  • Sea otters were hunted to local extinction more than 100 years ago. Their absence left a hole in Oregon Coast ecosystems that's being felt now more than ever - but one group is trying to bring them back.

It is very exciting 😄! We are eager to return these keystone species back to the kelp forest ecosystems.

These ladies are kind of silly. I surf that coast line and ive seen hundreds of these otters. Most of the time moms with 6 kids walking down the beach. Or swimming right up to me to check me out. Its always where people arent. You wont find them from the cliffs of a highway. I swear people used to be better at this kind of stuff out here.

The otters will return when Oregon enforces a ban on dogs on beaches and tide pools. Currently the otters see or even smell the remnant scent of a carnivorous predator and leave those areas. In Central California, where dogs are not allowed onto the shoreline, the otters thrive. Where dogs are plentiful on the beaches, the otters do not fulfill their ecological role. It would be nice to see the word get out on this so that people can make better decisions on where they take their dogs to curtail these kinds of negative impacts.

Thought Oregon was libertarian. Mandates and protection is very authoritarian. I'd rather have oysters, clams, scallops, crabs, and snails than these things. River otters are the missing species. Ocean otters decimate shellfish species for not much of an upside.

you know we currently have an invasive urchin problem and the only 2 species that really keep urchins in check were both until pretty recently, i mean you watched the video right? or do you just not care

@@ethernetgirl2001 yea it's pretty light on citation and research, as is typical with 99% of the "we are releasing and protecting an 'apex species'" kind of government overreacting policy but yea cool enjoy your otters and wolves I guess. At least they didn't do this with eagles and they're back flourishing and fine 🤷‍♂️
