    If I found a caution tape while digging I'd have to keep digging to find out what I need to be cautious of

    In the UK we would put electric cable in conduit before burying it in the garden ....

    • @gabrielkimbrough
      @gabrielkimbrough Před 4 lety +1

      That's standard US too, but he mentioned he's using "direct burial" wire. Not sure I'd trust it though, I was thinking I'd use direct burial wire and still put it in conduit to be extra precautious.

    Not familiar with the NEC, but if this were Canada, the wire would need to be a minimum of 24" deep, or 18" if in PVC.

    Anyone got a link to a better video... can I connect a pond pump to an outside light?

  • @hyflyin1
    @hyflyin1 Před 8 lety +6

    12" depth is sufficient according to the NEC if you meet 2 criteria.... you have GFI circuit breakers before you exit the home, the circuits are 20 AMP max, and you use UF-B wire rated for direct burial. No conduit or duct is required.

      What if someone completely forgot there was wire, or a kid decided to go plant something in the garden... and they put the shovel to the ground, and stand on it, shoving it a foot
      down before they see the yellow tape (or they have no clue what the tape is even for)? To me that's a scary scenario with live wire under the ground.

  • @19993gt

    Howdy George!

  • @EzekielsCall
    @EzekielsCall Před rokem

    Even with that tape .. you're not going to want to leave the tape exposed, because that defeats the whole purpose of creating a beautiful space for people to enjoy.
    So that means they potentially could dig too deep before they even see the tape... just one foot on the shovel to a decent depth before they see the tape would be
    one foot too much. Maybe a better idea would be to put flagstones over the trenched area or something? Or a bench? An area which will not
    be used for planting any flowers, so no one would be digging in that spot to begin with? Or as many have said, put the wire inside conduit under the ground and
    bury it deeper.

    but once you hit the caution yellow tape then your most certainly going to hit the live wire

    • @willengram7091
      @willengram7091 Před 3 lety +1

      He didn’t say but the tape doesn’t go directly on top of the cable. Should be like 6” above it so you know to slow down when you see it.

  • @comicsgod53
    @comicsgod53 Před 5 lety +3

    Looks like the absolute minimum depth with no protection like conduit pipe.I trenched 24" just to be on the safe side so my tiller can't reach it.

    • @gabrielkimbrough

    electrical wire needs to be inside of PVC conduit buried at least 18 inches deep

    • @willengram7091
      @willengram7091 Před 3 lety

      Direct burial cable means it’s UL listed to be buried directly in the dirt. It doesn’t NEED to be in pvc. It SHOULD be in pvc.

    By the time they’ve hit the caution tape it is too late! This is just typical and commonly accepted substandard American construction. We desperately need higher standards in this horrible country.
