Thank god opensource DB engines were developed and now money goes on *software development* , not on *islands* for some CTO... Nowadays PostgresDB (opensource & free) is a more popular choice than Oracle DB. Though still some big businesses are afraid of using something that is free of charge, and are more willing to pay millions to Oracle or Microsoft. But in this video we can see where this money goes: islands, luxury cars, charity, buying other companies by overpricing. And only a few dollars is spent on really developing & supporting the software...
The problem with open-source software is that by the time there is a satisfactory open-source replacement for some paid software (for example, PostgreSQL for the Oracle Database), the company making the paid software has usually moved on (because they used the money they made from the first sales to fund new R&D) and many users have also moved on (aka they now have new needs they didn't know they had before). For example, Oracle Database is a multi-mode database (melding JSON, XML, Key-Value and Graph models with the good old SQL model), while PostgreSQL is just SQLy. Oracle is also selling physical computer systems and a cloud platform tailor-made to their Oracle Database, while PostgreSQL is just a database. And then there are the legacy Oracle deployments out there. It happens with home software too. By the time VLC and MPC-HC could navigate the menus of a DVD without crashing all the time, we got Blu-Ray and then Netflix. By the time GIMP got the ability to edit CMYK... oh never mind it still doesn't and GIMP is useless if you want to print your pictures, and it also misses lots of selection tools and filters that Adobe is constantly adding to Photoshop. But truth be said, if your needs are just SQL (aka you want a relational database and that's it) and there are no legacy constraints, you'd be mad to pay Oracle instead of using PostgreSQL. Just like you would be mad to buy WinDVD if you just want to play your old DVDs. But I want to play my old DVDs and BluRays, so I paid for WinDVD.
