nothing in today's music world will ever even come close to Roy Orbison's music. So many beautiful songs with his amazing beautiful voice....8-25-22 thank you Roy
I heard the song for the first time just a few months ago and was immediately blown away by this classic and powerful tune! I had to find out who wrote and performed it. Very impressive.
When I met my husband I had just broken up with my boyfriend, who I loved very much. He was in the navy and not there when I started dating my husband. When my boyfriend returned home, knowing how much I had loved him, my husband was afraid I would go back to him. He never told me this but many years later my husband said the song Running Scared was the way he was feeling back then. I lost him 11/09/22. We were married 61 years.
Great voice & lyrics lost him way too soon he also played in Traveling Wilburys with Tom Petty & George Harrison. So amazing diversified but loved all his songs. And they are also gone Rest & Sing In Peace ✌🏻
True. Three no 1 Hits he had in the UK: Only the Lonely for 2 weeks, It´s Over for 2 weeks and Pretty Woman for 3 weeks. Running Scared was #9 in the UK, #1 in the US though. Maybe Orbison talked about radio playing lists? "Too much training hurts your style.. probably.." hahaha!
The other party involved was Monument Records' Fred Foster, who told him to not falsetto and blast it out full voice. Fred was usually right; from 1960-64 they made some of the greatest records ever, and then he went to MGM Records and flopped, lost his first wife and got second chances in both music and life. One hell of a story that ended too soon.
Fell in love with his album The Orbison Way when I was like seven! It was my dads record! I played that thing to death! The emotions the music invoked hit me right in the chest.... I didn’t play music for a living until I got out of the Navy but that album planted a seed.... Thanks Roy! You are missed! One of a kind
My dad had Roy's two-record Greatest Hits LP. The cream white one. I played those records for hours. I recorded them to tape in the early 90s and played it for hours in the car. His voice and storytelling was pure gold.
Where is this interview from? I love that Roy was like "Oh, since you can't hear me, I'm just going to blow out the equipment!" The magnitude of his voice was incredible!
The Beatles loved him, especially Lennon, they didn't suffer fools gladly. You could have dumped Roy in any era he would have gone straight to the top.
I don't understand the statement from the executive saying they couldn't hear the ending. Was the original ending sung very soft? Or was Roy off mic? Or was the mic placement not correct?
It was soft at the ending and Fred Foster Flip Him off in Front of 30 people and said to Roy Orbison: If You Can't Hit That Kast note a Little Harder, we're Going to Lose The Record
As was normal in those days, the song was recorded live in the studio with all the musicians together - 30 in this case, as Roy says. He was singing the end notes in falsetto and couldn't be heard above everybody else. Hence Fred Foster flipping the switch. So Roy tried one more time, hitting those sensational notes in full voice. It was the legendary moment when he discovering the full extent of his vocal capability.
The good thing about using it in a mainstream way like a movie trailer, appropriate or not, is that it brings the music to a lot of new ears. If people like it, they will seek it out, especially since it's all chopped up for the trailer. People will want to hear the full version and again, if they like it, they will find out about its original meaning and context. I will also add that the inappropriateness of it is the whole point. For a Saw movie you would expect heavy metal or something. Using an old folksy country song about love while people are being diced up by blades is supposed to make the audience feel uncomfortable and weird which adds to the creep factor. Kind of like using the jack-in-the-box "pop goes the weasel" in the Child's Play 2 trailer or "rock a bye baby" in Nightmare on Elm Street 5, the juxtaposition of something innocent with something evil is the point.
No ego...love that. What a blessed change from the "stars" of today.
"Let's try it one more time, please".
I bet he said it just like that too, with the "please" and all. He is such a gentleman.
nothing in today's music world will ever even come close to Roy Orbison's music. So many beautiful songs with his amazing beautiful voice....8-25-22 thank you Roy

He was the Greatest singer ever. Running Scared didn"t make number one in England though.

xD
Wow, Roy and the Everly Brothers sound similar.
The Beatles loved him, especially Lennon, they didn't suffer fools gladly. You could have dumped Roy in any era he would have gone straight to the top.

I'll bet he never expected it to be used so inappropriately as it is being used in a film like "Jigsaw."
PocketWolf24 No. It's a song about love, figuratively running scared not literally.
The good thing about using it in a mainstream way like a movie trailer, appropriate or not, is that it brings the music to a lot of new ears.
