"Is this the potato farm?"
"Yes, I am Albert Potato."
There's a crazy connection between Top Secret and Rogue One. The old man in the bookstore with the big eye is Peter Cushing, who played Tarkin in Star Wars. The reason they were able to model a CGI Tarkin for Rogue One is because they have a cast of his head from Top Secret.
,, I swear the farming scene in Rogue One is straight-off lifted from Hitchcock's East German cold war spy movie 'Torn Curtain' w/ Paul Newman & Julie Andrews 🚜🌿
Also a connection to Batman Forever...
…and with Lawrence of Arabia
Peter Cushing great as always was this his last movie or was it
" Biggles adventures in time "
Well that was another underrated great cool movie worth watching
And don't forget Top Gun....
SO glad this film is still finding an audience. For years it was the forgotten ZAZ movie and now a lot of reactors are finding that it's their favourite
I don't know if it's forgotten or just overshadowed by the two breakout hits it got sandwiched between. but I'm glad too.
I was so happy to see this!!
This is the best one IMO. The combination of over-the-top ridiculousness and actually really clever and innovative ideas is unmatched
A bit of trivia. This was Val Kilmer's first film, followed shortly by Real Genius, both of which are comedies. Val sang all the songs you heard him singing in the film for realsies. Pro Tip: when satching any of the films made by the Zuckers you will want to read through the credits as they are FULL of additional jokes and silliness.
Real Genius! I recorded that and My Science Project on the same VHS tape after they played on the Move Channel back in the day.
i mean, after prince of egypt i'm not surprised. The man can sing
@@bumfricker2487 he also sang in the Doors movie.
,, he played Elvis in Tarantino's True Romance 💞
Strongly recommend Real Genius.
“Just something my father thought up while shaving.” 😂🤣
Great reaction! Val Kilmer is actually singing in this movie, it’s incredible. He also gives a great performance as Jim Morrison in The Doors.
there is nothing incredible about that.just like in present, having great voice means NOTHING.
Someone probably can’t even carry a tune in a five gallon bucket. But, whatever.
The Doors is Val's best movie, Tombstone is the Kmart version of Wyatt Earp.
For those who didn't live through the 80's. The "Montgomery Ward Mailing List" joke referred to MW being the "Off Brand" department store. They released multiple LARGE catalogs per year. You know those small phonebooks you get on your porch every year? Imagine getting one in the mail 4-5 times a year, along with monthly invites to "Private sales" and "Store Blowouts"... If you were on their list, you threw a lot of junk mail away. People complain, but there was far more junk mail back then.
The spam of the 80s.
When I was a kid I used to love laying on the living floor looking through the Sears catalog and turning page after page saying "I want that. I want this. I want that." but never realizing that $5 for a cheap toy was a lot of money.
My mom worked for Sears and my dad, for a time, worked at a Montgomery Wards. We got ALL the huge catalogs.
@@thereturningshadow Story for my childhood!
The 70/80s was a great time to be a kid in the western world.
The Sears Catalog especially was like a dream shopping encyclopedia when I was a kid. I made imaginary lists of stuff I would get when I got old enough to buy things.
30:22 - Yes, the Ford Pinto had a design flaw in which the fuel tank was positioned in the back underside of the car making it vulnerable to ruptures, leaks, and fuel vapor entering the cabin in the event of a rear-end collision. There were several reported explosions and deaths and it became a huge scandal between Ford and government regulatory agencies.
TY for saving me from all that typing.
There was even a movie about it. Though I think it was made for tv. Can't recall. In the movie, they explain how even a relatively minor collision could make a spark from the rear lights ignite the fuel tank.
That joke was taken differently in Europe , Pinto was no car model that was sold in Europe , so them hitting it lightly was takes as a joke on movie cars generally , when all movie cars always exploded from tinies things .
Saddest part of Pinto was that FORD counted that fixing all cars with and parts , those would cost them less than $20 per car , was more expensive than to pay out compensation to possible victims and their families , over 3 mil Pintos mades and about 900 burn victims , i think it would have been cheaper to fix the cars .
Some owners of the Ford Pinto would put the fire decals on their car facing backwards. I know one of ‘em 😂
Ironic because deaths rates in Pintos were about the same as every other american car of its type at the time.
"Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" and "Real Genius" are great Val Kilmer comedic roles. "Heat" is another great dramatic performance
Real Genius is probably my favorite Val Kilmer movie. "This is Jesus, Kent and you've been a very naughty boy."
Ummmmm, WILLOW??!!!!!
@@theplanetruth this may be my greatest oversight... ever. Madmartigan is one of my favorite characters from childhood
I can't watch 'Real Genius' because the actor in it looks like Sarah Jessica Parker who looks like a horse
K k b b was a terrible movie.
It is a spoof mix of spy films and Elvis films. The waiter in the fancy restaurant was speaking yiddish.
The swedish bookstore man was Peter Cushing, who also played Gran Moff Tarkin in Star Wars. They made a plaster cast of his face for the prosthetic makeup. The cast was found decades later and scanned for making the CGI Tarkin in Star Wars: Rogue One.
You know what is funny, the dude who died from that "Device" who died with a smile on his face, was the same actor who played in Golden Eye who was killed by Onatop who Bond found dead with a massive smile on his face.
Wow! Awesome pull.
As a little German, I have to say this one is so wonderfully goofy. A huge amount of "What is happening in the background?" humor, as well as the most effort for the most subtle humor. The amount of work necessary to do the underwater saloon fight makes it one of my favorite sequences ever.
The Ford Pinto was notorious for its tendency to explode during rear end collisions, due to the placement of the fuel tank.
they had bumper stickers you could put on that said "I drive a Pinto and I know how to use it". There were many movies and tv shows of the time that jumped on that particular joke. A tap and Boom!
@@tomyoung9049 Some people put fire decals on their ford pintos going backwards.
The bookstore owner, Sven Jorgensen, is played by the legendary Peter Cushing.
.ecnamrofrep taerg ylurt A
You appear to have missed one hilarious aspect. The guy who was smooshed into the car was the great, distinguished actor Omar Sharif, whose most prominent roles were in "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago." To see him be a good sport and make an appearance in such a ridiculous role was delightful.
Well they would have to know who Omar Sharif was, and many of the famous older actors would be unknown to them.
The jimmy carter-balloon joke that flew right over your head was about this being one method used by people fleeing from east germany over the border to the west..^^
The movie was filmed in England, the surfing scene was actually in Newquay, Cornwall where the sea temperature was about 50 degrees. The motorcycle jump was performed by British stuntman Eddie Kidd and I believe it was his last successful jump before the one that put him (sadly) in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Don't think it would have been his last successful jump. The accident happened in 96
I love your reaction.
This is actually my favorite Zucker film. I saw it again with the director giving a talk as part of the screening, with an audience full of fans. The audience cheered the loudest for the underwater fight scene, but I cheered more for my favorite: the backwards scene.
Also Weird Al’s favorite, so we are in great company.
I can’t help but laugh at the guy running for the tree.
That scene made the Rogue One use of Grand Moff Tarkin possible. The VFX department of Top Secret! made the sculpted head with the magnified eye, and the sculpture was found decades later and used to make the digital model by the SFX team for Rogue One.
The backwards scene is my favorite gag in the movie.

Oh dang! Finally. I knew you guys would like it. There’s so many funny moments like the Swedish book store but the part where Nick crawls up to the empty boots gets me every time.
,, the book store always reminds me of Pop Leibel's Argosy shop in Vertigo (1958) 🔍📚
Said it before I'll say it again... despite all the technological advances since this film, it still has the best underwater bar fight scene in any movie.
well...
...ok...
@@Gravydog316 Well said.
The backing singers in the concert are the Jordanaires, who used to do the same for Elvis Presley.
Val Kilmer's first movie and he sings the songs himself.
Underrated and often overlooked. Glad you're checking it out.
Yes, Ford Pintos had a nasty habit of fuel tanks exploding, especially when the car was re-ended.
The "Tutti-Frutti" dance at the end is the greatest thing ever! 33:43
If you have never seen it, the Val Kilmer movie you really must see is "Real Genius". it is by far my favorite Val Kilmer movie and features one of the most amazing ways to destroy a house in film history.
"Do you wanna see a demonstration of gravity?!"
“I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates when he said...I drank what”
"Chris Knight: Here Mitch, taste this. Go on, you won't hurt my feelings, just try it. What do you think, too sweet?
Mitch: What is it?
Chris Knight: I don't know, I found it in one of the labs."
"Can you drive a railroad spike through a board with your penis?"
"Not right now."
"A girl has got to have her standards."
Great 80s goofy movie - it doesn't hold up as well because most of its humor has been done to death over the years.
As you noted, many of the jokes can be anticipated because they're so commonplace nowadays, or dated like the Montgomery Ward joke.
Back when it was released, this was _hilarious_ to me, as a teenager growing up bored in the midwest.
One of my favorites, and that Swedish bookstore scene is amazing!
22:04 I think this scene provides _unique_ insight into the mastery one has to have of the ability to do and say _utterly absurd_ things, straight-faced. I would go as far as to say the _best_ kind of comedic actor is one who has this ability.
I am so glad you guessed the Pinto joke. I don't feel like typing.
I love y'alls reaction videos! I suffer with manic depression & watching y'alls vids really help me get through days where I'm just down in the dumps. You two seem like a REAL couple with good hearts 💕. Keep up the great work!

It does help in a small way believe me
Every little bit of positivity and family love goes a long way....these two cowboys help me not want to kill republicans.
My mom’s favorite movie. Rest In Peace and Harmony, Mom. I miss you dearly.
It was 1974 they stopped production of the Ford Pinto because the gas tank was so close to the back bumper that when they were rear ended in accidents they had several of them explode.
Normally the Hatch Back which body style was in the movie. The Station Wagon Pinto didn't seem to have the issue, but 1974 was the last year.
Amazingly though 1974 to 1978 they made the Mustang 2 in Coupes and Hatchbacks and you could see that they were a super close relative of the Pinto.
Fun fact:The pinto was renowned for catching on fire easily when hit from behind
You have to watch Real Genius too, another early Val Kilmer movie.
The guy crushed into a cube while in the car was an older James Bond reference but I dont want to spoil if you haven't seen it, so I wont give too much detail on it.
I’ll be 43 this year, and the fact that they knew nothing of the now-defunct department store chain Montgomery Ward makes me feel 30 years older than that. 😬😂
Still one of my favorite movies as a kid growing up in the 80s
The Pinto joke was from the early 70's, they were known to blow up when hit from behind. The poor design of the Pinto's fuel tank and rear end made it vulnerable to crashes, even at low speeds, in which the fuel tank would suffer extreme damage and catch on fire, often trapping the car's occupants inside. Twenty-seven people died in Pinto fires and countless others suffered serious burns.
I believe that this is the finest film from the Airplane directing crew.
Airplane and Naked Gun are, of course, classics, but this one is just the top and btw, Val Kilmer first role on the big screen.
Another movie of them that is never mentioned yet really good is Ruthless People. It's not like their other movies, which are absurdist comedies, it plays out straight as a black comedy crime thriller, but the cast of Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Beth Midler, Helen Slater and Bill Pullman are all in their top form.
I love "Ruthless People" as a kid, and haven't seen it in years. It's weird, as a kid I liked a lot of Bette Midler films, now that I think about it. I'll have to look it up, thanks for the reminder!
My favorite Val Kilmer comedy movie is Real Genius. Love that movie
Montgomery Ward was a department store that would send out catalogs of their merchandise. They were like J.C. Penny's or Sears or by today's standard Target. That was a truly funny line to those who understood it
Yep....and now I feel old AF.
*Penney's
Somehow it's a World War 2 movie mixed with a James Bond movie mixed with an Elvis movie, with Beach Boys songs. Yet it's set in 1984.
I'd forgotten how funny this film was thanks for watching it guy's 👍.
Yep, the Ford Pinto joke was a time-specific recall from that period. There was some risk that rear impacts would dangerously contact the gas tank.
The guy playing Deja Vu is Jim Carter who played Carson, the Butler of Downton Abbey
I loved the cow suit scene even as a kid before I fully understood what was happening to him.🤣
They built Pintos with bolts that protruded toward the gas tank, during a rear end crash the bolts would puncture and ignite the gas inside.
Wow what a surprise didn't expect you to react to this great movie. This is from the same directors and Airplane and The Naked Gun Trilogy. Other great Val Kilmer movies are Wilow and The Saint.
And Real Genius!!!
All good Kilmer flicks...and his cameo in True Romance.
2:21 When you say something wrong, and you get called out on it, yet you still try to act like you were right. 🤣
He was also wrong about Nick being sent to Germany to spy. The Mister needs to exercize some patience.
Great reaction. LOVED the John Stockton shout out. Val Kilmer did his own singing. Your reactions are always a fantastic watch.
My mom and cousin took me to see this in the theaters. It’s so funny! Glad you enjoyed.
"Wow! They'd have enough salt to last forever!"
9:35 When we've reached the period when we're nostalgic for the Carter administration.
Without a doubt, my favorite bit is the priest speaking Latin phrases on the way to the electric chair. Almost passed out from laughing in the theater when I first saw it always makes me smile to this day.
In Pig Latin he says “I’m going to get fried in the electric chair.”
I remember when I saw this in the theater, I predicted the scarecrow joke. The biggest laugh in the theater for me was the "Those bikes!" gag. On video, it was Dr. Flammond's line: " If they find out you've seen this, your life will be worth less than a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory." That reduced myself and two friends to tears and we had to rewind the tape a few times to make sure we had heard the line correctly.
Also, the bit with the Pinto got a big laugh in the theater.
Real Genius is another really good 80's Val Kilmer movie.
This has always been one of my favorite spoofs. It even has the guy that plays Alfred in the Batman movies of the 80's and 90's.
yeah they made a good point that future batman and future alfred were in this movie. i have to watch batman forever again to see if they made any kind of inside joke to top secret.
This is one of the funniest movies ever in my opinion. So many great lines, so many great sight gags. The ballet scene alone is worth the price of admission.😂👍
21:56 - A joke most people miss in this scene was Nick saying he was asked to help out in pre-teen maternity. Maternity...for girls 12 and under.
There’s about 100 jokes that people miss in this, especially when they’re reviewing rather than just enjoying it. Needs about four views to catch them all.
The story of the Ford Pinto is; a whistle blower revealed internal documents that Ford new the cars exploded on impact, but decided not to fix the issue because it was cheaper to pay the occasional wrongful death law suit than to fix the car.
I quote the little horse joke all the time. As well as walk into random rooms saying "niiii"
My favorite line in the movie you didn't show here was when Dr. Flammond says to Nick, "If they find out you've seen this, your life will be worth less than a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory.”
Interesting eye movement at 10:35 :D
Nick was rescued from the firing squad by the phone call that the elderly lady with the walker was answering.
Good thing those East Germans were so thorough with their firing squad preparation.
Skeet surfing is legendary.
my favorite gag was at the train station. When the whole station pulled away was funny enough but then they went bonkers with it and had the tree moving and then the business man trying to catch the tree like he was late for a train lmao.
A close second would be the backwards swedish shop.
The Actor playing the real Spy, who eventually ends up cubed with his vehicle is Omar Sharif. He is the most famous male Egyptian star, he is best known for his roles in Lawrence of Arabia & Doctor Zhivago. Both big budget classic films in the early `60`s. As far as I am aware, like Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves & Robert Stack in Airplane, he had never done any comedy before.
I've seen this many times, it's so good 😙👌🏼
The " funny dog-poo " skit and when Nick meets the " French underground resistance ", the black dude though ... hilarious, had me in stitches as a kid, absolute stitches 😂😂😂
It has been in my brain for over 30 yrs, and still makes me giggle 😬👍🏻
This isn't really a spy movie spoof. It is a send up of a lot of different genres. One of the biggest things it is making fun of are Elvis Presley films.
It's basically Elvis Presley in a World War 2 espionage film.
The funniest part was they released the soundtrack as if it was a tie-in by Nick Rivers
Here's the gag no one notices. Choclate Moose was played by Eddie Tagoe. He also happened to do another movie which had premiered before this one called "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where he played a member of the pirate crew who got Indy out of Egypt. He's wearing the EXACT same costume he wore in Raiders! It's the in-joke NO ONE EVER NOTICES!
Fun fact they made a full plaster case of Peter Cushing's face for the magnifying glass gag. That plaster cast was still around and was scanned into a computer to help cgi his Star Wars character Grand Moff Tarkin into Rogue One.
Great reaction. I grew up in the 80s watching this movie and it's been on of my favorite goofy comedies of all time. The cow was definitely the best.
Montgomery Ward was the OG Sears catalogue. And the joke about Pintos was that their gas tank was located in the rear of the car, which caused explosions when they were rear ended. It's why you haven't seen one in 30 years, outside of a car collection.
There’s 5 scenes that l can’t help but laugh at.
1 when Nick wakes up from the beating and is relived his not in school.
2 is the guy running after the tree.
3 is the cows coming through the binoculars.
4 the calf sucking on Nigel.
5 and when chocolate moose throws the graperling hook into déjà vu’s back.
My all time favourite comedy film! It starts funny as hell, but when Nick meets the resistence, it goes to a whole new level of funny. And I was on holiday at the same beach at the same time they came to film the beach scenes. It's located at Holywell Bay, Cornwall. I can even see exactly the location in the dunes I was hiding to watch it being filmed. The beach hut was the life guard hut redressed and all the palm trees were fake.
One of my favorite gags is the bike messenger at the beginning took his helmet off and the helmet strap was still on his chin. It’s a movie that you really have to watch a couple of times to catch some of the less obvious gags. It’s one of my favorites for that reason. Watch the credits. There are a few gags in there as well. Also I recommend Kentucky Fried Movie. It’s a collection of comedy sketches that the Zucker Abrahams Zucker team wrote, and John Landis directed.
went to see this with a group of friends from high school when it premiered, great laughs, great memory.
Dear God I feel super old that they didn't know what Montgomery Wards was, I mean they kind of guessed it but still and yes it was like Sears store selling clothing, furniture, appliances, and electronics.
You need to watch Real Genius. Val Kilmer is great in it.
Fun action comedy spy film, that pokes fun at the genre as well as other films like The Great Escape, Bridge On The River Kwai, Lawrence Of Arabia, The Longest Day, Gone With The Wind, Doctor Zhivago, and many, many others.
what a lovely dancers you are! bravo!
What a great singer Val is, no wonder he was cast as Jim Morrison! The actor you refer to is Omar Shariff and he's actually in The Pink Panther Strikes Again.
The three backup singers were the Zuckers and Abrahams
There were two jokes in Nick's life story that were told so matter-of-factly you can almost miss them: "One February they got pretty jammed up during the semi-annual Lincoln's Birthday sale and they asked me to help out in pre-teen maternity".
Cheers, I've missed them forever
If you guys want the best Val Kilmer movie you should watch “Real Genius”. Such a hilarious movie!
And with this, you guys have officially become my favorite Reactors!
I remember seeing this in the theatre with my family on vacation, many years ago. Seeing the ballet scene with my Mom and sister present, was one of the most embarassing moments of my life. Still a hilarious movie, though.
"Daisy nailed it"...strictly speaking the bull nailed it
Your dancing in this vid (both of you!) made this such a fun watch!
This is one of my favorite films.
Pintos used to have their gas tanks near the back bumper.
Double thumbs up for the end of the video, showing me that I am not nearly the worst dancer out there. ;)
Loved this one since I was a kid, fav bits were always the bookshop, little horse and farmhouse shoot out but soo many funny bits, just a great chill out movie.
One of my favorite movie lines of all time is "Wow, they'd have enough salt to last forever!".
,, "people change, hairstyles change,, interest rates fluctuate!" 😲🤭😳
Another Val Kilmer move you should watch is Willow.
I think my favorite gag was either the under water bar fight, or the simple little joke about the boots while val kilmer was sneaking around lol.
No fucking way!! NO FUCKING WAY!! You decided to react to my #1 favorite comedy of ALL TIME???? God, I love you guys so much......
Crazy, Stupid Love next then? lol
It´s my #2. Have you seen Superbad yet? My #3!......

We had an '81 Pinto when I was a kid and I sat backseat in the middle with my feet on the hump, like the third Cylon.
Totally forgot about that gag in this movie. Pretty sure there was bumper sticker that said "BACK OFF, I have a full tank!"
Daisy should have won an Oscar. I've never forgiven the Acadamy for that oversight.
Who hasn't had that dream? Where you're running through the school and can't find or remember the room you were supposed to be in? Or not finding your locker, and once you do can't remember the combination to get your books?
