This song hits home for me. I stayed up all night on the phone with a dear friend who is like a little brother to me. He was going to slit his wrists with a box cutter, and I talked him out of it. He's now a happily married man. This song always makes me tear up because I know that not everyone can get through to someone like I did. And I don't think it was me, but God using me as a catalyst.

Bless you, you were so wise, some of us weren't nearly as much, and fell into all the mistakes that the song warns against thank God for your brother every day. The possibility of a future my love one could have had is like an enormous anchor I simply ignore day to day. Life is so precious. Appreciate your loved ones to the fullest and then beyond because you never really know what you got until it's gone

"In an interview with USA Today, lead singer Isaac Slade explained that he wrote this song about an experience he had working at a camp for troubled youths: "One of the kids I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him. I got a lot of email about it. One kid died in a car accident, and I guess it had been the last song he downloaded from his computer. They played it at his funeral, and some of his friends got 'Save A Life' tattooed on their arms. The response has been overwhelming."Slade claims that the song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to the boy but were unsuccessful. As Slade says in an interview, the boy's friends and family approached him by saying, "Quit taking drugs and cutting yourself or I won't talk to you again," but all he needed was some support. The boy was losing friends and going through depression. He lost his best friend and could not deal with it. The verses of the song describe an attempt by an adult to confront a troubled teen. In the chorus, the singer laments that he himself was unable to save a friend because he did not know how."

One of my favs from the fray, they're such a great band and your reaction was great to watch. I think I remember reading that the song was inspired by the band lead's experience with some kids at a camp he worked at. Idk if one of them died or something it was some time ago.

I have always liked this song but now it breaks my heart. My youngest brother took his life in January 2018 and I never knew he was depressed or suicidal. We were both adults, married, with children. I was going through a messy separation and divorce but I would have done anything had I known he was suicidal.

  • @1989NickyD

The kids in the video seem to be going through the five stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

This song literally describes the last conversation and time I saw a friend not that long ago. It's been an up and down struggle for this person for the many many years I've known this person and knowing their history...I know that conversation is the last time I'll ever see them again...I won't go much into it, but you don't have to commit suicide to kill yourself...Sometimes someone can make life choices where they slowly just fade away and weather they live or die...They are no longer with us anymore...Everyone my friend knew has tried to be there for this friend, but the path they choose for their life and the choices they make...Sometimes people can die by not outright killing themselves, but just letting themselves waste away until until they are literally gone...Mentally, than physically! Sadly my friend wasn't mentally even capable of understanding what I was trying to say or that we even were having a conversation when we last talked...
You know if you have a friend with long-time struggles and you know their pattern of destruction cause you have gone back and forth with them for many years trying to help...There always ends up being that one last conversation where you know for certain it's the last conversation ever...I mean, sometimes you don't know when someone is going to physically or mentally (or both in my friends case) be gone for good and it's random and shocking...but when it's a long-standing situation, there is that one last conversation where you are hoping it's not that one last conversation, but you truly know it is...
I'm not trying to bring down the room, I just reheard this song after a long time and was like, "That's EXACTLY the conversation my friend and I had and now that's that!"...
How to save a life? Some lives, no matter how much you try and how many different approaches you take with a person...It's sad, but you can't regret trying your best when you can't save a life that never wanted or knew how to be saved in the first place...
Thing is...Most times, while a person has to want to be saved...Allot of times it's more about that they want to be saved, but have gone down sooo far that they don't even know how saving is possible...
It's sad, but we have to realize that we (those who try to save friends, family, lovers, whoever) did all we could...WE NEVER CAUSED THEM TO WASTE AWAY, DIE OR BOTH...IT'S NOT A BLAME GAME AND IF WE DID OUR BEST TO CARE, THEN WE DID ENOUGH!...WE CANNOT SAVE SOMEONE FROM THEMSELVES IF THEY DON'T SEE THEIR WORTH FIRST!

    Beautiful song
And your right it's important to go through these lyrics, and its good that songs like these have made you more aware that others may be going through tough times, this song was so big when it came out I remember seeing the video on TV and hearing the sing on the radio but never really knew the lyrics until I got older and now having lived more of life its hits closer to home. I hope you have a great day and God bless anyone who reads this comment, I hope your tomorrow is a lot better than your today

I watched my best friend since birth put a gun in his mouth March 10th 2002... a few minutes before midnight. I was 22 and he was almost 22. We were drunk from the night out that night. A night that went bad for various reasons. So we went back to his parents house. He and his parents got into a big argument. They then told him he had to go. Kicking him out because of his drinking problem. He then did what he did right in front of us. It wasn't until after he did what he did, did I notice the signs of his tendencies. I have never been the same since.... and it's been just over 19 years
