  • In "HOW TO SKI BIKE" I'm joined on the mountain by Lee McCormack and our ski bike instructor Stacey from Lenz Sport. I've been ski bike curious for years. So when Lenz Sport offered up a couple bikes I jumped at the opportunity to finally attempt learn how to ski bike.
    We got in 5 runs and my buddy Steve documented the problems, progress and stoke.

    I actually did this recently with your instructor Stacey. She was amazing. I was surprised on how quickly I picked it up. I even went in the trees a few times which I would never do on a snowboard. My wife was not a fan...but she has zero MTB experience. This is a great winter sport for bikers.

    I just had to comment on this video! First of all, Awesome!!! I came on a family ski trip and have skied a few times and not good and don’t care for it but do it so family does motorsports with me. Decided to rent a skibyk and told the guys I am 60 yr old mountain biker, motocrosser, sand duner guy and adrenaline junkie and this looks fun. They said its nothing like that and rented me a bike and that was my only instruction!!!! I got on it and can’t get enough! Like you said, in 10 minutes I was visualizing tricks that could be done, but didn’t have the skill to do yet 😅
    So I had to figure out some technique with no help (I was the only bike on the hill) within an hour I felt comfortable I was having a blast to say the least! We are here for two more days and I am pacing waiting for the lifts to open so I can try some of you guys tips. I can’t believe there aren’t 100 bikes on the hill also!!

    I tried out a snow scooter about 15 years ago. Similar(ish) to what you were riding but BMX handlebars and no saddle, you stand pretty much directly on the rear ski/skid. I found it hard to make it carve but I probably didn't have my weight forward enough. What did work was pointing the front wheel directly down the fall-line and skidding the back-end out to control speed/direction.
    I probably should have had some lessons but I was young(er) and all I wanted to do was send it of a jump ;-)

    I worked on a ski hill back in the early 00's and we had a load of those type 1 snobikes, we used to just thrash them about on our lunch breaks for a laugh. Although they were fun they felt so unsafe at speed compared to skis or a snowboard because your feet would just randomly swerve in or out if you caught a rut at speed, ACL snapper.
    These Type 2s look class, but in snowboots I would want massive pedals to stand on. Did you feel like you could plant all of your weight properly?
    Another fun video, I am on day 3 of manual practice working on your advice, started on the BMX, working my way up to the 29er, definitely scared of going of backwards on the 29er.

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  Před 3 lety +1

      Thats a god question. they suggested snowboard boots but I just had some sorels. never felt like i needed bigger pegs. I guess more width might be a thing to play with. I'm used to moto footing so a bit wider might be interesting but i can see how it could be problematic too. It was shocking with the feet as close together as they were how HUGE a difference if you got your weight into the wrong peg for the circumstances. I bet in deeper snow it is a hoot!! I wore shin and knee pads too.

    • @adamcrolla3593
      @adamcrolla3593 Před 3 lety +1

      @@JoyOfBike Pads was definitely a sensible decision, i wouldn't want to take the edge of one of those mini snowboards to the shin. Wider pegs, or pedals, might give you that extra force to apply to the edges on steeper ground, like when you are on skis and you widen your feet turning on steep and icy. It is going to be interesting to see if these catch on and we end up with a snowbike group of people shredding, and all the casual skiers and snowboarders start to complain about the reckless snowbikers acting dangerously on the slopes. "You're going too fast", had that shouted at me so many times, whilst on a snowboard, but on skis nothing.

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  Před 3 lety

    • @staceycarl4419
      @staceycarl4419 Před 3 lety

      Yes it is possible to get "hooked up" in the bike while crashing, just as it's possible with mountain biking or skiing. Sometimes if you are on steeper runs and you high side it, the bike can land on top of you (just as it would with mountain biking).

Skibiking will help add skill how to control a bike wildly since you shred it side way with both ski a lot. All the jumps and bums are the same way.
