We are working hard on starting a cult in London, Ontario, Canada. London is going to be the FIRE MECCA of Canada. Our group is called London on FIRE & we have surpassed 500 members! The monthly meetups are amazing. Of course it's free to be in the club in the spirit of mustachianism :P
Someday hope to host Mr Money Mustache (Pete Adeney) himself when he makes his annual trip to hamilton, ONTARIO, CANADA. Only about 1.5 hours away. Willing to pickup, host, and drop-off back in Hamilton :)

As far as the social "costs" go, I think so much of that is in our own heads. Your friends probably couldn't even tell you what you wore to work on any given day last week. We really just think people are noticing, but they're really just as self- focused as we are.

Also, if you don't make enough conscious choices in your life or have the luxury to make those choices, many of the people you are surrounded by have values you don't share. It's much easier to find people who influence you to make smart choices once you have a certain amount of power, time, etc.

I honestly wish I discovered all of this earlier in life. I discovered it in my 30s and since then I've paid off my mortgage and become debt free, although not financially free as yet. I think it should be our duty to educate as many young people as we can to live a frugal life, instead of spending money you don't have on things you don't need to impress people you don't like.

My heart aches for founders running businesses as a cult/religion. How narrow minded to treat anyone finding utility in something you've made as a mindless follower. Even using this idea as expression shows how little one thinks on their own. To create change in some meaningful way is to empower/create space for others to think on their own, and build upon useful ideas not take any as law. To me, this is a very bad idea best not spread.

I agree... “ cult “ isn’t the right word. “ Cult “ is more than just following a set of principles, it is to worship someone/something and at that point you surrender the right of thinking by yourself in order to please your “god” and become more like “ him “ . Sounds good in theory, but it’s a very dangerous thing!
