Metallica blown away by Dennis Lyxzén's and Mikkey Dee's version of Whiplash

- Metallica and The Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM) received the Polar Music Prize 2018 at a ceremony at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm in June 2018. Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo from Metallica attended the event, as well as Dr Ahmad Sarmast, the founder of ANIM.
Several artists honoured the Laureates during the evening; Aryana Sayeed, Loreen, Ghost, Candlemass, Vargas & Lagola, Moneybrother with Seek & Destroy, Dennis Lyxzén, Mikkey Dee, Lone dear and Tuva Syvertsen. Host of the evening was Swedish mezzo-soprano and journalist Boel Adler.
The Polar Music Prize band, conducted by Svante Henryson were:

Mikkey Dee! One of my fav drummers of all time. I met him backstage after a Motörhead gig a few years ago in Copenhagen. I told him I played drums and that he was my fav drummer. He took my hands, closed his eyes and said: 'Yes... You have drummer's hands!' Awesome guy and an absolute legend. RIP Lemmy \m/

Ironically, I recently read where Malmsteen said Metallica are great, except Kirk can't play guitar for shit. I guess he'd be a fairly reliable judge on guitar playing ability. Kirk does kinda just play a few simple arpeggios over and over again quickly. Sounds cool but would be boring to a real guitar player like Malmsteen I suppose. I enjoy it myself but apparently Yngwie has more refined guitar taste.
Mikkey Dee is easily in the top 10 best drummers in the world.
Mikkey Dee is amazing! His drumming in King Diamond is some of the best to come by, ever. Such creativity and unique playingstyle is rare to find in any band.

I have to agree completely! I was really disappointed when Mikkey left King Diamond. What an amazing lineup throughout fatal portrait, Abigail, them and conspiracy. Saw them in concert on numerous occasions and was blown away every time. The musicianship was top notch! Not much of that around these days!
Jaytothe M I can only imagine how epic it must've been to see them back then. It seemed like King always made sure to choose the best musicians possible, and that really gave the band some personality. Mikkey never reached that level of drumming after hr left...

and was really disappointed because I
knew, that Mikkey Dee had left the band,
and only played on the record.
Snowy Shaw was really good though.
Mickey Dee is an animal on drums, and one of the nicest people I have ever met. I was having a chat with him after a show, and these girls were trying to get him to leave, but he stuck around for about half an hour as we talked music. Pure class, no ego whatsoever, and doing what he loves to do. He would do it for free......

I like how Metallica is always “blown away” by what people do with their music like it’s so difficult to play or outstanding lol Mikkey played with fucking King Diamond and Motörhead for fuck sakes... It’s just like when Rob auditioned to play bass and they were like “wow couldn’t believe how quickly he picked up our songs and how fast his fingers were!” When he had played with Suicidal Tendencies before where he played some seriously fast songs.. like come on guys

Mickey Dee is one of the all time greats.
Great version! The only thing I don't understand (which doesn't mean that I don't like it) is why they do the intro (the snare hits) in 4/4 instead on 3/4. But I guess it's on purpose, as Mikkey does the same thing on the Motörhead cover.

Rather Motörhead style than Metallica. Mötorhead also covered it on a tribute album long time ago.
I mean this Country fiddle style Cello playing is like mixing Country with Metal and Rock . This song sounds much better with an actual Rock singer slowing the tempo down a little singing the lyrics a lot more clear , and engaging as well . 🤔🙄😍⚡🌠⭐🌟💫💥🔥🙉🙈😏😎🌈🌋🤗🤑
