- We didn't know the original garage elevator lift video would get so much attention. With that attention, we got a lot of great comments. Most of which were positive, constructive, and interesting. Safety came up many times. First to be said, I am not concerned about this thing crashing at all. But I have some time, and I like to mess around with stuff so I started thinking. First, I added a couple of fall arresters to ease the concerns of the commenters. Ok, easy but expensive. But I kept thinking. Based on a comment, I watched some stuff online about the original Otis elevator and how his brake revolutionized the thing. I kept thinking and sketched something out. Now I think it may work!
I try to make these things without equipment that most people do not have like welders, plasma cutters, cdc machines, and other exotic stuff because I have none of that stuff and I don't know how to weld. (Yes, I could farm it out but this is how we dooes it, Larry.)
Fingers crossed, we'll pull this off! - Jak na to + styl
I'm pretty impressed so far with your thoughts and in addition the comments being made. There's some pretty darned smart folks out in the CZcams world. My question is, why go to the extra trouble if the brake arrestors work? I thought that was a GREAT idea when I first watched your two videos. For three years I had been looking for a better idea than what a lot of these home made barn elevators have been so far. Your video by far is the best I've seen so far. I'll look forward to what you have in mind. I have a two story house with a basement and I have it ready to cut in the floors to make it work. I'm 78, live alone and facing the possibility that some day it may be a necessity. I have a 120 year old house in the city that I have gutted and added just about every convenience one would hope to have in their home. I have a young uncle who knows what would be necessary to add safety limit switches for the doors etc. If and when I do this I will be happy to share anything that could help your fans out. Don't (for liability) forget to mention they are for freight only. You know some idiot is bound to put six people on one some day and break all of their necks. lol Great Job and fun to follow your progress. -keith
Yes, I dig what you are saying. The fall arresters are great. I’m really doing this emergency brake thing because I thought of it and now I want to do it! I have no fear of the rope breaking. Your thing sounds awesome but please very careful. You sound like a good guy. We wouldn’t want to lose you.
I like your design. Maybe to get people off your back about falling, you should throw in a fold down bar - like on an amusement ride.
Lol. Great idea. It is part amusement ride, after all!
From Houston Texas. It's mid January and we're super excited to see the modifications soon.
We’re almost there!
The brake is done. It works and video is up!
LOoks like good thoughts and engineering. Can wait to see what you come up with!!

What I'd add is a 1" high strip along both sides, just to keep anything from slipping out and getting pinched when going up. I'd also put a board hinged across the front so it can serve the dual purpose of a safety barrier when going up and down, and a short ramp to aid loading and unloading with a handcart. Given the position of the attic ladder it'd have to be pretty short and you'd want to do something different with the piece of carpet, or move the attic ladder closer to the garage door.
Good ideas.
I would just use the existing holes in the unistrut and setup like a car lift locking mechanism or what you see in jack stands that lock into position as it rises
That’s what Mitch wants to do. I’m trying to keep it super simple. Btw, it’s academic. I have zero concerns of a failure.
The brake is done. It works and video is up!
In Prior Lake anxiously awaiting the final solution.
Lol. Me too!

If you got some actual elevator constructors they could probably give you some great feedback. Local 9 of the IUEC is right there in your area!
Ok thank you
