Something our Srilankan journalist should learn from (Hiru, Derana). Nobody had the gut to question RW or the Rajapaksa's to the point the way this journalist did. Once someone asks the right question you can see him shiver, shake and attack the journalists.

Ranil Wickremesinghe's first stint as Prime Minister, from 1993 to 1994, coincided with a strong economic performance, achieving a 6.5% growth rate. However, by 2000-2001, the nation faced a deep recession with a negative 1.5% growth, echoing the current economic crisis. Wickremesinghe returned as Prime Minister for a second, longer term, lasting from 2001 to 2004. During this period, the economy showed signs of recovery, with the growth rate reaching 5.8% and foreign debt decreasing as a share of national income.
However, the security situation remained challenging. The Public Front government under Chandrika Kumaratunga experienced heavy losses, including strategically important military camps and 5,000 security personnel. Subsequently, Wickremesinghe secured another term and negotiated a ceasefire with the LTTE. This decision, while strategically advantageous as it weakened the LTTE through internal divisions (including the defection of a key commander), ultimately proved controversial.
Nevertheless, our main focus lies elsewhere. In Ranil's tenure, Mahinda forged a friendship with Mangala, appointing him as the primary commander in his leadership campaign. Mangala believed he could influence Mahinda once he assumed leadership of the party, thus paving the way for Mangala to realize his dream of leading the SLFP after Mahinda.
Subsequently, Mangala will undertake the responsibility of convincing Chandrika to dissolve the parliament and conduct a general election. Following this, a coalition between Chandrika-led parties and the JVP emerges victorious in the election. Mangala then persuades Chandrika to appoint Mahinda as the Prime Minister of the newly established government.
Sri Lanka's 2005 presidential election approached as President Chandrika Kumaratunga's second term ended. Initial polls favoured Ranil Wickremesinghe, prompting Mahinda Rajapaksa to explore options through his brother Basil. Some sources allege a deal was struck with the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) to manipulate the election outcome.
The claimed agreement reportedly involved three key points:
      1. Boycott by Tamil Voters: The LTTE would encourage Tamil voters in their strongholds (North, North East, and South) to abstain from voting, as they were anticipated to largely favour Ranil.
      2. Engineered Negotiations: The LTTE would engage with Ranil, seeking a written commitment to implement the 13th Amendment upon his potential election victory.
      3. Financial and Material Support: The LTTE would receive significant financial aid and reportedly avoid customs checks on specific imports.
During his election campaign, Ranil Wickremesinghe reportedly received a communication from the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) expressing their interest in dialogue. A subsequent meeting facilitated between representatives from each side allegedly saw the LTTE offer conditional support. In exchange for backing Ranil's candidacy, the LTTE requested a written assurance guaranteeing the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution if he secured the win.
Ranil, citing ethical concerns, is said to have declined the offer. He reportedly refused to make such a promise solely to secure electoral victory.
The alleged intention behind securing the letter from the LTTE was to sway the Sinhala vote in Mahinda's favour, as Ranil reportedly enjoyed significant support within this demographic at the time. However, given the uncertainty of obtaining the letter, other strategies, potentially involving Mangala and the JVP, were reportedly planned to achieve the desired electoral outcome.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) actively participated in Mahinda Rajapaksa's 2005 presidential campaign, attending numerous rallies across the country. Rajapaksa faced accusations of misusing tsunami relief funds at the time. While some argue the JVP attempted to mitigate these accusations. The election boycott enforced by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) led to extremely low voter turnout in Tamil-majority areas, including an estimated 500,000 voters abstaining. Ultimately, Rajapaksa narrowly won the election by 150,000 votes.
In 2015, Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed Prime Minister under President Maithripala Sirisena. This appointment followed Sirisena's surprise victory in the presidential election, where Ranil had served as campaign manager. The coalition government lasted for around three months before the UNP, led by Ranil, won the general election. This led to Ranil's fourth official term as Prime Minister, lasting from August 2015 to November 2019.
However, the political landscape remained complex. In 2018, President Sirisena attempted to appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister in a move deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Ranil was briefly reinstated before ultimately losing his position in late 2019. Various factors, including the actions of President Sirisena and JVP, contributed to the eventual return of the Rajapaksa family to power, with Gotabaya Rajapaksa elected President in 2019 and his party, the SLPP, winning the general election in 2020.
While some accused Ranil Wickremesinghe of close ties to the Rajapaksa family, his political career was almost destroyed by Chandrika, Rajapakshas, Rajapaksha's allies and JVP. During his two premiership stints in 2001-2004 and 2015-2019, Sri Lanka experienced periods of economic recovery. He also served as Prime Minister again (one month) and started to serve as President in 2022 to address a severe economic crisis.
Since assuming office as President following parliamentary procedures outlined in the Sri Lankan constitution, Ranil Wickremesinghe's administration has overseen economic improvements, including a reduction in inflation to single digits. His government has implemented policies aimed at strengthening the economy and reducing reliance on welfare programs. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish transparent systems and strengthen national policies for long-term stability.

I read a lot of negative comments but.... I see RW as the guy who literally saved Sri Lanka. We were in an immensely dark place- no fuel, no gas, very long power cuts, no meds, food shortages, industries were shutting down, and this man literally waved a magic wand and got us out of that situation. I remember carrying my wheezing son and begging for a ride to the bus stand from the passing few vehicles. Buses were few during that time. Three wheelers were not to be seen. We went to the hospital by bus, walked more than a km to it, and because it was a main depot, we were able to get one. Otherwise buses were so crowded with people hanging fron the doors, and people clinging to the back of it as well. The paediatricians morning session was closed by the time we arrived, but luckily he had an evening session. This very wealthy doctor himself was travelling by bicycle!. This is difficulty in just one area.
Riots were ruling the country, and RW was able to put a stop to it till issues were sorted out. I dont think anyone else could have got things done the way he did.
Moving forward, I don't know whether he will be good for the country or not, but i give complete credit to him for saving it.

It's downright pitiful that Sri Lankans have this kind of extremely rude person as their supposed leader. By admitting that he's "been long enough in this game" clearly demonstrates that everything is just a GAME for him, regardless of the millions of lives that are impacted by his "game". And why would he agree to be interviewed when he obviously didn't want to answer DW's questions?
Hats off to the journalist for keeping his composure despite the abominable attitude of his guest.

If he is so experienced as he's saying he must know how to handle a interview in a respectful manner. This is what they do inside the parliament too. Shouting together, having super lunch or whatever wasting common people's money and going back to there residence. This is how they deal with the Sri Lankan citizens.

We have been grappling with the issue of alleged corruption within the Rajapaksha family, especially the previous president, Gotabhaya Rajapaksha. After he was removed from office by the Sri Lankan people, we witnessed the return of the Rajapaksha Party to power. Unfortunately, instead of a transparent and unbiased election process, the same group of ministers elected Ranil Wickramasinghe as the president, seemingly for their own protection and interests.
It is essential to note that Ranil Wickramasinghe did not secure his presidency through a direct vote from the people. Rather, he appears to be acting as a representative and protector of the Rajapaksha family and their ministers. This situation raises concerns about his legitimacy to represent our nation.
Furthermore, Mr. Wickramasinghe has not held any elections during his tenure, citing various reasons for postponement. This lack of electoral accountability further raises doubts about his representation of the Sri Lankan people.
In light of these circumstances, it is crucial to question whether Ranil Wickramasinghe genuinely represents the interests and will of the people of Sri Lanka.

Thank you very much DW. Really appreciate your interview. This is absolutely not the way an experienced politician should behave. He has shamed Sri Lanka with his arrogance. He wants to avoid the truth. Shame on RW!
