How Snail Slime Became A Multibillion-Dollar Beauty Industry | Big Business | Business Insider
“The snails aren’t harmed”
*kills snails after extracting every last drop of slime*
It's like a little spa that makes them literally wring themselves out like a soaked towel as a literal defense mechanism.
Oh, and we do this FOUR TIMES, then they aren't worth doing it again and their lifespan has been cut so we end their miserable existence.
AND THEN we proceed to package their corpses for devouring. Pretty ethical huh? much better than just killing them after only one milking, much more efficient this way.
(Notice how none of that makes it better sounding.)
How hypocrisy they are
"we just pour acid on them instead😀😀😀😀"

The acid part was a bit crazy. It's still producing stress.
If you’re saying it’s a defense mechanism that makes them secrete slime… it’s kind of like saying that someone scaring that crap out of you for hours on end and then milking your sweat is a spa day.
How do you think they extract adrenochrome?
Like Monster Inc
Like someone making you run without letting you eat and drink beforehand and collecting your sweat. Or someone making the room hot so you can sweat. Gross

These are snails we are talking about people. Jesus Christ, this isn’t an animal rights issue their snails who cares about snails. 💀
If script writer had just been honest about the snails dying, then I would not mind. However, during 90% of this video the narrator says that the slime-extracting machine does not kill the snails. Only near the end do you learn that yes, indeed, they do kill the snails with ozonated water.
Yeah, I think the point they were making is that they don't kill the snails in order to get the slime. This way, they get more slime per snail because they're alive making it rather than just getting the slime that they release when they die. I think it was more an efficiency point rather than a anti-animal cruelty point. But I agree, the way they say it is pretty misleading
But they don’t kill them to make slime they kill then to make other products liek actually eating the snails and using their shells
In all fairness, there not being waisted, everything is being used, can't be any better I say🤷 Although I do agree it's misleading
Yeah right it was like 5min of how great this new process is cuz it’s non-lethal to the snails and then there last 10sec they like but we kill them anyway.
@@James-9999 it's great cause it revolutionized the amount of slime they are able to harvest, while aslo being able to use the snail as food after😉

Oh my god, literally no one saw that twist coming! "We used to kill them to get the slime, now we extract it ethically, and then we kill them anyway! **SHOWS FOOTAGE OF SNAILGUTS SCOOPED FROM SHELLS** LMAO
The question for me isn't even if the snails die at the end, but how "more ethically" they consider this whole operation to be. They've only found a way to produce more slime before killing the snails, by exposing them to an stressful environment. It more or less "extends the torture", rather than minimizes it.
I am wondering where the snails got their army of trolls to defend their reputation online..

This sounds to me like they created a procedure that places the snails into an environment they where they'll feel dangerous enough to release their defenses mechanism. They continue to do this enough times to drain out all bodily fluids until they eventually are too weak to produce any more slime in which case they're killed. It's like a scientific way of sprinkling salt water onto the snail to get it to feel like it's getting water tortured.
Look I get what they're to say but lets call it like it is. it's a better mouse trap. It's not good for the snails. You've only found a new way to get more slime out before you kill them. Don't make it out to sound like you're doing the snails a favor.
yeah i think the whole thing was painted a bit too positivly
Well, what did you expect? Is there truly a meat business without murder? Is there a single sustainable company? You use all of the animal, and let it reproduce for generations to come. Sure it's a bit positive. But what did you expect?
It's funny how people draw a very vague line in the sand when something is considered animal cruelty. Yes I know it's a snail and by all scientific standing, I can more than guarantee that they have provided research saying snails don't have pain receptors and so on and so forth, but when you scale up the research- would it be ok if say a duck produced the same enzymes under similar circumstances? What about a horse? Chimpanzee? If the extract works, whatever fine, but it's torturing and stressing out the snails, don't paint it as anything but. I could imagine the very same researchers if you place them in the room and sprayed them constantly with a mildly caustic agent to produce I don't know, tears that cure baldness, and claimed it was ethical because the subjects were being fed and they had a room and things to occupy their mind: you're still causing a good amount of pain to create the solution. Rationalizing is an interesting concept to see in practice 😂
keep crying 😂

“That’s not the end of it! The snails go through this process about three or four times before they are euthanised with a highly concentrated solution of ozonated water.” As if snails asked to be killed this way by signing a consent form. Does this narrator understands what she meant by this sentence after using the term “without killing them”500 times before ? 🤯
As if the narrator was the one to write the script
And neither do other animals
this method uses fewer snails for the same amount of slime and they can also be sold as food like always has been the case before slime beauty products. how does anyone find this operation bad? that same snail would before be 3 snails 2 for slime and 1 for food for the same amount of materials. they are food, to begin with so no matter the other uses they would always be killed to be eaten the same for milk cows. they will also end in a burger and just get to live a lot longer than normal cows. any farm animal passing away any other way is a waste of resources now that is wasteful and polluting.
@@slayin9331 as if the narrator doesn't have her own brain.
Weird choice of words by the narrator. Just admit they were harmed and killed
I'm a cosmetics formulator and there are literally thousands of skincare ingredients that are not made from snails that work really well. We have better more ethical options why are we still doing shit like this??
Can you recommend a healthy synthetic alternative that you like?
Would’ve been a lot better to *not* emphasize how the extraction process doesn’t harm the snails before explaining that they are euthanized anyways, especially considering there’s no proof it doesn’t harm them; nociception in mollusks is not well understood. Regardless of whether it “hurts” or not, the snails are releasing the slime as a defense mechanism, which makes it clear they are distressed by the process; stress can be quite damaging to many creatures. Just be honest and say that the snails are livestock and eventually get harvested once they stop producing enough slime. It’s not that hard.
I’m not one of those people who will argue against the industry as a whole, as ultimately the snails are treated well for the vast majority of their lifespan and have a better life than their wild counterparts, but I am against the misleading reporting. It’s good that nothing goes to waste, but as someone who’s fairly interested in invertebrate welfare, I’m also basing my views of the process on the assumption that the method of euthanasia is quick and relatively painless. If anyone knows for sure if the process is humane or just an alternative to freezing- which is slow and painful(imagine having needles forming inside your flesh and stabbing you from the inside, that’s what it’s like due to ice crystals) and has been deemed unethical by some experts- I’d appreciate an explanation, since one isn’t given in the video.
They should have said yeah we kill the snails but they st least is not for nothing
The fact that people would rather put snails on their faces and not in their faces should show their general stupidity.
@@aaroniouse i dont understand your point as to why your calling it stupid….
nobody cares about snails , focus on the planet and global warming
@@johansjournal Snails are part of the planet, my guy. They’re an essential part of the ecosystems they belong to and, like it or not, also provide income that some people rely on. The only thing really up for discussion here is animal welfare, and I believe living creatures should be treated with some level of respect regardless of how intelligent we perceive them to be. Besides, if people are allowed to care about animals that humans made(most dog and cat breeds, city pigeons, and feral animals come to mind, all of which came about as a direct result of human actions), why can’t others care about species that originated in nature? The planet is more than just temperatures.
Trying to get on peoples’ cases for not discussing climate change and whatever other manmade bullshit is going on when they’re discussing something that conceptually applies to all animals on earth is kinda counterproductive. It doesn’t matter if the temperature of the ocean gets fixed tomorrow if people don’t care about the creatures living there, it doesn’t matter if every poacher gets caught and executed on live TV if people ignore every other problem being faced by what those poachers hunted. Ultimately, any time an animal is removed from its ecosystem, that ecosystem is weakened and thrown out of balance. Sometimes in more noticeable ways, sometimes in ways humans won’t notice until decades have passed. As such the goal is to encourage people to care for all creatures to some degree, even if they aren’t cute or cuddly or cool or fun to look at. Otherwise the planet will just suffer in different ways, or even in the same ways for different reasons.
So, to be blunt, go whine on someone else’s comment, this is a pro-snail zone and there’s nothing you can do about it. Metaphorically you’re getting mad at folks for wasting time doing things other than making plans to deal with dry rot when the issue they’re focusing on currently is wildfire prevention. We can do both, it’s not a one or the other issue. Stop treating it like one.
"Stimulated" sounds kind of pleasant, but "tormented" or "tortured" would probably be more accurate.

No one would talk about how they would extract the slime other than one company saying they let the snails run over screens. Like, how? And how do they increase slime production? Also, what happened to the snail AFTER? Did they become food? Guess my suspicions were right. I am glad this company allowed reporters in and consumers can learn more about what it is like. I don’t know if I will believe a cruelty free label on any snail beauty product.
There's many ways. Some will do it like in the video, some handle the snail one by one rubbing their belly for a few seconds until they released the mucin, some will have them roam on a mesh so that the mucin pass through it. Some will then use them for food, and some will keep them alive for their natural lifespan. It depends on the type of snail (some use the giant african ones for example).

With that "torture and kill" kind of process, the product is likely lacking any property besides damaging ones.
But the agony adds so much nutrients
Generally, vetrinarians only "euthenise" a pet animal if the animal would die without any intervention in less than a week anways. I doubt that there was anything medically wrong with the snails they dump into the ozonated water. Lack of honesty in news reporting is more what I hope that people will be upset about than the actual snails deaths.
finally someone said it 👏👏👏
It’s a snail farm. They eat the snails.
I think a lot of people missed the part where they eat the snails. Eating snails requires you remove the mucus beforehand. This is just a more ethical and efficient way of doing so.
not ethical but more efficient.
You are the first sane person I've seen in this comment section.
@@shubhammeena5177 ethical compared to the old way.
Idk about ethical but I suppose it is efficient and more profitable...
@@RustMonsterMilk in what sense dying immediately its worse and less ethical than being poisoned after being sprayed with acid 3 days.
Little spa for snail is so not true. It's more cruel process than traditional method inorder to extract maximum slime from each snail.
Got any better ideas?

I never knew snails were used like this.
At least the suffering of snails were a lot quicker in the early days, now this has becomes essentially extended torture and killing them.
is this a joke ?? not harming them ?? extract all slime then kill them ...
So that new spongebob movie wasn’t joking around when the dude wanted gary for his slime
Why are people upset over this? It's efficient and zero waste harvest, and it's no different from harvesting thousands of domesticated animals like silkworms or chickens.
I'm still grossed out by the bacterial potential that's completely irreversible..... 🤢
People flip out over these things but I promise they never actually research anything about the make-up, materials, foods, etc... Come from, how it's made, etc.... It's just something for them to outrage over for a few days and then forget about.... They rarely understand the reality behind things.
🙄
@Boa-Noah No, the Americans just dunk chicken in chlorine baths and then cut their dead off - or, if they are male chickens, they often crush them or gas them at birth.
People are upset because the narrator repeatedly made a big deal about not killing them, only for them to be euthanized a few minutes later. It's misleading and totally false.
If they had been up front about it, and not tried to somehow say the process is better than it actually is, then the video would have been much better.
@@crazy808ish the process is actually genius since this gives you more slime with less snails and gives you a perfectly edible one at the end too. snail are food not a dog (unless you korean or Chinese or from some African tribes.) using less snails should be something to be celebrated or you prefer to kill 3 instead of one all 3 would die in acid anyway.
@@lucaskp16 I have no problem with the process. I have a problem with how Business Insider decided to say it.
When the entire world is shifting towards cosmetics labeled “animals were not harmed”, you promote a process that does exactly that! And then call it “snails were not harmed”. What a pile of BS!

ikr, snails taste awesome when cooked correctly. My local buffet serves snails in chili sauce
I was horrified to hear that they kill them anyway. Not to mention the fact that there is little to prove the effectiveness of the products to begin with.
Thanks for supporting the channel.
Lets be real here, what are they supposed to do? If they were to release millions of snails each year, it would be horrible for the ecology of the area. Euthanizing the snails and turning them into nourishment for thousands of people is probably the best/least damaging outcome.
Cough syrup? I don't think I wanna know what that tastes like. And glad they mentioned K-beauty being already very involved in snail biz & for much cheaper than $60
Sounds like some kind of scam to be honest. Beauty industry is very VERY fond of fake science and buzz words, and I suspect this "snail fad" isn't based on anything serious.

‘It will end up in skincare products all over the world’ I will never touch any skincare products then.
The video linked is very much the process developed in Italy and not the process that COSRx use according to them. If COSRx do use this process for harvesting mucin then they having been lying which would be of great concern on so many fronts. I like to occasionally use the COSRx Advanced Snail 92 All in one cream in the evening as my moisturiser. This although appears "gloopy" to the touch glides effortlessly onto the skin. I find that snail mucin certainly helps with hydration and does gives me a clearer softer skin tone. As for skin aging I think it would be very difficult to prove any one particular product I use helps with that unless I used it consistently without other products.
I don't use products that I am aware are produced in a way that involves animal cruelty OR whose profits are directed towards companies who sanction animal testing. I think however, that there is an awful lot of hypocrisy, which I loathe, with regards to animal cruelty as many may not use skincare produced in such a manner but wouldn't bat an eyelid knowing that some of their medication/drugs are tested or even produced directly in a manner involving animal cruelty. I personally don't believe my health justifies cruelty to another creature and don't think I am any more important to this world than they are.
I accept we all have differing opinions and each of us has to answer to our own conscience wherever that may lead.
Have you found anywhere where cosrx actually disclose how they get the mucin? Cause I think they are lying, I can't find transparent info from them anywhere on this apart from them saying it doesn't harm them (and the way cosrx has refered to giving their snails a spa makes me wonder if it is the same machine as these guys also pertain that the acidic solution does not harm the snails). If they actually were getting the mucin from just letting the snails roam around on a meshwith no stimulus they would be getting so little out of them that the prices definately would be luxury.
I use the snail mucin 96 and the snail mucin 92 cream is coming. I feel bad. Do you know how COSRX extracts snail mucin?
A sincere suggestion to Business Insider " please stop promoting and investing in such contents where animals are harmed all for the sake of sense gratification of external beauty".
Makes my stomach upset seeing such people.
Honestly they're farm grown, much better than people who go hunt down wild Snails for business. We do the same thing for cows, ducks, chickens, pigs, etc

The video just ended. So out of curiosity I watched this and am very saddened by what I have learned. The other video was some false advertising.
Honestly we need to have more emphasis on testing these products correctly, it's one thing to cause harm for some benefit to humanity, it's so much worse if we're doing it to gain no benefit at all.
But they are used as a gourmet appetizer. I understand if you are a strict vegetarian but if not there is a reason as snails are eaten and at a high price.
Ordered Snail Rescue from Amazon and a rash I had struggled with for weeks disappeared in two days!!
I clean my lettuce very well to avoid rat lung worm disease from it being passed to lettuce from snails and slugs and people are smearing it on their faces to have smooth skin???? 🤦♀️

I definitely agree we need to take these snails to space on a rocket. Maybe we can send a snail torture machine into space as well in case we encounter anything we want to use it on
Are you with PETA, or some snail-rights movement funded by the CCP? NPR will distract you from reality. Prayer is all we really have.
The change is that once they used to kill them, now they first torture and exploit them and then kill them, sounds more humane to the insider team maybe🤦🏻
Snail mucin is one of my favourite skin care products. I’m so glad they have found a ethical way to extract snail mucin
Its not ethical. The snails die and suffer

He literally invented a torturing device to spray acid rain onto the snails.
Considering the amount of all kinds of chemicals put on cosmetics, no wonder a lot of women have to worry about many types of cancer; ie skin or breast cancer.
Skin cancer comes from uv rays damaging your dna and is exacerbated by our faulty ozone layer, has nothing to do with cosmetics.

They are lying about the acidic solution not doing harm to those snails.
Why don't they use snails without shells, i think those would yield more.
you mean like slugs?
@@braunarsch yes, but where I'm from we have both slugs and slugs that look like snails without shell. There could be some reason behind not using slugs for this process.
Homosapien has acid in their body, but why ain't it harms them as well?
I've had both snails and slugs as pets, snails tend to be out in the open on plants, and slugs like to hid in crevices. It is probably easier to harvest snails.
Both snails and slugs mucus is known to contain deadly parasites in a lot of cases, these companies don't explain any sterilizing processes so I'm kinda concerned.
I use snail face cream I love it!!
The snails are usually killed by pouring salt or vinegar on them. Here they just sprinkle vinegar on them to stimulate the mucus glands which is like punching a man till he bleeds. I don't mind the fact that you are killing them but there must be atleast some honesty in the script.
Dunno but some snails can also be used by flatworms for completing their life cycle.
What they eat affects the slime. Giving them an unhealthy diet the slime doesn’t have the maximum nutrients.
They feed the snail grains and greenery tough, doesn't sound unhealthy
@@Tsuruchi_420 Yeah right, you didn't hear what she said about their food? They feed them cabbage spinach and a "mixture" of flours from soya and corn and other stuff.
Well soya and corn it is produced mainly in USA and China and they are genetically modified! Well don't expect to be the other way around because simply the globally demand amount cannot supply those huge amounts. If you are not growing your self your corn and soya then everything from the rest is cancerogenic, stay away from from them. You want snails? Go to nature and pick up few from your grandmother farm or in forest. Do not trust anything that's coming from an animal farm even if it's labelled Organic.
@@warrior4999 dude, genetic modified plants just get DNA from different plants grafted into their own, some get DNA from a few species of animals too, none of Wich are carcinogenic or whatever, and you're right, without genetic engineering large amounts of grain could not me produced to the scale we need to feed everyone, so it's not only non-carcinogenic, but also nescessary
