These two species of birds of prey are among the first two be used by humanity in the timeless sport of falconry. But both the Peregrine and the Goshawk have entirely different hunting abilities and techniques used to hunt the exact same quarry species. This video explains the difference between both birds. It teaches their abilities and drawbacks and what factors make them a good or bad choice to work with for your circumstances.

YES ABSOLUTELY! they are each others closest relative, the same ancestral species going seperate ways to different continents and evolving there! And I adore accipiters.

CZcams video excellent comparison. I was involved in Falcon Ray when I was younger. That had to give it up when I started having a family because I couldn't get the bird the time he deserved so I set him free. It was a wonderful expierience. Hopefully more people will fall in love with the sport as a result of your teachings.

You mentioned dogs. Can you discuss in more detail the topic of hunting with falcons and dogs? Does the falcon and the dog want to compete with each other, or worse?

I live around lots of fields and I really want to get into falconry. We have a peregrine and sometimes get kestrels. We also see red tails sometimes but I don’t think it would be easy to find quarry for the bird. If I did start I would try a kestrel because we have lots of sparrows and starlings. I would like to work up to other birds but I will need to learn how to find more prey. We do have some rabbits but not enough that I would want to hunt them.

How often will Coopers hawk hunt after eating a kill ?
    Do they hurt daily ?
Do they use the weather to know when its better to hurt ?

Amazing insight in the comparison of these two iconic and successful falconry birds. A question, are there pros and cons of choosing a male or female for the two? I know females are larger and therefore, maybe better suited if you plan on going for larger prey in their range? Or is a male just as capable to catch the larger prey if they get trained to?
For the peregrine in particular, would a female be safer when it comes to deterring attacks from other birds (multiple ravens, an eagle etc.), or can the smaller male hold his own in the air against them?

Just from observing wild Accipiters in our yard, females are larger (sometimes much larger) and more capable but much more ill-tempered.

I plan to at some point.
Here in the United States, most of our kites are pretty small. I do have friends that back in the old days did fly kites in California. They trained them like kestrel, and found them to be very aerial and acrobatic, but not as spirited of pursuit hunters as a kestrel. Outside of the United States, there are a lot of much larger kites. From those I have talked to, they are incredibly cool to fly and fairly easy to train. But I don’t think people typically hunt with them. But like any bird, they do hunt in the wild so they can be encouraged to hunt More challenging than they would normally take in the Wild. I have been trying to make connections with people. who have worked with them more extensively so that I can make a properly informed video. Hopefully eventually it will happen.

Hey Ben, which species of quail do you like to hunt more with your coopers hawks and male goshawks, bobwhite or california quail? Which one of those two species you find more challenging and attractive to hunt with small/medium accipiters?
