#Reaction #StarTrek #SNW - Zábava
This 1st episode gave me the same good feels that I got watching the 1st episode of The Next Generation. I’ve been waiting for that feeling to strike again for over 35 years!
Sam Kirk is Jim's older brother. He dies in TOS, also played by Shatner with a bad mustache on.
The big brother was also named after their father. So the mistake is understandable. When I first saw it, I thought about the Dad first, and thought his age didn’t fit the timeline. He would have had to be much older, or even dead by that that point. Then realized it was the brother.
@@MehWhatever99 actually James and Samual Kirk’s father was George Kirk.
@@archforge you’re right. I’m sorry, I’m an idiot. I don’t know why I remembered him as being a junior 🤦🏻♀️
@@archforge so, I just did some googling to see where I might have remembered this from. And it turns out their father’s full name was George Samuel Kirk, and the eldest was named after his father. The father went by George, and the son by Samuel to differentiate between the 2.
what was the purpose of his character? Just a name drop? Anyway it was watchable Still needs work with the dialogue.
I didn't notice until months later but I realized this whole episode is essentially the Day the Earth Stood Still with Pike as Klaatu and the Enterprise as Gort. They had the movie in the beginning as a lampshade.
At the end of this episode I felt uplifted and the second episode left me with a sense of wonder.
These first two episodes are on par with some of the best stories from the original series and TNG.
Samuel is Jame's brother. He is the one who in TOS died on a colony world when those flying rubber pancakes came and stuck to people's backs and stuck them in their nerves.
I had a similar reaction to Pike's speech as I did to the end of Don't Look Up. So humbling to see such a potential future unfold. It makes me cherish every day that we have left. This episode definitely gave me TNG vibes in the best way. Oh, and I really like that you pause the video when you talk about stuff instead of talking over the episode. (My first time seeing one of your videos, but definitely not the last.) I also really love seeing how future tech is depicted and what kind of influences they are drawn from.
2:18 That is a Saladin class ship. Saladins are destroyer class, in this case a light destroyer (single nacelle variant). The distinguishing feature of TOS era destroyer hulls are that the nacelles are positioned below and above the center line of the ship's hull. In the case of single nacelle variants, the nacelle will be positioned on the ventral side of the hull. Frigate class ships always have twin nacelles attached to the dorsal side of the hull, while Light Cruisers have twin nacelles attached to the ventral side of the hull. All size classifications will only have the single hull (the saucer section), no secondary hull.
Having watched the entire series, this is, hands down, the best NuTrek series in my opinion. The sense of wonder, discovery, adventure, family, and optimism is absolutely on point.
I know its early but I want to thank them for bring Star Trek back for the first time since Enterprise ended this is what Star Trek is
First contact and how it changes a species.... Me a stellaris player evil laughter intensifies
Be sure to like the video if you would like me to continue this show over here on CZcams!! Early Uncut reactions can also be found over on my patreon page if that interests you, episode 2 has already been posted! www.patreon.com/Harry_Allen
It's been 8 months, are you planning to upload the rest of them to youtube? It's literally why i subscribed lol
Sam is James Kirk’s brother. He dies in one of the TOS episodes. Kirk’s dad is George Kirk. 😉
Ooo thank you for this!! I really need peeps to give me all the TOS knowledge heh, appreciate it
He dies along with his wife and two of his kids. Dammit.
SNW is off to a string start, glad you enjoyed as well.
I know this is really late, but, for anyone who doesn't know, what Pike was watching at the beginning of the episode was the movie "The Day The Earth Stood Still". It's about an alien from a galactic federation who visits earth to warn humanity that we won't be allowed into space as long as we have nuclear bombs, and humanity has the choice either to stay on earth and destroy itself or abandon war and join the federation as part of the galactic community.
Heyy this isn't a bad show, tbf. :-)
I've only just subscribed to your channel recently (from your Heartstopper Reacts), and I really admire the intelligent commentary you make.
I love SNW so far, the callbacks in this episode are pretty good, especially the USS Archer, though this is the first time a "second American civil war" has been mentioned.
My thoughts on Pike's foreknowledge about his "destiny", it seems to mirror disorders like ALS or MS, or people who have a genetic disposition towards certain illnesses (heart desease, alzheimers, cancer, etc) where they can "see their future" in others who suffer from it, especially family members.
The USS Archer is apparently a "Hermes Class Scout", it seems to be the 2250s version of, say, DS9's Runabouts, or how Oberth class ships were used in TNG.
Tanks for the reaction, it was a great video, and you brought up some points it took me 3 rewatches to realise!
The only real problem I had with this first episode was the extensive magic performed by the transporter. They're setting up the potential for severe abuse, or at least fan objections of "Hey! How come you can't just beam a hooziewhatsit directly into the thingamajig? You did that in the first episode! It would solve everything!"
I loved this first season - the casting and the characters are great, the stories and special effects/sets are excellent. It brings back memories of TNG and TOS and is everything Discovery and Picard should have been. Roll on Season 2!
Also "Silent Runnng" reference!
I love the fact that the character reaction shot were genuine because they actually played the voice track to react to :D
When I first watched this episode (first Star Trek ever) I had the feeling of stepping into a show mid season, because all the characters knew each other and had history together. I knew about the existence Discovery and thought it was because they just picked up where they left. Well now I know they didn't.
As you said: From this first episode you get a better feeling for all of the crew than from disco. I just could get my hand on 5 episodes of Disco (season 2 e4-9 or something), but even tho I knew a lot of spoilers before hand and some character analysis it was just enough to not mix them up and that's it. (I'm partially facialblind so until I know a persons face well I cannot recognize them so I have to rely on voices, movement and personality)
And not gonna lie, I thought they'd make Pike some brooding hero archetype because of impending doom and all of that, but I was so wrong and I love it! I wish there would in general be more characters like him, but until now I only came across one (that was only allowed to exist for one season then they changed his characterization :/)
Samuel Kirk is James' older brother, not his father. But I'd forgotten too, so no shade intended. ;-]
Sam Kirk was James T. Kirk's brother.
excellent reaction, thank you
I don't think the prime directive has ever been broken so much like in this episode owo It's also nice to follow somone knowledgeable about Star Trek watch this ^^
Came here for Heartstopper but staying for Strange New Worlds. I hope you continue to react to it on CZcams. The rest of Season 1 has been amazing!
22:01
The Valley Forge from the movie Silent Running is now Star Trek canon?
speculation on the new race first contact is moot, since you don't just appear there and start to talk with first contact. research, observation, and many other things are done before first contact, so they wouldn't be surprised by military power, factions, enemies, or any other such thing before or during first contact, they would have done their research.
Sci-fi is like our modern day Aesop's Fables. We have our issues and we explore how to solve them in a "safe" environment that is somewhat non-polarizing, or non-insulting to humans. Of course, they showed a pic of the Jan 06 riots as the start of a civil war, the iconic gallows, and people who support that side were incensed. I thought the shocking picture was a good way to show just how far those people wanted to go, not sure if it was grandstanding or a real threat.
George Samuel Kirk is James' brother, not dad
The "Rule" is no fraternisation with your subordinates, for a whole host of reasons. Including but not exclusively, favouritism, personal problems with someone you're meant to work a long time with if you break up, and less willing to put them in dangerous situations, even when the skills are required the most.
Brava👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I am so hooked. I look forward to your next reaction for episode 2 . I have renewed interest in Star Trek
You should react to the reboot of “Battlestar Galactica” It’s the best written, best acting sci-fi series made, period. Really consider reacting to it.
Totally disagree. Babylon 5, Stargate and most of star trek are better. Then there's Farscape and Firefly.
So more episodes?
Excuse me sir where the hell is episode 4 of heartopper😩
I agree it is the best of the new Star trek
I find that in Discovery, it's not that I don't know enough about the individual crew members, it's that for too long, they failed to give me a reason to give a damn! I like some of the new people (whom I can't name right now, so there's that), but I still don't really care if Burnham lives or dies. Really, I don't give a crap other than that Spock would have to hide one more damn emotion!
Where's my heartstopper reaction video 🥺
My microphones audio file got corrupted (long story) so I am trying to figure out how best to handle the next 2 videos, has been very annoying but I figured out the issue so it wont happen again
Hey man how you doing? First time visitor, going to sub up. Great reaction and I feel exactly f****** like you do regarding this episode compared to episodes of other Star Treks. I just finished the first episode of this and thought I'd check out some reactions. I loved it I thought it was a great start. I really liked _Enterprise_ lol and I don't care what anybody says 😆. I've never yet watched _DS9_ but been considering it, and I never cared to watch _Picard_ or _Discovery_ past their first episodes. Shared my twenties with _Next Gen_ then _Voyager,_ so of course those have a special place in my heart.
Anyway great reaction and review I'll be checking what other stuff you've done. Be well brother 🙂👍
Did you not do the 3rd season of Picard or the rest of this series?
I love the episode, but the explaination on how they build a warp bomb...i don´t know. Sounds to me like a caveman watching a fighter jet and figures out how fire works.
Saladin Class!!!
Did you/he not continue with the series?
Pike's isn't offering them membership into the Federation, he's offering them a goal of what they could eventually grow into if they choose peace.
While generally I prefer arc story telling (doesn't have to be season long arcs, can be two parter three parters, 6 parters, ect). But with limited episode counts (something that British audience's have been used to for a fairly long time), only having one arc per season can be less enjoyable especially if that particular arc just is't working with you. While with a fully episodic approach , you do lose depth of storytelling, but the positive is that if you don't like that story the next one might appeal to you, or the one after that or even the one after that, and you're not waiting years for that to happen.
Personally I really ideally want a mix, but I also very seriously dislike short television series. Now I am not for going back to 26 episodes a season (or series), but I really do prefer 13-15.
I think I like Pike better than Picard and Kirk, because he's like a mesh of the two, the best parts of them, without their weaknesses
Honestly, now that we have both S1 and S2, I agree, something about him just draws me in. Anson Mount does an INCREDIBLE job
@@HarryAllen9 glad you see it too. Now that the strike is over, I can hardly wait for Season 3. I can honestly see this show going on for years to come. It may honestly be the best Trek since the early 2000s. They do a good job with the characters so much so that I can see them carrying on to do a TOS reboot within the show, maybe showing us the episodes in between what we already have.
@@HarryAllen9
Have you reacted to more than this single episode?
hey, do you take show recommendations? if you do you should totally watch merlin! you might have already seen it but yeah its just amazing :)
Found you through Heartstopper and happy to see you like Star Trek as well. You’re very fair in your commentary. I love all Trek from original through Discovery. Each offers something different. By now hope you’ve seen just how good SNW has gotten. You’d be an interesting person to just sit and discuss shows with.
Great reaction but I'm disappointed you haven't followed up with the next 9 episodes :(
Going forward, it retains the "episodic" nature that you praised but, unlike previous episodic Trek, there's no "reset button" at the end of each episode. Each character learns and grows from their experiences as the series progresses, and these experiences colour how they react.
99% of the criticism I've seen of this show is all based on continuity errors or "this thing is supposed to work this way" etc. This makes it seem as if appealing to older fans' sense of nostalgia is more important than continuing to use Star Trek as an effective story-telling medium. I'm pretty sure Gene Roddenberry would roll over in his grave at the suggestion that Star Trek should remain stuck in the past.
Is it just me or do hyposprays through the clothes bother anyone else? lol
When is the next 🌈🍂 HEARTSTOPPER 🍂🌈❤️❤️💜💜
To this day, I don’t know why people don’t like discovery.
There are A LOT of Star Trek Purists out there that hate anything that isn't even remotely reminiscent of the Original Series. It's just a classic example of how people love to live in a world of negativity.
@@CarlosHuiskens I actually think the original Star Trek is pure garbage. I’ve tried to watch it several times. I don’t know how it got so popular off of that show. It’s embarrassing
The set designs just seem to get bigger and bigger. there's so much walking around to get anything done. The tightness of the original series, and the 'Enterprise' series seemed to be more like being on a ship, instead of a Vegas hotel. I love the series (an original Trecker) so don't get me wrong. just bugged a bit by all the wasted space.
I disagree that Star Trek should be purely confined to this specific concept of dealing with different issues each episode etc. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed the new show definitely being a long time Star Trek fan myself. But the idea that Star Trek can only be like this severly decreases the longevity of the franchise.
Strange New Worlds can pull this formula off because it's just a short 10 episode season otherwise it wouldn't work. The term ''To Bodly go where no man has gone before'' doesn't just relate to the things happenings within the Star Trek universe. It also relates to how stories are being told from different perspecitves.
You're touching the table with your knees perhaps, causing the camera to wobble.
But yes, I didn't manage to finish the first season of Discovery nor Picard. This finally feels like Star Trek again. :)
blah blah blah
The people that are still bitching about Discovery at the end of it's run are the same people that swear DS9 is the best Star Trek, so I don't take their opinion seriously. Strange New Worlds though is outstanding. Great reaction!
You only did one reaction video for this show? Yikes
Picard was fucking horrible, and Discovery should never be mentioned in polite company. Strange New Worlds is pretty good, not great (yet). though that first episode was far better and more "Trek" than than anything since it first began to lose its way with Enterprise.
This show is great all the cuts in your reaction not so much it's hard to keep up with the flow of the story when your cutting every 30 seconds this is the first reaction i have found on youtube I live in Canada and Paramont plus blocks are their shows outside the US get better and you will get my sub.
Have to do cuts or else it will get hit with a cipyright strike and you won't be able to see it at all
@@HarryAllen9 Yes you have to make cuts for copyright but not every 10 seconds and not to the point that a person watching it has a hard time following the story less cuts with a more rounded edit is a much better watch for reference please look up the Galafrey Galls get warped it's two women reacting to Star Trek TNG 1 is a vet of tng the onthe a noob watching for the first time. I thank you for your reply.
I do get what you're saying but that isn't what I am going for with my channel. The idea of my channel is that you already have seen and have a good understanding of the episode going into it, therefor don't need me to be watching every scene in its entirety. I don't want people thinking this is a subsitute for the original episode, its just my thoughts while I watch it! Hope that makes sense
SNW, like all new Trek, is available on Crave in Canada, and also airs on CTV Sci-Fi on Thursday nights.
@@trisofalltrades Oh well then i will have to look in to that thank you very much.
Its an ok show but I am not comfortable with all these women on the bridge though.
Live with it.
This is easily the best of nu-trek but that isn't saying much. Since this is still crap.
