This has been one of the longest passion projects I’ve worked on, and I’ve LOVED every second. It's been my absolute honour to work with some of the most talented musicians and artists on this, and everyone involved has put their heart and souls into this project over the last few months. I could not be more PROUD of how it all turned out. Hehe. Yay. 🥳
⚔️ MUSIC ⚔️
I’ve always yearned for a Phantom of The Opera style orchestration of this song. In late 2023, I pitched the idea to my favourite instrumentalist and multi-talented friend, Kāru. The moment he started working on the orchestration, I knew it was going to be magic. PS. can you hear those church bells ringing in the background? because church... it’s in the name. Finger-guns. Wink.
On the vocal end of things, I had written into the very bones (haha) of the vocal arrangement to have a HUGE worship-style gospel choir alongside the leads. I experimented with three different live-choirs before finally landing on Itunu whose sound I truly, truly loved. I had the best time ever recording the leads for this song, and even though I always love the process of recording and arranging vocals, this holds a very special place in my heart. Hozier is truly an artist like no other, and he’s my absolute favourite lyricist of all time so it was just a pleasure and a half to work on this.

The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir!! If you find the concept of sassy necromancer lesbians fighting in fantasy space (+ so, so much more) to be an interesting premise, I promise you won’t regret picking this series up (not sponsored, this entire project was made by fans for fans! I truly am just a nerd at heart)
I finished Gideon The Ninth late 2023 and was immediately obsessed. An idea then fell out the sky and stabbed me through the chest. What if I got a GTN animatic to accompany my cover? The more I thought about the similarities between the story and the song, the more it made sense. So, I crossed my heart and reached out to @cadencelewisart to request a commission! She’s a huge fan of the books as well and I think that love and care really shines through the final scenes. I could not be more pleased with the animatic and I hope you all enjoy it too!

That last chorus HIT wow. The art and song work together so well I was grinning like an idiot the whole way through
Thank you 💜 I wanted the last chorus to sound like Gideon and Harrow singing together in unison, almost melding together into one voice; I also wrote the "take me! take me!" lines with Harrow in mind but I suppose it could go both ways now that I think about it :)

I AM SOBBING. That last chorus with Gideon appearing behind Harrow along with [redacted]... Both music and animation really sold the emotion of that scene. I will never recover. 😭💚

everything that happens after 3:45 is absolutely brutal, but knowing the plot of Harrow the Ninth and hearing 'take me' screamed over and over with heart-rending desperation is like a rapier to the throat. Incredible arrangement decision

your arrangement of lyrics and pacing in gtn is so good, i got GOOSEBUMPS!! when "that looks tasty, that looks plenty" coincided with harrow "vultures and scavengers" speech, when the scene with gideon and cytherea-as-dulcinea was overlaid with "she demands a sacrifice", the fucking AMEN after gideons death??? OUGH YOU GOT ME, fantastic work!!!!

I read this book a couple years back, and it left such an impression.
So strongly, in fact, that I have not reread it once, but I remember most everything that happened.
And I know there are books after it, but it's been... A genuine struggle after her death.
And to see you did an animatic on this story? I kinda cried all over again, just remembering.

I think it’s more symbolic as harrow and Gideon near the very end are only thinking about each other and everything else fades away in that moment

I recognized the amazing art of the animatic immediately. Cadence Lewis is such a great artist and amazing at bringing to live the scenes and the emotions in her animatics, I just don't got the word it is so pretty
She only has two Locked Tomb animatics on her youtube, but I very much recommend checking them out cause they are both in my favorites animatics out there

@@reinaeiry I can tell! Honestly a GTN lens bring so much more to this song, especially if you read some fanfic too. This is my all time favorite serious that my girlfriend (my friend at the time) had to go through three months of me talking about it with her.
I wasn't expecting to be destroyed like that AGAIN by Gideon the Ninth. WHY? WHY I DO THIS TO MYSELF? to see two sapphic universes reunited in gridlehark and reynaeire, that's why! I'm here crying again over a fictional character and I've known her history for 4 years, but of course this musical angel in the form of a woman comes and makes me cry again with a 5-minute animatic. I didn't need to go through this trauma again 😭 But also, thank you dear for this masterpiece, wonderful as always! 💜
