  • Arsenal invincible Ray Parlour recalls the brilliant story of Arsene Wenger trying to stop the midfielder from over-celebrating the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph in 2002, which came directly before the Premier League-title clinching victory at Old Trafford, on this day 22 years ago.
Parlour was talking as an ambassador for NetBet Sports Betting - sport.netbet.co.uk/
    TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 Pleased Arsenal are still in the hunt for the title. They would have learnt a lot from last year. If Man City win every game and win the league, Arsenal can be proud that they challenged all the way.
1:42 Manchester United was always the first fixture we looked at. If you got four points off them you had a good chance of winning the league. Very intense games. Sir Alex and Wenger knew what was at stake.
2:41 You knew how important these games were. Wenger was very good at taking the pressure off you ahead of big games. But we knew more important these games were.
3:50 22nd anniversary of title win at Old Trafford. Best week of my life after scoring in the FA Cup final and then getting man of the match against Manchester United. Sir Alex did not want us winning the title at their home. We defended so well.
6:21 Wenger said no drinking on the plane back from Cardiff after the FA Cup final. I said I’ll be fine by Wednesday for the United game. Wenger followed me all the way down the plane and said no drinking. I ended up amongst the Arsenal fans and ended up having too many! I kept out of the way of Wenger the following day and then had more drinks that evening. By Wednesday I felt great and I played so well at Old Trafford. I got man of the match and as I went back to dressing rooms, Wenger congratulated me and said: ‘it was because I stopped you drinking that beer on the plane!’
10:10 We got back to the training ground and there was all champagne there and we all celebrated. I organised a big party in London for that night. It was fantastic to see all of the lads celebrating together.
11:14 This current Arsenal team flying… you’ve got to see what’s at stake. You can’t feel tired, you have to rest and get your head right. You’ve got to find something from somewhere. It’s such a big prize, the Premier League. It’s all about staying fit and getting your mind right for the crucial run in.

Who else can picture Wenger striding down the plane in pursuit of Ray Parlour with several bottles in his hands? 😂

One of my best memories was being in the away end at old Trafford in 2002. I did not make Anfield in 89 or Sh*te Hart lane in 04 so this was my strongest memory.

Ray's one of my all time faves. Ads, Bergs, Henry, Vieira, Sol, Keown, Dicko, Pires, Fred. And I really thought Edu was undervalued at that time.

Ray Parlour once told a story about his time at Arsenal that didn't involve alcohol. He immediately collapsed and was rushed to hospital where he was put on an IV drip of Jagermeister. His wife sat by his side holding his hand and repeating phrases such as "what you drinking Pele". Eventually he came round, legend had it that if you could get him to repeat the story at White Heart Lane Spurs would win the league.
    Guess we'll never know.

Lost all respect for Ray after his Talksport BS against Robbie...it was sickening rascist and totally stained him as person of character
