  • Michael Drejka, 49, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing Markeis McGlockton during an argument over a handicapped parking spot.
A judge handed down the sentence Thursday morning, almost two months after Drejka was found guilty of manslaughter in the shooting death of McGlockton.
The judge says Drejka will be credited 92 days for time served. The judge also ordered a $5,000 restitution lien to be paid to Britany Jacobs, McGlockton's girlfriend and mother of his four children.
"No words...for the hole this has left in my world," Jacobs said.
Jacobs was at the convenience store on the day of the shooting. She was in the car with their son parked in the handicapped parking spot.
Drejka's defense team spoke first Thursday, asking the court to consider things like how the shooting was isolated and not pre-meditated. Drejka did not make a statement.
McGlockton's mother, Monica Moore-Robinson, spoke next saying, "I don't hate you, but I will never forgive you."
When McGlockton's father spoke, he said: "If God takes my life before I can forgive you, then I will see you in Hell...mark my words."
In July of 2018, Drejka shot and killed McGlockton, 28, during an argument over a handicapped parking spot at a Clearwater convenience store. Drejka had confronted McGlockton's girlfriend, who had parked in the spot with their 5-year-old son.
Security footage shows McGlockton leaving the store and shoving Drejka to the ground. Seconds later, Drejka pulls out a gun and shoots McGlockton as he backed away.

The Sheriff did his job pretty well and efficiently. I must tip my hat to him though I was irate at first.. The Sheriff is a well known opponent of "Stand your ground" as it's written in Florida. He's had many problematic cases and knows the danger of this law to the public peace. He saw the tapes and reviewed the statements, he's the boss don't forget. Had he charged Drejka the night of the incident he would have had 48hours to throw together a case that could have fallen apart if they made a mistake. Being a wise old lawyer, with the added experience of being Sheriff, he quoted some crap to the media on why he "couldn't arrest" Drejka, properly quoting the law. In a crafty manner, he gave confidence to the idiot Drejka that he was innocent, thus reducing the chances that he'd flee while on a bond furnished by a go fund me from every gun fanatic in the nation (and Canada too). With the ability to charge later, the Sheriff and State's atty could take their time and build a solid case, which they did. They had time to find witnesses and victims of other cases and line them up right. It took them a year, but they did it. They also gave witnesses like the store owner and the boss of one of the victims the time for the moral wrongness of this all to sink in. This is critically STRATEGIC! It solidifies the case and made it UNDENIABLE, like a Michael Jordan slam dunk on a break away.
I was hostile at the Sheriff until I saw him weave his web and work his majic! He's a maestro! At least he was with this case. You have to think about the ways in which they can lose an obvious but complicated case like this. His name was on this. One mistake could have caused the biggest riot in Florida history. The Sheriff knew this and wasn't having it!
P.S. He was also smart to keep key points of the detective interview away from the media until the trial began. Again smart, very smart!

I would have lost my balance but I would not have gone down. And, why did he have to keep up the yelling? He could have politely explained what they were doing wrong, and he would not have been pushed. No, Drejke was a pansy bully, plain and simple.

As much as I agree, I highly recommend you watch all the punishment phase testimonies of both families in the Guyger case as well as the post-sentencing to get a better understanding of both the victim and defendant.
Its a pretty unique case and the jury + 4 alternates (who consisted of 7 black, 5 non-black, 4 white, mostly women) chose the 10 year sentence, not the judge. Also the prosecutor was top-notch and executed perfectly. There is something deeper going on in that case and it shows in the post-sentencing phase with the brother of the slain victims testimony and very human response towards the defendant.
I am also aware that if it was flipped and Botham Jean killed Amber in the same situation, it would be no questions asked life in prison.

The family members of Botham Jean was very moving. Amber guygers mom I did feel bad for, however at the end of the day i don't believe Botham's life was worth only 10 years. Even if Brandt Jean thought differently, I think it was a travesty that anyone thinks 10 years is enough for a innocent man's life. Just my opinion. 🙂

He KNEW Markeis was moving away, but he was SO angry and appalled that a man would actually shove him like that, that he couldn't NOT pull that trigger.
At no point was Michael's life in any danger, and he KNOWS it.
If you're being honest, you have NO reason whatsoever to stretch the truth about the particulars of the situation. He would NEVER have thought he'd need to lie, even in the face of overwhelming photographic evidence, that Markeis was coming towards him at that moment.
If he would have told the complete truth, he would have had to plead guilty to the charges against him. "Self Defense" would have been out of the question from the start.
So, he KNEW he acted out of anger. And that what Markeis did, even if it was in defense of HIS family, being confronted by an angry man outside while he was in the store, was something he could have NEVER allowed him to walk away from with his life.
Michael has a gun and a permit to carry it, that means he can use it with impunity, he believed. ALL rights and NO responsibilities.
With the power of life and death at his hip, he was on a personal crusade to rid the World of people cheating the established parking space assignment order and you better BELIEVE he would enforce those rules whatever the cost.
Now, two families have been forced to endure without the so-called "head of the household" around.
Sadly, one of them is gone forever for doing what ANY rational, reasonable human being would do.
Markeis died protecting his family, and Michael will be incarcerated for decades for protecting a friggin' handicap spot.
Let's hope the days are long and the nights are sleepless and seemingly drag on for an ETERNITY.

Basically this dude is a remorseless coward that was given money by his mother and didn't work. He is literally a worthless bum that picked fights with people with a gun to feel powerful. Once a real man pushed him for harassing his family - he shoots him like the coward he has always been. Parents shouldn't have babied his lazy and pathetic a$$ all his life and he wouldn't be in this situation. Cowards die over and over again. Simple as that. You live with no honor ...you deserve no dignity.

Although he was wrong he was essentially held to a higher standard than a Guyger. I wouldn’t not have been upset with a 20 yr sentence for Guyger because she would serve at least ten. Even if Guyger was at her home the law doesn’t say you can kill someone simply for them being in your home when you arrive.

I honestly believe that he thought he would get off on probabtion, and be teaching others what to do in situations similar to his own. Whether that was his own idea or whether his defence team told him they might be able to swing-it can only be speculated, but I bet the idea sounded like 7th heaven to him. The moral of the story is : do not interfere with others when it comes to parking issues. More fist fights and deaths have been caused do to someone's misuse of disabled parking space. No one can tell if a person has a disability, sometimes these things are hidden. There was a case in the UK where a man was assaulted by some interfering twit, and it turned out that his wife was in the store and she was disabled. So don't assume because you see someone who walks just fine, that he is abusing a disabled parking space. Outcome of that story was … man died in hospital and interfering twit went to prison!! All over a disabled parking space. If you think someone is abusing a disabled parking space - report them, it is not a matter for you to interfere with.
