  • American Couple Reacts: Chatsworth House Tour! England's Grand House & Estate! FIRST TIME REACTION! We have seen some incredible houses in the United Kingdom. Is Chatsworth House in Derbyshire the finest of them all? Chosen several times as Britain's favorite country house, it is a Grade I listed property from the 17th century, altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. Chatsworth House is a stately home in the Derbyshire Dales, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north-east of Bakewell and 9 miles (14 km) west of Chesterfield, England. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, it has belonged to the Cavendish family since 1549. It stands on the east bank of the River Derwent, across from hills between the Derwent and Wye valleys, amid parkland backed by wooded hills that rise to heather moorland. The house holds major collections of paintings, furniture, Old Master drawings, neoclassical sculptures and books. Join us as we take a look at this incredible house, grounds and surrounding area! I am from NZ, currently live in England (Salford) Chatsworth was the first stately home I ever visited and even walking through the grounds you can feel the effect of centuries of planned landscaping and gardening. Inside was literally mindblowing. I was vey quickly overwhelmed by the amount of historical detritus collected by a family who has lived here for centuries. On back staircase, dimly lit by a bare bulb, I found a 500 year old Tintoretto painting - not behind glass or velvet rope. There were hundreds of visitors but it was so big I was alone most of the time. At one point I sat down in an empty corridor to rest. It was only after i got up that I realised I had been sitting on King George IIIs coronation throne. (Why was it here?) Oh, this bedroom was where the Duke of. Wellington slept? Oh, this is a 5000 year old Egyptian memory stele? Coming from a country where the very oldest buildings were barely 150 years old, Chatsworth was like a dream.

Michael Nolan. The coronation THRONE would not be at Chatsworth. It is very ancient and use only for the actual crowning of the monarch. It is more likely to be another chair used at George III’s Coronation…

I think that was pretty much everyone's weekend, of my generation, visit Matlock Bath, Bakewell and then have a picnic in Chatsworth Park, at the side of the river Derwent (where they tested the 'bouncing bomb' at the Derwent dam, for the attack on the dams of the Ruhr). I did it with my kids too, and can't wait to do it with my Granddaughter as.

Its actually lovely to see our Stately Homes and villages through fresh eyes. When I was a child, we visited all the local stately homes with the school on Environmental Studies, which in turn led to me visiting as many as I could, introducing my children to them as a parent. Wherever I go in the country, I try to visit a fresh place. The villages are different because we see them all the time, either driving through or small villages becoming incorporated into towns and cities, although they still keep their charm. Lovely video yet again ladies, thank you 😊

When I lived in Sheffield, Chatsworth was just a short drive away and I always found it to be a popular place for a visit during the warm months. Local people appreciate the opportunity to eat a picnic on the giant lawns and don't abuse the Duke's and Duchess's hospitality by leaving litter. Farm animals wander around the estate, checking out the visitors and posing for pictures, and there is a herd of deer running around the estate too. Of course the house itself is spectacular as this video shows.

I once took my mum to Chatsworth, while we were walking round the gardens she told me to watch for someone coming and then proceeded to bend down and steal some seed pods from a pretty flowering plant in the border.😂 When I told her off she said "if the Duke wants to come and steal some of the seed pods from my garden he's more than welcome. 😂 Every spring she would nudge me and tell me her Chatsworth plant was flowering.
The house is truly stunning up close, and I really do hope you both get to visit one day.

We still visit Chatsworth most years, they have a wonderful country fair, ( the terrier racing is something else) and the Christmas decorations are superb. All their events are so well organised. The estate also have a farm shop which stocks the highest quality local produce. Another Derbyshire house nearby is Haddon Hall, the most perfectly preserved example of a manor house from the middle ages, helped by being unoccupied for 200 years.

This is besides the castles, churches, monastic ruins everywhere. We are so blessed. Such places are regularly busy with visitors, whenever they are open. At the moment Castle Howard, & others are beginning their Christmas 🎄 displays, which are always spectacular.

In the early 80’s 4 of us were walking in the grounds and we came across 2 ladies with dogs we stopped to pass the time of day, imagine our surprise to realise it was the Duchess of Devonshire (Debo one of the Mitford girls) and the Queen, we were blown away, the Queen used to visit occasionally. I went here years ago, when I was 15. The year prior a bunch of us students from England had a school exchange to the states, and on this particular year, it was the American students turn to stay with us in our country. One of the arranged trips that our school had planned was to take us to Chatsworth, to show the Americans a “typical English country manor” type house. It was the first and only time I’ve been personally too. The American students were all commenting on how grand it was and how “English” it was etc. but then that all soon changed to typical 15/16 yr old talk when we went from room to room. We would fight (only in banter) about which bedroom would be ours. Which room would be best to have a big party in, even down to imagining where the DJ booth would be placed etc! But although we had wild, teenage imaginations, it didn’t take away from the fact of how impressive the house is. It’s stunning. And a lot of the American students said that out of all the trips we went on, Chatsworth was their favourite place they had visited

My dad was a semi-professional kids entertainer and did the Chatsworth House staff Christmas Party for years. Up to the age of about 10, I was his "stooge" and remember a few great Christmas days there. I know I met the Duke and Duchess (they gave me a present even though Dad did not work for them) but I do not really remember them. My dad said they were lovely, down to earth people with no poncy airs and graces. I live about 20 miles from Chatsworth and spend some happy summers days walking round the grounds and house in my own little "Christmas Party" dream world remembering my dad and the fun we had in that great house. Allegedly, the present Duchess spends a lot of time in the gardens "pottering about", I wonder how many of us have had a pleasant chat with a female gardener without realising we were actually talking to Her Grace!!!

The other wonderful thing about Britain's stately homes is that apart from being open for visitors, they also stage all sorts of outdoor public events, especially during the summer. It is so special to visit on a long summer evening with a picnic and watch a concert. Close to us is Berkeley Castle, one of the oldest continually inhabited castles in the country. We saw a play of Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in the wooded moat, on the 420'th anniversary of the play's creation. We only found out afterwards that in fact the play had been written especially for the wedding of one of the Berkeley family, and was first shown in the exact spot where we saw it 420 years later. Pretty cool.

I was around 7 or 8 years old at the time and fell in love with Chatsworth and remember clearly the step fountain and all the beautiful grounds as well as the house. I've still got my black and white photos I took of the day some 50 years ago, including a horse and it's foal that were grazing in the grounds. I am surprised she didn't show the Violin and Bow painting which is known as a Trompe l'oeil, an illusion created to make the violin look like it is hanging from the door that was painted around 1723. It took me a few years or more before I returned to visit Chatsworth and was still as in love with the place. If you ever get the chance to go Natasha and Debbie please go, it truly is a beautiful place to visit and explore.

Here's a funny tale about my first visit to Chatsworth House: As an autistic child, my grasp of language was worse back then. In about 1971, my parents told us we were going to visit a stately home (the general term for houses like this that are open to the public). In my ten-year-old, autistic mind, I got this mixed up with 'old people's home'. It didn't help that I had recently visited elderly relatives in a place with 'House' in its title. So I thought to myself, 'Why are they making such a big deal about visiting an old people's home?' Are we going to be walking around just looking at old people?' Needless to say, when we got there, my mind was blown away by what Chatsworth House actually turned out to be

Hi Natasha & Debbie just watched your reaction to Chatsworth house which my wife and I visited for the first time in August and as you surmise it blows you away, and yes it dose have winter activities including a light walk in the garden. Also while on holiday in Cambridge this year we visited the only American war cemetery in the UK, worth checking out. It has final resting place of over 3000 American heroes and a memorial wall with the names of over 2000 missing in action personnel including great band leader Glen Miller.
P.S. love the show and am subscribed, also one for you Debbie I am ex R.A.F. having served 22 years, going back to your Red Flag video I was at 4 red flags as ground crew between 1992 & 2000. Keep up the great videos.

I have visited Chatsworth a couple of times. Its around 2 hours from me. Last time we went, my Mum spoke to a guy who was looking after one of the Dining rooms and she commented how lucky he was to work there,, He said he had been there over 25 years and still hasn't seen every room. It really is as spectacular as it looks.

Natasha, a lamb called Shawn Chatsworth says 'Hello'. You guys would love it. Chatsworth has a shout for being the most beautiful stately home in England, it really is shockingly sublime in person. I used to ride there from Manchester often, stopping at nearby Eyam for breakfast, where the little cafe used to make the best lemon meringue pie in the world. Derbyshire is a very beautiful county and I'd recommend checking out more Derbyshire based videos. There are many fabulous places for walks, like Dove Dale, and houses like Haddon Hall, that are steeped in history, and ancient sites like the haunted stone circle at Arbor Low. Chatsworth is wonderful for art lovers and the gardens with maze and water features are stunning.

When my kids were small we were having a picnic at the side of the Cascade when an older gentleman wearing Speedos walked up the steps of the Cascade. He got to the top and sat down in the pool, causing some muttering as kids were playing there. Whispers abounded til we heard the kids were OK, the late Duke was just escaping the hot weather and wanted to play with the families enjoying his property.
You guys need to visit/stay in Derbyshire and go to the Blue John mines which aren't too far from Chatsworth which has some beautiful vases and ornaments made from this rare form of fluorite. There are loads of shops in the neighbouring villages which sell Blue John in jewellery and maybe some small ornaments but it's not cheap.
Love these vids highlighting our glorious landscapes and estates, houses etc.

The 40 hours in clearing the table is, like Buckingham Palace & Windsor Castle, all about polishing the gold (in the Royal case) & silver condiment pieces , candelabras etc & putting them into storage vaults so that they're still undamaged when next. used. This will involve a number of staff . Same thing happens at Alnwick Castle, homes of the most senior Dukedom (Dukes of Northumberland, the Percy's) .
They live a different type of life to all of us 😂

Since retiring I’ve been volunteering, first at Hardwick Hall the home of Bess of Hardwick who built Chatsworth. Now I’m volunteering at Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster and about to start at Wentworth Woodhouse Rotherham. I speak to visitors and present the history and provide security against people who may damage or steal (but nothing like this has ever happened whilst I’ve been on duty). These properties keep bored retired people like me active and socialising with other volunteers. English Heritage and The National Trust provide us with a comfy room with tea and coffee etc. To sit and chat with friends during break times keeps us old people sane. Then we get to care for some amazing antiques.

I live in the Derbyshire Village of Barlborough some 30 minutes away from Chatsworth. My next door neighbour works there during the tourist season. The City of Sheffield and the Market Towns , Chesterfield to the East, Bakewell immediately to the south and another 5 miles or so to Matlock and the Heights of Abraham. Just a short jog to the West is the village of Castleton with its unique Blue John stones. Eyam the plague village is also very close.
This area makes a great base for an English Holiday.

I love visiting Chatsworth gardens, which you can do separately from the house. I find there's too much to see for house and gardens in one day.
There is often amazing sculpture exhibitions in the gardens.
I find the house over ostentatious with oppressive dark panelling, but it is stunning too.
The Veiled Vestal Virgin sculpture is the most beautiful marble work of art I've ever seen.
It costs around £35 a ticket for gardens and house.

9 minutes and 20 seconds into this reaction video look through the open door and you can see a violin hanging on the back of another door. This violin and door looks real but it is in fact painted on the wall in the room next door, just another example of the quality of the artwork at Chatsworth.
When you visit England this is THE stately home to visit. It is as described "the finest country house in England" closely followed by Blenhiem Palace home of the dukes of Marlbourough (Winston Chuchill's family).
Sir Winston is laid to rest in the local village churchyard at Bladon.

Another little interesting thing about Chatsworth, the last duke had all the exterior window frames gold leafed as it lasts longer than paint. The Keira knightly film was my least favourite interpretation of Pride and Prejudice. The last two bbc versions are superb and much nearer the novel.

I love about an hour from Chatsworth, as I child we lived closer. It was one of my mum favourite places and is one of mine.. My ex hubby's cousin was head chef for the Duke and Duchess in the 90's, allowing us a chance to visit the staff lodgings in the house.
Simply to drive through the Estate is stunning but my favourite time ti visit is coming up. Next week we visit for the first of a 4 week outdoor Chatsworth Christmas market. A few yrs ago and 2 days after mum died, my family scooped me up and took me to the Chatsworth Christmas market.
A bitter sweet day because it seemed like we could feel her.
Chatsworth means a great deal to many.
Only 4 or so moles away is the most stunning house called Hadden Hall. Which is highly recommended. Hadden Hall is older than Chatsworth and used in many movies. The Princess Bride was filmed there.
The 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice is by far the best version,.I hope you manage to see it.

I live 10 mins from Chatsworth, me and my family visit the house and gardens a number of times a year, it's a very calming and relaxing place, there is also a farmyard and some excellent walks.
The outside water fountain is actually gravity fed from what I remember 2 lakes at the top. When I was a kid I actually went inside the hunting tower, the views were amazing. Chatsworth also host the International Horse Trials and stage the Chatsworth Country Fair. They also host a fireworks display which are really good. Also the house is decorated with a theme each Christmas, they are planning 3 years in advance and they don't tell you the theme till nearer the time.

Great to see you enjoy Chatsworth where my sister works. A must read is the story of the late Dowager Duchess, Deborah Mitford, one of the "Mitford girls". As a child I remember sitting with her on a bale of straw watching a pony show, and my family would visit the gardens where she would be out with a basket collecting some eggs.
You may have spotted the gilt paint in the window frames which gives the Windows a golden glow in the afternoons. What was missing from the video was the Emperor Fountain which at one-time reached 300 feet and is gravity powered, a marvel of engineering. The Chatsworth Calendar is full of amazing events including the international horse trials, Country Fair, Royal Horticultural Society Flower show, Christmas Market and especially when the houses length see the Christmas decorations. The treasures throughout the house are breathtaking.

To all the stately homes and gardens, museums, places of interest and historic significance. I stopped at about 15 years old. Now 48 years old. I do go to all the places I once visited I pick a couple to visit each year. As I'm now disabled it takes alot more out of me and preparation. I do live in a town that has alot of history Northampton and do travel my county every year through out the year on my good days. I value the history of my whole country so try to visit these places as often as possible.

Chatsworth is probably the finest Stately home Ive seen internally and I've been to a lot. Externally I think there are several more picturesque in the UK , but like the interior, it's grounds are possibly the finest.
The village houses are very typical of hundreds of small villages all over England. You can just drive from village to village and your jaw would drop at so many of them. Derbyshire , Yorkshire and Lancashire certainly have their fair share.

I cant remember how many times I've visited Chatsworth, it's not very far away from me and I quite often go to Bakewell and call at the Chatsworth farm shop where they have really fresh produce and treats, bit pricey but worth it. I've been several times at Christmas when the house is decorated and it's absolutely amazing. The Chatsworth villages surrounding the house are also well worth a visit Natasha will definitely want to live there 😂. When you come on your visit you will need a week in Derbyshire to see everything and you can't go there without popping over the border into Cheshire and visit Little Moreton Hall (check it out) I think it is the only example of a complete Elizabethan manor house in the UK and it's just down the road from me as well as Gawsworth Hall which is the home of Mary Fitton who was associated with William Shakespeare and was reputed to be the dark lady in his sonnet.

I and my partner visited Chatsworth last year on the eay back from a holiday in Yorkshire. It is impressive, beautiful and stunning from a distance. The interior is amazing and the painted ceilings are beautiful. Even the grounds are beautiful and all set against the hills of the Peak District. The waterfall and lake is situated in such a way, that it looks like the house is floating above the lake. We are so blessed in the UK and especially England, with all these beautiful buildings and the history thst goes with it. We really do not at times appreciate what we have abd and sometimes become quite complacement about our history. We are truly lucky.

I'm old now - very old. My ex-wife's family were all deep Derbyshire and hailed from Bakewell. I spent hours walking through Chatsworth Park - it may look calm and green, but it's a good hike. The Farm and farm shop are always crowded and in the spring, summer and autumn Chatsworth is heaving - current estimates say more than 600,000 people visit Chatsworth each year. If you stay in or around Bakewell (itself a popular day trip - it's sort of equidistant from Manchester and Sheffield,) also visit Hadden Hall - it is early Tudor - 100 plus years older than Chatsworth. There is a great deal of British history centred on Derbyshire - it was 'the cradle of the industrial revolution'.

I live in the centre of Sheffield which is about 20 minutes by car from the Chatsworth Estate and Chatsworth House. Every year the House is decorated for Christmas, there are some videos of Christmas at Chatsworth which are definitely worth watching.
The Estate as it is today is in a very large part due to the hard work and insightfulness of the late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire who sadly passed in 2014 at the age of 94 with every member of the Estate and wider community feeling her passing almost as a personal loss.
Deborah Miford who was to become the Duchess and later the Dowager Duchess was the youngest of the six Mitford sisters who fascinated and scandalised society in the 1930's.

I grew up a few miles from Chatsworth and spent many a Sunday in the grounds. My parents knew people who worked there. The house was recently restored a few years ago at a cost of £33 million. This included replacing the gold leaf on all the windows. One of its most famous features is a trompe l'oeil painting of a violin and bow on a door. You might have noticed in the same shade of blue being used on doors, etc., in Edensor and Beeley. This is called Chatsworth Blue and denotes the property is part of the estate.
