    Hey abandon you didn't really visit the cliffs, they extent for about 4 miles around the cliff path and provide a 360 degree iew of Dublin Bay, also as far As I'm aware Corr Castle is still there among the newly built apartments. But overall top review from a Howth man, thank you.

    it;s an easterly wind today obviously ...and we get easterly wind very frequently every year..and the tide comes in over the pier with easterly gales...Howth is where I was born and bred and up from the big hill to the cliffs is where my family home is .. My father and uncles were all fidhermen in Howth ,,unfortunately our government sold out our fishing industry to the E.U in the 1970's and therefore there are hardly any fishing boats in Howth nowadays....when I was young Howth was a fishing village with roughly 40/50 vessels in the harbour... now you are lucky to find 8/9...instead of being a fidhing village it is now a tourist village...
    at around 5.50, on your video, you can see the remains if an open air swimming pool which is 2 mins from my famiy home...we used to spend all the Summer down there swimming ,,unfortunately in the 90's the steps to that pool collapsed into the sea so now inaccesible
    and Landon dear you never even got to the cliffs , a pity , as the real cliffs are a walk on to the end of that road and then you walk around the cliffs to the Dublin Bay side ,,and see all of Dublin and South county Dublin all laid out before you ,, and it would have taken you about an hour to do the real cliffs,..you missed out on this...
    Howth Castle used always be open to the public, up to the hotel but last year it was sold to a developer ..so now they are trying to restrict people from entering .....behind the hotel are huge Rhododendron woods which when they are in bloom are astonishing ..one of the previous owenrs of the castle used to travel all around the world ( in the 19th century) and collect specimens of Rhododendra,,,and planted them up there on the hill...so there are specimens up there that are very rare...
    yes the way the Irish pronounce Howth is the correct way ,,in fact one of the earliest settlements in Howth was Greek ,,, Ptolemy's map calls Howth 'Edros' meaning base/landing place ..and this would have been from the 300 BC., maybe even earlier...
    the remains of Corr Castle ( a keep ) is in there , but as it is a gated community you do not have access to it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corr_Castle
    at 8,50 you see the ruins of '' the old abbey '' which has been there since the first abbey founded by viking King Sitrygg in 1042..the ruins you see there now are from the 15th century and my grandparents and uncles and aunts are buried there.
    on good calm days (in winter) and all summer you can get boat trips from the end of the west pier ( with all the restaurants ) to the island Ireland's Eye ) or even a trio around the head of Howth across Dublin BAy to either Dublin city centre or to Dunlaoghaire on the opposite side....
    you really only saw about one third of Howth ,, you missed the Summit, where one part of the cliff walk brings you out ,with a 360degree vista of Dublin county north and south
    maybe you coukd come back some time and do the other half of Howth ....

      wow thank you for all of this insight!!! I really appreciate this! this is all things I never knew and incredibly fascinating relating from history, culture, and today. I will definitely use everything you’ve said the next time I’m back (especially all of the rest of Howth I need to see 😊)

    Hey - just a few things make sure not to confuse them when talking about trains. The DART is what takes you to howth not the train!
    You can visit Howth Castle (Deer Park for directions) which was used in the first Dracula movie ever made.
    You can take a 30 minute walk up to the summit and have a view of the entire coastline of Dublin too!
    Kudos for pronouncing Howth correctly too!

    • @landonkissell
      @landonkissell  Před 4 měsíci +1

      oh wow was it really used in the first Dracula movie? wow, that is awesome! I would have loved to see it then. I guess I just didn’t look hard enough. and wow, I wish I did that walking to the summit. that would have been such an amazing view.
      I think I put the regular train b-roll instead of the dart train footage I had. good point, it’s an important distinction.
      and thank you for all of this insight! 😊

    I was walking along the edge of the Howth Cliffs years ago, wearing a pair of wood soled sandals. I hit my foot against a rock and fell. I was caught on a small ledge filled with nettles, six more inches and I would have fallen to the rocks below. I crawled along the edge until I reached the stairs carved in the cliff. That night, I went with friends to see a double feature of LaStrada and the Virgin Spring. I thought about going back to Howth and jumping off. In actuality I rode my bike from Rathmines to Howth all the time. The place is gorgeous. I rode that bike all over Ireland while I was in grad school in Dublin.

    • @landonkissell
      @landonkissell  Před 3 měsíci

      wow I am glad you are okay! That could have been very dangerous, especially with the rocks below. That seems like a traumatizing experience and I am sorry you had to go through that!

    We have a fiord in ireland on the west coast not as spectacular as norway but still spectacular its called killary harbour.Never heard british people say howth at all very much doubt they know it exists.Your correct in your assumption that howth is upmarket as for buying a house there absolutely astronomical.The average price of a house in dublin that is county dublin not just the city is 500 000 euros so in howth its going be atleast twice that. at the very least.

    • @landonkissell
      @landonkissell  Před 4 měsíci

      I just looked up pictures of killary harbour and it look so beautiful. Also do you think the Cliffs of Moher are actually worth it? Or is it more of just a touristy thing?
      And wow so those are million euro homes. I understand why. Those who are able to afford it are incredibly lucky

      @@landonkissell I have always thought the cliffs of moher were over rated before i looked at a video and realised i was looking at wrong.where they have the visitors center and the viewing tower is very underwhelming but a few miles north of the viewing tower it looks much better.However still think slieve league in donegal is much better but its a lot harder to get to and people say the kerry cliffs are great aswell though i was never there myself.A local farmer does a tour of the cliff trail his name is pat sweeney i recommend you that when you come but you need to stay in the area as you wouldn't be able to do it on a day trip from dublin

      @@gallowglass2630 I’ve always thought that there were better places on the island than the cliffs of Moher (although I’ve never been, I just formed that opinion based on pictures). The picture online of Slieve League look amazing. But yeah it does look way more difficult to get to.
      Speaking of natural landscape, one day I would love to make it to Killarney National Park and explore all of Kerry County. There are actually direct flights from New York to Kerry, which surprised me but shows that there is high demand for people to visit
