  • The hunt for Fujifilm's best wide-angle lens.
    Samyang, Rokinon, Bower reading online it seems like all three of these companies have the exact same lens from the same company but with a different name badge put on it for different parts of the world.
    I'm not sure if that is true or not but in this video, I am reviewing the Samyang 12mm f2 NCS CS lens for the Fuji x-mount.
    how good is it for landscape photography, what are its pros and cons, and how well does it work for astrophotography.

    Great review as always. I own the lens and love it for astro (you've now quantified that feeling!). I've tried as an out & about lens as well, but can't live without AF in all but the most specific applications. Following your review of your 10-24 I picked that up for my go to wide angle.

    Excellent video again. Subscribing! Great to learn that this lens is sharper or as sharp as those lenses that I can't even think of purchasing. It's a great relief! Wish it had some sort of weather sealing. The condensation tendency in where I live is quite high too.

    I bought this lens several years ago and it works well for Milky Way photography with a single image.
    When I tried it in a camera tripod and took a series of images for stacking, on looking at the stacked image there were lines joining the stars that were towards the edge of the image. I put this down to it having quite a bit of barrel distortion. I heard that if you put it on a tracking mount the stacking can work.

    Thanks for pointing me to your review! This was a great review, and I really appreciate your details, and your astrophotography scoring is a HUGE help! I'm very torn between this Samyang/Rokinon, the new TTartisan 10mm f2, and the Fuji 16mm F1.4. Definitely seems like the Fuji is the best, and probably the most all-around useful given the autofocus - but it's also 3-4 times the price of these other lenses. I'd be very interested in your review of the TTartisan if you ever do that. Thank you!

    yeah, the lens from Bower, Rokinon and Samyang are identical; I have a Samyang version ( which you can by in NZ ) but have previously owned the Rokinon version and they are identical ( I compared my Rokinon version to a Samyang that my wife owned ). It makes a great wide travel lens.
    I never refer to my wide angle lenses ( Samyang 12mm and Loawa 9mm ) as 'manual focus' but I call them my 'never focus' lenses; f8 and set to infinity and it is all sharp. It would be interesting to do a video on the 'hyperfocal' performance of lenses as they get wider to see just what the differences are, and at what focal length the focus isn't an issue for landscape work.

    Really good review Tom but how would you go about getting a 'good copy' I see so many people have poor copies is there anything you can do to prove its a good copy before you buy especially online. Now a new subscriber to your channel cheers Carl.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 3 lety +2

      My best guess would be to buy on a crazy cheap sale, so if you are unhappy with the results you can sell it "pretty much new in box" without losing money.
      Or, simply ask the online store first, express your concerns about inconsistency and quality control, and see how the store replies and what their return policy is.
      It may cost you return shipping, but in online world where their response is written and can be publicly shared, having a considerate way of dealing with poor quality products is a must.
      You just need to also be very kind with packaging and understand that return shipping / time to process things is something that can take a while and shouldn't be up to them to cover.
      And proving that your copy isn't "sharp enough" might be tricky to do, without some form of test and comparative example.
      Out of curiosity how do you think you would decide if the lens was not sharp enough vs not as sharp as you're expecting, but sharp enough for samyangs standards?
      (I still work I'm camera retail and love to find loop wholes in systems to get customers the best results possible, specially with a inconsistent product)

    Good evening Thimas, if possible I ask for your opinion on the astrophotography lens on the XT-5 to be combined with the 16 1.4. I started with Milky Way last spring and I'm becoming more and more passionate about it. I feel the need for a wider field of vision. Therefore, I ask you for your opinion between the Samyang 12 f2 MF and the Viltrox 13 f1.4. Or, if you have had the opportunity to test other lenses wider than f. 16, I would be very happy to receive your advice. Weight and size are not a problem, I put quality first. Thank you for your time.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 5 měsíci

      Of those two I would choose the viltrox very comfortably.
      BUT be aware I have seen a LOT of production inconsistency from those two brands. There is a good chance the lens you get might be soft or flawed.
      If you can find a way to test this your self and a place to buy from that will let you swap etc that would be great, otherwise it’s just a bit of a gamble.
      Compared to Fujifilm lens are far more consistent.

It's a very nice lens but my copy moves in the lens mount, which may not matter for astro but is annoying when you're walking around and composing through the viewfinder. Some googling, others have had this issue but I don't know how common it is; someone put some gaffer tape over the cuff to tighten it up but that solution bothers me because you're creating a gap for dust to enter.

    This makes my deciding between the 12mm vs 10-24mm harder, I do have already the 16mm 1,4 and 16-80 f4 but need something for interior photography, should I go for this lens or 10-24 or Laowa 9mm? Thanks

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 3 lety +1

      I haven't used the 9mm but did real estate work for years constantly taking magazine cover photos with the 10-24 so I would highly recommend it for that kind of work

      @@ThomasBusbyPhotography yeah, only it is much more expensive and not great in your tests. Even worse sharpness than this 12mm.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 3 lety

      One thing my testing didn't reveal was the 12mm production inconsistency, the 12mm lens I tested and the 12mm lens I brought were very different.
      The one I brought was still very sharp, but had soft areas.
      And while the 10-24 isn't the sharpest of wide angle lenses it is still sharper than needed for most of the real estate work I did.
      Is any of your real estate work going to be printed or just digital, and if it is going to be printed for what purpose?

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 3 lety +1

      I personally would spend the extra, and even after a year you decide it's not for you, just look after it, lenses hold their value much better than bodies do.

    Hello, I sold my Samyang 12mm manual and I hesitated a lot for the new 12mm AF and the Viltrox 13MM 1.4 which has very good reviews.
    Have you already had the opportunity to try the Vitrox 13mm Milky Way please? My purchase is intended only for this use where my old Samyang did not do too badly.
    I was able to acquire the 13mm at a great price but I would not have the opportunity to try it in astro for several months.
    Thank you so much.

      Some tests in France even consider Viltrox to be the best option in astro on Fuji.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  Před 6 měsíci

      The viltrox 13mm is outstanding, BUT all third party lenses have issues with build quality consistency, so while I’ve seen amazing results, I also know people with ones that are rubbish, find a way to test your lens and only buy from somewhere you can return it asap if it’s not up to scratch.
      You don’t get this issues with Fuji sigma or tamron

    Doesn’t the 16 1.4 have lots of coma when shooting Astro? At least it did in my experience.... but I notice that you stop down to F2, which may clear that up 🤷🏽‍♂️

      zeiss touit 12mm is a terrible lens for astro. electronic manual focus...horrible. and once you find the sweet spot for focus, and you review your shot, the very next shot is out of focus again. some sort of focus shift happens when you do that. but as a general lens it’s great. just not for astro.

      @@arielestulin9706 I can confirm the horrible manual on the fly focus, but not the changing of focus after the review. Do you have the latest firmware for the camera and lens combination you use? Otherwise, I find that the Zeiss has less coma than the Fuji 14, has better flare resistance than the Samyang 12 and once you manage to nail the focus it quite good for astro. But this nailing is a challenge ...
