 2nd night drumspace was unreal too. Indigo Girls opened but still in the lot at that point melting paper.

    • @DewTrain
      @DewTrain  Před 5 lety +1

      I actually liked the Indigo Girls' performances. The Dead were off the hook tho, and, melting paper??

      I didn't, unfortunately. I'm from Seattle, so I headed back north for home after the weekend was over. The pic for the video is one I actually took that weekend though. We had also seen JGB in Seattle a few weeks earlier. :)

    We flew out from Chicago for these shows... and a little R&R. We had to switch planes at SFO and hop on a jumper flight up to Eugene. Well, much to my surprise as we walk onto the plane, there sits Huey. I say "hey Huey, what's happening?" He gave me a look of 'please don't murder me' to something maybe more like, 'shut the fuck up.' So I did, but was wondering why he thought so much of himself, as I started thinking, maybe he has discovered a new drug? Anywho, as we get our luggage and proceed to the car rental, who's the only one standing there, It's Huey again. At this point I just minded my own bee's wax. We figured out why he was so 'keeping to himself' when he came out and started blowing harp on "Schoolgirl." I couldn't help but chuckle.

    Ranking the versions of SOTM is so subjective. If you go by the outro solo then sure it’s an all timer but there are versions where he sings it beautifully without flubbing lines. Regardless, I come back to this one for the outro “Be with you …
    Love this tune
