    That's such a great idea - I have often thought that there is scope for manufacturing cutaway type models (Like the famous Old WW1 MkIV tank) showing detailed interiors, a working crew and engine and suchlike. Or an extra large (1to12 or bigger) Merlin engine from the Spitfire in the front end with just the cockpit - as above. Not being awfully clear, but you sort of know what mean I'm sure. I might be a bit odd, but the cockpit and engines are always my favourite bit of building planes. This is the sticky pudding of models for me, and does away with the green vegetables and healthy piece of fruit.

    Good evening Nigel,
    Man, what a gift !!!! I really mean that. Wendy, what a beautiful person you are. Your heart is made of Gold dear. What a gift Nigel . Don’t screw it up and don’t waste your time with it. Build it using all the engineering tech which came to you through a life time of learning. Thoughts must be flooding your mind so don’t screw the pooch. Thank you for all the knowledge you have freely given to all who follow, again thank you.
    Forever in His service.

    Well done, Nigel.....yes, your review made me lash-out the cash....£119 which, considering that that’s a UK offering, inc free P&P, seems like a very nice deal indeed!
    Thanks for putting in all the effort re the reviews, it’s very much appreciated!

    I have to agree, Border Models plastic is great! I've only built their Bf 109 G6 kit, but will definitely be building more.

    Great review Nigel thanks. I'll be interested to understand what you've learned from the full kit when tackling this one and if you plan anything significantly different? I've had my kit since early December (£93 from Hong Kong) but was planning to wait for a build review so I'm going to pull up a seat alongside you... what we used to call "Sitting with Nellie"🙂 I've also been tempted by the Quinta set for this one but this is really very expensive - certainly compared with their other sets. Looks good but not sure if its worth it.
    Just a bit of trivia to add your accumulated knowledge of Lancasters: dad was a W/Op on Lancs and always referred to the radio set (TR1154/55) as the "Eleven-54, Eleven-55". The sort of thing that gets lost to the mists of time so thought I'd mention it... 🤔

    Perfect timing Nigel! I picked mine up today. I’ve ordered the Quinta cockpit set from Hannants and I’ve got the ASK mask set plus a set of brass guns. Reckon I’m good to go!

    I have the intention, to buy this kit too, so I can display a different cockpit area. I am building the full size kit as a Dambuster. I could then build the nose section kit as a model, having H2S and the bombsight in the blister. The full size kit is getting on very well. I am working on the engines, as well as the main landing gear. The fuselage is complete, though still without the "cover' parts on top and bottom. Thanks for this review.

    Nigel: Out of interest, my Lancaster Nose kit was delivered this morning 😜 No breakages on the clear parts but several of them (main canopy, front turret and the larger nose blister) suffered from rubbing!
    As you said, it can be attacked with toothpaste, etc and all should be okay.....just annoying that it should happen at all.
    ATB mate!

    This is nice from border but I agree with you Nigel the hk kit has a lovely Frame that the forward section sits on,definitely more accurate to the production photos of the lanc

  • @memkiii
    @memkiii Před rokem +2

    The Wartime photos of Mickey the Moocher and Victorious Virgin do not seem to have the smaller fwd window. The shots of Phantom do however clearly show this window - so presumably that is the reason for it being the featured nose art. However, all 3 real aircraft had the larger Nose domes, but the box-art shows the smaller BI type fitted. The Lancaster Manual Vol1 clearly shows a padded backrest on the pilots seat, and the parachute is in the seat bucket, but the straps are all tucked out of the way - If you were going to add a pilot - the no straps version with the chute in the seat bucket makes sense.

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  Před rokem

      Many Lancs actually had a cushion for the pilot as the chute was pretty uncomfortable over such a long period. the Pilots chute was often hanging off the back of the seat. in an emergency the flight engineer would grab the pilots and his own chute. You are correct on the window front.. thankyou. In '44 she certainly had the big blister with IFF, but I would imagine in earlier times she had the early blister? Looks like she still had green/aluminium nose turret internals and green then later overpainted black bomb aimer area? Early pitot tube, TR.9 disconnected and a forward trailing aerial.

    • @memkiii
      @memkiii Před rokem

      @@NigelsModellingBench Yes, I imagine crew would not want to sit on a very hard chute pack for hours on end. I have no idea on the interior paint job. It does seem that the only thing you can assume from any particular aircraft photo is that is how the thing looked on the day it was photographed. The Phantom (EE139) was part of a batch of B MkIII built between Nov '42 and June '43, so likely to have always had the larger dome. I do know aircraft built as B MkI did have smaller domes replaced with larger ones, but I'm not sure that BIIIs ever had the smaller domes. I'm more sure that there will be an expert who does know. .

    It’s a really beautiful kit, Border should have done what they’ve done in my kit and put those clears in their own box - mine are superb because of it - they are really to fragile to travel otherwise.

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  Před rokem

      Unfortunately the issue is with the moulding not transportation Phil.

    • @ifthesunrefusedtoshi
      @ifthesunrefusedtoshi Před rokem

      @@NigelsModellingBench It is also with the transportation - mine had a lot of scuff marks and abrasions

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  Před rokem

      If you bought the kit from a retailer in your country I know for a fact the distributors will replace any faulty clear parts. light scuffing can be removed with toothpaste or a dip, this is not unusual in my opinion. I had replacements from Border for my first Lanc and they were lovely.

    • @ifthesunrefusedtoshi
      @ifthesunrefusedtoshi Před rokem

      @@NigelsModellingBench Yes, the light scuffing can be polished out, but it shows that the parts could be better protected. I got mine from a major UK retailer - the owner was very clear that any replacements he could offer me had the same moulding defects

    • @slider2
      @slider2 Před rokem

      My kit too has less than great clear parts. The retailer told me that border models won’t replace them. I emailed border models myself and got no reply. It’s such a shame because the rest of the kit is fantastic, this will be my first and last Border kit.

  • @ifthesunrefusedtoshi

    I've just returned mine, the clear parts were so bad. Personally I don't think it's acceptable for a £120+ kit to have these sort of defects - it could have been done properly, but Border decided to cut corners here. What makes it worse is that customer support is nonexistent, so non-defective spares are not available - they are all like this!

    • @NigelsModellingBench
      @NigelsModellingBench  Před rokem

      The UK distributors have spares... or they DID have spares. I'll let you know how I get in with these being replaced.

    • @ifthesunrefusedtoshi

      @@NigelsModellingBench I got mine from a major UK retailer - the owner was very clear that the spares he had were in a similar condition. Border are getting a free pass from a lot of apologists repeating the border line: 'our clear parts have problems but if your standards are low enough and you don't look too closely they look OK'
