Having a mana sink can win you games in not just limited, but, in standard too, just look at kessig wolf run.
I was expecting The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale. Seeing as it's the star of the land based legacy deck, it seemed like a good choice. Agreed with the academy ranking though.
Why does Academy tap for blue? Because Seat of the Synod makes it hilarious (throw in Minamo for absurd mana - 4 Seats, Academy & Minamo tap for 15 blue).
Let's see, Bazaar, library, maze of ith, dark depths, eye of ugin are all I can think of off the top of my head. Glacial chasm is good but isn't really in the same league as those IMO. Fetchlands could technically go on the list but I don't really think that's the point. Same with Urborg, Tolarian Academy, and more.

I have a tapped mana vault, 2 seat of the synods, a mox opal and a random mox in play, draw Academy and play Ral Zarek to kill his Jace, followed by my own Jace. It is also quite amusing that Ral Zsrek untaps Academy :D Play stuff, untap Academy and cast Force of WIll off of 1 land... yeah, that's fair. This card is too broken, especially if combined with broken cards.

I played two Phyrexian Tower in my mono-green Urza block enchantress deck to stop people from playing Treachery. (Or replenished Confiscate.)

Phyrexian Tower was useful in suicide black during Saga standard. Sacking Negators with damage on the stack was a reasonable play.
