  • Winchester was once a thriving city and the capital of King Alfred in the 9th century. A leper hospital existed outside the city boundaries, housing outcasts afflicted with leprosy. Time Team, a group of archaeologists, has three days to locate the remains of the 12th-century leper hospital. Geophysics survey the site and find building remains and traces of a wall, indicating the presence of the hospital. Excavations uncover the chapel, cemetery, arms houses, and the potential graves of notable individuals, including John Ebden, the former Master of the leper hospital.

In the USA the Federal government maintained a hospital at United States Public Health Service Hospital at Carlville, Louisiana. The National Hansen’s Disease Hospital and Museum are located in Carville. The hospital and it’s patients created a community separate from the “outer world.” There is a great history of the disease and treatment are easily Googled and worth a good read.

Also, the island of Molokai in Hawaii was a leper colony well into the 20th century.

Right you are! When I was a teenager I checked a book out of our local library (reading was the main source of my entertainment and vicarious travel) entitled "Miracle at Carville", by Betty Martin. Highly recommend this book!

The national guard runs a GED program at the base in Carville where the leper colony is. I got my GED there in 2015 and they still housed people with Hansens disease when I was there

“We found the wind pump from the WWI army camp, we think it’s on top of the Medieval well
I think it would be a very critical part of the Leper hospital” crazy.
As an American it’s hard for me to even comprehend how many layers of history are literally piled up on top of each other in England.

I love these programs and would have loved to be a part of the people digging up the history! As an aside, leprosy, aka Hansen's Disease, is now a treatable disease, if caught in the early stages, but rare today.

I have seen many of these episodes and wonder why they don't check the 3 day weather forecast before they begin. So many have been rained out on the second or third day. I would like to have seen the third day of digging. Otherwise, a great educational experience.

part of it is that it's inevitable since the UK has a lot of rain, part of it is that the actual days are decided a while in advance, to get permits, research and just schedules in order. so they don't get to know the weather much in advance and have to make do.

does geophysical use GPS to mark where they are? If so does the Earth's wobbling from major earthquakes or volcanoes affect the GPS readings?
