  • The white blazes on the Appalachian Trail look identical whether you hike northbound or southbound. So how do you find your way on a thru-hike of the A.T.?     I want to learn how to use a map and compass but it seems so intimidating. Its probably my biggest reason for not hiking certain trails.

      I felt the same way Kathy. Unless you're going places that are unmarked trail wise or straight out bushwacking to where you want to go, you'll be fine. It's like anything else you can learn. Find someone who knows what they're doing and be willing to listen.

      Getting out there and doing a hike for the sole purpose of learning to use a map an compass is how I would go myself. I'd download the local map on my phone but keep my phone off and just have it as a backup. I know you can do it.
