  • I've spoken before about how many interests and hobbies I have, and one of them that I'm only beginning to expand upon here on CZcams is my interest in museums. Big or small, general or niche, I have yet to go to a museum that ever disappointed me. You would probably be surprised to find that it is hard for me to choose favorites when it comes to museums. But every once in a while there is one that will stand out that activates integral memories and feelings from my youth.
I had only heard of the House of Tank museum from word of mouth. I honestly expected it to be located in a larger town perhaps Saint Louis or Jefferson City. I discovered it was located in Wichita KS which is about a three hour drive for me. When I reached out to find the hours, there were specific days that would be available for attendance. The museum is free but they did accept donations. It took me about a month and a half to finally get out on the road to see this collection.
This museum is actually a private collection that is available for free to the public for educational and entertainment value. The gentleman that owns this museum was kind enough for a few years to house and share a spectacular collection of armored vehicles, many of which you can still see on their Facebook page. When I was able to find a weekend that I could go and see what they had, I had already found out that the collection would be starting to be sold off to other collectors.
Although I have no doubt that the initial size of this collection would have been absolutely breathtaking, the remaining vehicles and engines on display, Still filled me with the exact same joy that I experienced as a kid. The beginning of the video shows a small handful of my childhood toys that I still maintain here in my studio. My father was in the Air Force for almost 30 years, and so military themed toys were a usual staple of my childhood years. So of course, over many decades of my life I make a bee line to any sort of armored vehicle no matter where they may be. The history, design, and utility of armored vehicles is both a fascinating and cautionary tale about human ingenuity and roles in warfare. I am beyond elated that a collector would be so open as to offer the public a glimpse at historical relics such as these. In truth I found myself in awe and feeling very much like the seven-year old I remember being when I received some of the die cast toys featured in this video.
I don't know the future of House of Tank, but I do know that it brought smiles and knowledge to a lot of people judging from the photos and comments left on the Facebook page. Thank you sincerely to the people behind House of tank for having this museum open.
