  • The first Xbox launched in 2001 and would sell impressively well for a brand new console- albeit overshadowed by the success of the PS2. However, Xbox gained a massive dedicated loyal fanbase thanks to Halo, Xbox Live, and so much more, setting Xbox up perfectly for the future.

What's your favorite original Xbox title? I mean, probably Halo, but 1 or 2? And is there a different game you loved?

The Original Xbox had so many underrated features that didn't get enough attention back in the day. The fact that it has a built-in hard drive almost completely removed the need for memory cards unless you wanted to transfer saves. Also, the fact that you could rip music to the hard drive and then play it in some games was awesome. Finally, a lot of multiplatform games ran better and/or looked better on the Xbox. It's my console of choice when playing games from that generation.

It was easy for developers to port PC games to the Xbox because all they had to do was recompile the code. Rather than PS2 where they had to almost completely re write it.

For the past twenty years of my life, I've always been a PlayStation guy. But just recently three weeks ago, I've finally got my hands on the original Xbox; and man, I've been missing out on a lot of awesome games. The two main games that made me want to get an Xbox was "Unreal Championship" and "Unreal Championship 2: the Liandri conflict" (and I guess the Halo games). Because since last year, I'm a big fan of the original "Unreal tournament" on the Sega Dreamcast and "Unreal tournament III" on the PS3; and also of any competitive multiplayer arena first person shooter games in general. Some other games that I've been playing on the Xbox lately like "Tony Hawk's pro skater 2x", "Serious Sam II", "Forza Motorsport", "Painkiller: hell wars", "Doom 3", "Sega GT 2002 /online", "Dead or alive 2: ultimate", and "Dead or alive 3". Even with as much enjoyment as I still get out of my PS2 - predominately for playing it online still - my sights have also panned over towards the original Xbox. I share your interest with Unreal on console and it's a shame that, instead of online multiplayer, the PS2 UT release only went so far as to support system-link over the firewire connection (the "s400" jack next to the USB ports on older phat models) only for the NTSC release for up to four players (on as many PS2s) in a local setup. With that port getting deleted not far into the PS2 era and there being no ethernet LAN play (both connections supported by the likes of TimeSplitters 2 and TS: Future Perfect, IIRC, as well as the latter PS2 Armored Core titles) UT MP was otherwise relegated to split screen only. Outside the console's need to sacrifice UT framerate relative to the PC's, they almost had the PS2 experience nailed down - having support for USB mouse in tandem with a DualShock thumbstick and the options to either substitute the Dualshock for USB keyboard for a PC-controls experience or, additionally, adding the keyboard as a third device when you want direct weapons select, have the ability to drop a weapon and, if you cared so, four body language taunts that, yet, didn't come with any verbals. ...Quake also should have been done better on the generation especially in light of the fact that Quake II back on the PS1 supported a mouse controller in tandem with a standard controller not to forget support of those controllers for up to four players on split-screen after a couple multi-taps were first plugged in to accommodate all 8 inputs... When it came it online play, I assume support for mouse was dropped so players would be on equal footing when it came to turn speed and aiming accuracy... Maybe that explains why Tribes 2 - a great, fast-paced 3PS and FPS - being ported over as Tribes: Aerial Assault on the PS2 didn't carry over USB mouse support so as to keep online players on equal-footing? Still enjoy the fast-paced, strategic action of jet-packing around Tribes: Aerial Assault online on occasion since I don't have the PC nor its releases to play those. The PS2 not receiving the same controls options nor online connectivity is a shame all-round IMO. Don't see why there couldn't have been the option to delineate/prevent players from joining whose controller settings didn't match.🤷‍♂️
...Your OG Xbox titles have piqued my curiosity. Thanks. 👍
Just recalled reading you were interested in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater so figured I'd pass on that 3, 4 well as THUg 1 & 2 along with Tony Hawk's American Wasteland are all playable online for the PS2... via modding, Serious Sam: Next Encounter also connects again online for the PS2.

IGN’s opinion means zero to me. The Duke controller is awesome and it was designed after the Sega Dreamcast controller, which makes it even more awesome. There is a reason, to this day, sega games feel better on xbox instead of playstation and Nintendo. The controller just feels like a continuation/evolution of the Sega Dreamcast. I have and still love my original Xbox. So many fantastic games to play on that system. My only problem is that I've somehow had pretty terrible luck keeping mine in working order. I currently have 3 of them though I've owned at least five to date. The first has a FRAG condition due to a failed hard drive and is completely dead so it became a parts console, another has blown voltage capacitors so it doesn't power on and off properly, the third had a disc drive that committed harakiri, the fourth is a working spare that a friend gave me and my current one is in perfectly working order... that is, after frankensteining all the good parts from consoles one and three together just to get one working console as well as replacing the drive belt for the disc drive. My voltage capacitor princess is currently waiting for repair and will act as spare #2. Xbox's are typically very sturdy and reliable so I must be a magnet for bad ones lol.

Gotta call you out at 27:25. Those HDMI cables are pass through meaning if the game is outputting in 480i or 480p t will still output in 480 to your tv or monitor. The Xbox and some games do support 720 and 1080i so a game like ATV unleashed will natively output in 1080i. If you want those higher resolutions for all games you need an upscaler that will line double the image

I'm not sure if this qualifies as DLC but on the PS2 you could technically unlock extra content in some games. I own 2 games that did this, Crash Tag Team Racing and WWE SVR 2006. If you owned the game on PSP and PS2 and connected them through USB, you could unlock extra content for both versions. I believe more games did this but I only ever owned 2 with this feature. Though I'm glad this didn't become a trend because not only you needed 2 consoles to do this, you had to buy the same game twice.
Xbox had the right approach for this.

Have the most magical memories of Halo CE. Ironically, I wasn't actually interested in it because console FPS' had never been that great so I wasn't buying into the hype. All I cared about was DOA3. The only reason I ended up buying it was that back then retailers would do this bundling thing, forcing to to buy three games with the console during the launch scarcity. So I ended up getting Halo and Abe's Odyssey.
Halo sat in the shelf for a couple of weeks as I was just playing DOA3. Then when I finally got to it I was blown away. Brought my wife in "you have to play this with me". And we did. That first Halo CE run is a magical, treasured memory of our early marriage for the both of us.

It was 2002, I was 32 & I had no intention of buying another games console. I owned several older consoles & computers but I honestly hadn't even thought about gaming for years. Then, I was watching TV, when an ad came on for a new game - Splinter Cell - on the Xbox, I was stunned at how good it looked. So, on my next day off from work, I bought an XBox bundled with Splinter Cell, & everything was fantastic.
A couple of years later, I was talking to a work colleague about Splinter Cell, & we disagreed about how good the game was. He was coming at it from his PS2 perspective, having never seen it on the XBox - so I drove over to his house on our day off and placed my copy into his newly purchased XBox - he was blown away by it. Then he showed me his PS2 version, & I realised why we had both initially disagreed on how good the game was, because on the PS2 it looked awful.
Great console. I'm now going to pull out that pesky capacitor.

As you all know, the original Xbox required you to have a DVD video playback kit to play films, the dongle you plugged into 1 of the controller ports contains the DVD decoder chip. But I've just discovered that the decoder software is also included on some game discs if not all. I discovered this when powering a black Xbox on that's been powered off for sometime. While loading the game, Midnight Club 3, DUB Edition, it triggered the dialogue "......You need to plug in the DVD playback kit ....". I reset the console, then it loaded into the game & the dialogue never returned even when I reset a few times. Please anyone else let me know of similar experiences

It's important to note you don't need one of those HDMI adapters to get HD support. If you have a set of component cables the Xbox will natively support 480p 720p and 1080i. And of course 480i if you're using a CRT with component input. The hardware also wasn't that obscure as it was essentially an Intel Pentium 3 with less cash so it's been argued it's closer to a Celeron along with 64 MB of RAM and what is essentially G-Force 3 graphics

Actually is a Geforce 4 ti prototype equal to 4200, and the Cpu is a Mobile Pentium III not a desktop celeron, and was planned to reach 1ghz but Intel refused. The original Cpu was an AMD Athlon runing way faster but very hot, so they changed to 1ghz P3 mobile but Intel tricked MS on Last moments and made it 733 for stability reasons... Líes it run OK at 1ghz.
