After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadwayâs The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars OscarÂź winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz Universityâs regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadwayâs Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphabaâs favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 OscarÂź nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. I'm not a fan of Ariana but hearing her say "I love her so much, I'll take such good care of her" was so genuine, it made me smile.
I wasn't onboard with the Ari casting at first but seeing her in just the little bit of footage we've seen, I can't imagine anyone else playing this part. And that "I'll take such good care of her" had my eyes watering.

I wasn't really a fan of hers until she did a photoshoot with some friends of mine who own a small production company in LA, and they had so many positive things to say about her. It wasn't just generic praise, but specific moments and interactions with Ariana that painted a portrait of a sincerely kind person and good collaborator. I still wouldn't say I'm a fan of her genre of music, but as I began to see her less as a celebrity and more as a real person that my friends actually spent time with and said good things about, I grew to really appreciate her talent and respect her work.

For anyone who's nervous, Jon M. Chu directed the criminally underrated "In the Heights" adaptation. "In the Heights" was full of so much joy and life; it was exactly what a movie adaptation of a musical should be. I have supreme confidence that this adaptation of "Wicked" will make everyone happy.
I absolutely agree. I was so skeptical about seeing In The Heights on screen but Chu brought it to life beyond my wildest expectations. It really redefined the standard for film adaptations of stage musicals in my opinion. And based on how much love and care each and every person on this cast and crew is putting into this and sharing, I have no doubt Wicked's two films are going to be among the highest grossing in their respective release years. I also see so much attention to detail in these few short clips we've gotten to see so far and those sorts of details really speak to just how much TLC has gone into these films.
I remember being in musical heaven already before In The Heights when I found out Jon was going to direct Wicked. Iâm 31 and both musicals take me back to my teen years.

@@lordgalaxy1684Wicked has been around for over 20 years and the original Wicked book has been released over 29 years! Also the original Wizard of Oz book is full of great female leaders who ruled Oz before the Wizard! Itâs okay if you didnât like it, if you donât want to see it then donât see it!

To see Ariana Grande cry for getting a job like was the most humanly satisfying experience ever. Even great Achievers have dreams, and the fact that she feels the weight of the responsibility taking on a character this huge was breathtaking. Both actresses seem so passionate and perfect for the job, canât wait to see them both perform on the silvery screen.

I just can't wait for this!!! Cynthia has just a voice that soars so effortlessly. She is going to be a fantastic Elphaba. Ariana looks so angelic and having to let go of the singer image of Ariana, she is for me perfect for Glinda.
Honestly these ladies were the best choices for these roles, bar none.

@@sabsain2399 Wicked is a very popular (yes I did that on purpose) broadway show since 2003, very, very loosely based on the book âWicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.â It tells the story of the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz. It is mainly prequel to Wizard of Oz, but the second act runs alongside the Wizard of Oz, with scenes that could be inserted in between the scenes of the original Wizard of Oz movie.
I love that it's actual sets and not all green screen.. can't wait for the film!

I went to see Wicked alone when it was in LA with Meghan Hilty and Eden Espinoza. I had no idea what to expect. I didnât know anything about the story. I was so moved by this play. The themes of being different and defending your integrity. About friendship and loyalty. The scene where Elphaba flies with the broom for the first time in Defying Gravity was so powerful that I got choked up. I canât wait for the movies. The casting is so brilliant. Cynthia and Ariana were meant for these roles. â€
I first saw Wicked with Eden and Megan too. And Iâve been into musical theatre ever since. I was a 14 year old 7th grader and Iâm 31 now. Iâve waited 17 years for this moment.

I had never seen the stage play/musical. But having done some research on the background of this story and the book it is based upon, it makes sense that this will be a two part film. The themes in this go into a very emotional journey and presents multiple questions. I'm guessing that this film will be very faithful to the play and the book, this is based on seeing the trailer. I love the casting choices and the magical air of this film. Looking forward to this

After seeing more scenes and footage from the movie and hearing how grateful and changed they were because of Wicked, I can tell they put so much love, care, passion and hard work into this movie. Wicked has been my favorite show since I was a teenager and Iâm so beyond ready to see Ariana and Cynthia shine as my two favorite witches đđ©·đ
I give, AND LET. ME. EMPHASIZE. THIS, NO đ F***s đ about whatever drama happened behind the scenes.
We donât know these people. We donât know their lives. Our judgments in regards to romance, betrayal or whatever the f you want to call it is completely unneeded and unwarranted because WE DO NOT KNOW THEM.
So, with that being said, this looks amazing. Ariana clearly values this role more than any other she has ever played and probably more than any music she has ever made. This response is the response of someone that I would trust with a role so important.
So, I am going to see the film and I hope that it is as passionate and beautiful as the responses these ladies had to receiving their roles.

i watched Wicked as my first broadway experience when i was small and the world felt big. i remember every scene. sharing their complete excitement - wicked is one of those rare plays that brings out the good in you and I love that they chose such doting fans of the musical to be in it
