- The A-Side of the debut single of Aztec Camera, released on the scottish Postcard record label in 1981. Enjoy!
Lyrics:
Over fields and hills,
Waits a train for us,
But we're here because,
And I'm counting,
Up to 9 again,
Up to 9 again,
That's how long it lasts.
Is this still a gift?
Something we can use,
Oh, I'm sorry I'm late,
But I started to wait,
And discovered I'd lost my shoes,
The gold in my excuse,
Is only there for you.
I show you jewels you've seen a thousand times,
and then I tell you that those jewels were never mine,
So when you're asking me to,
Define that feeling for you,
What can I say?
It's there until it goes away and,
If they had voices then they'd whisper threats,
When they come, they come in silhouettes.
Take my arms and tell me:
"Don't forget",
I had a story, oh I hope I hadn't told it yet, I
If I could take you there again, someday,
You'd only say we've been there, anyway.
You'd find your diamonds,
But they fade away to ask,
You're flying backwards,
Now you lose more everytime you crash and...
Now I'm aware of where it's safe to meet
I find my shoes and then I find my feet,
So when you're asking me to,
Define that feeling for you,
That's what I'll say,
It's only there until that gold just slips away. - Hudba
It's a shame the Postcard era singles and demos have never been released on CD or digital format. Roddy's talent really shone through at a very early age and this song captures it perfectly.
Played this single literally to death .... lyrics still ingrained in my brain 40 years later .... absolute gem, a brilliant slice of pure pop !!!
As a 16 year old guitar player, this blows my mind. I took the time over the past 3 days figuring out the chords to this one and it took me a while, but definitely worth it.
Makes me wonder who someone so young could write this classic song, musically and lyrically beyond his years, sound of young Scotland indeed
Been in love with this tune for over 30 years and still a gives me goose bumps x
Me too...38 years now...week!
Me too, achingly brilliant track !!
Roddy Frame is such a tasty guitar player in my opinion, not just fancy solos, his chords and strumming are beautiful I think.
Got this, complete with postcard as well. A prized possession.
Superb, superb song. (one day, 25 years ago, I played this record 20 times in a row).
Freudastaire ...... again !
This song and the first Aztec Camera album were absolutely marvellous.
もう何百回とききました。彼らの1stアルバムが出るよりももっと前の初期の曲のようですね。何故、アルバムに入れなかったのでしょうか?こんなにも素晴らしいのに!
I remember having a tape of this, Green Jacket Grey, Release and We could send letters. Campbell Owen went to my School!
Brilliant!! And Roddy Frame was only 16 years old when this was recorded I believe.
You are so right....happy happy days when music made you feel you could change the world. I think I played it 21 times :)
magic. suddenly i'm sitting in my dorm with the 7-inch on my cheap-ass Technics turntable and my Dad's ancient Garrard speakers. more than 30 years ago. this is hardly hi-fi, but i've never heard it that way anyhow.
Absolutely brilliant, such talent!
My skin still tingles when I hear this
Talk about an underrated guitarist! 16 years old when he wrote this track! holy cow! back off Johnny Marr! Back off Edwyn Collins!
Boy genius
@@ergo322 jimi is great too, but we’re taking bout Postcard Records and Rough Trade Records guitarists in 80s. Have a nice day! Peace & Love from Japan.

ロディー最高!
今更ながらほれなおしました。
heard about this gem from a John Peel.. wish they would have made a whole album with this sound!
They did!! High Land, Hard Rain!
wow! a real blast from Roddy's past. some trademark licks and a tricky arrangement that's kind of all over the place but somehow retains a charm of it's own. nice posting!!
When people talk about great singles (an old concept now, I know) but it has to be both tracks. This has to be in everyone's top ten, because We Could Send Letters was the flip.Up there with Candy Skin/Meat Whiplash and Poor Old Soul parts 1 and 2.
Hi there. The two other A/B side singles....never heard of 'em,,,,by whom, plz
Fire Engines
Poor Old Soul was Orange Juice.
REally like this!!
As double A sides go, definitely right up there with Ambition/ Different Story. A truly wonderful debut 45:-)
Roddy... 💙
it's very nice of you to post such rare track
thanks so so so so much
80s gems.... Classic
I have this on 7'' (I guess every indie kid from this generation does) but it would be nice to have it on CD. Incredibly it has never been put out in that format. Maybe wishing thinking but I hope one day that changes.
Don't be daft - your 7" single is very rare (if in original sleeve) and worth c. £200
@@maryfrancesoconnor4770 It's not actually worth that much. Have a look at Discogs. It's worth maybe 50 quid or so. Not that I'd wish to sell it. Thing is, when one has a rare precious single like this one doesn't wish to harm it by playing it at all regularly. It's best not to play it at all which paradoxically rather defeats the original purpose for why it was released, as something to listen to. Hence my wish that eventually Roddy comes to his senses and puts the damn thing out on CD.
I'll show you jewels you've seen a thousand times ...
+Alice Goode your cool dude
They hear voices then they whisper threats ..
esta es de sus inicios de Aztec Camera
mmm me gusto esta chevere la cancion
I’ve been looking for this one since 1984
I just purchased a copy on discogs. There are about 10 currently for sale.
Marvellous. Marvellous.
So frickin' good
did you know, there was a choice of name they where going to call themselves, either Aztec triangle, or Pink camera ( just as well they split the difference)
Great band!
No probably about it..............the best!
i love postcard era and Aztec Camera postcard songs. Why there's not a CD with them??? Shame on the past mr. Frame?
Prefab Sprout seems to have given Scotland a pop sound in this time???
Och aye danu!
smiths ripped them off
The Clientele show them due respect.
Roddy was the one songwriter that scared the shit out of Elvis Costello......damn straight.
Did Elvis actually say that?
@@tonybates7870 He did.
It sounds like Split Enz or is just me?
gmansi It's just you.
I know what you mean. Not just you.
@@deadaccount5 Good!
Just you
What Split Enz song in particular?
