  • Most truffles are found by hunters using a trained dog. Occasionally however there are next-level dogs like Betty that go to work entirely by themselves.

Thanks James. Yes she is a rare dog. During the white truffle season she really came into her own and everyone she worked with was amazed by her detection skills and her tenacity. A tricky dog to train but well worth it.!

I have a GSP that is now retired from search & rescue. She sounds like Betty. She couldn’t wait for me to keep up with her. And if she couldn’t find the lost person where we were looking, bc they weren’t where we thought they may have been, then she would sometimes bring me turtles as well. I was like why??? She never wanted treats. Wouldn’t take them. But she would want a plain ol stick as a reward. She wouldn’t bend down to get one herself, I had to get her one to give to her and she would think it was the greatest thing ever and carry it for days!

    Hi,
I really love your videos and how you teach.
    Thanks you!
I’ve got a little trufferie in Chile, South America.
I’m dealing with some problem with a little dog that is 7 months years old. I’ve been training him, and he is doing really well on his training but when we go hunting something happens, and he can’t find truffles. However, he finds truffles that we hide. We know that there are truffles under the soil because we have an older dog that hunt a lot of them.
Not sure what to do, I’d really appreciate your help.
    Thanks

Hi Sebastian. Have you tried taking the little dog out with the older one. Let him watch the dog at work. Does the older dog dig? If so, stop him half-way and let the younger take over the digging. Having an older dog to play the role of teacher is usually the easiest way to solve this issue. And persistence.

      @sebastianvillalobos7915 Před 2 lety

Thanks for your answer. I have tried to go hunting with both of them but the younger dog wants to play with the other dog.
So they get a bit distracted.
      And yes, the older digs.
I’ll keep working, training and trying to go hunting with both of them

@@sebastianvillalobos7915 For a while now I have been trying to finish a video titled 'The Dog Teacher' which deals with this very topic. Maybe you would be interested in using your situation as a case study as part of this? If so, you can email me at julie@pelagaggia.com and we could arrange a Zoom meeting

Howdy lady, good to see you again. So first I'll talk about Boris, can't the man afford to purchase a comb? Granted our last failure of a president had the all-time worst hair style in our countries history but at least he tried ( personally I believe Trump was trying to hide his horns, but that's another story 😉). Anyway moving on. That's amazing she is working alone like that. But I agree there are problems with that also. That she is retrieving tortoises when she is having difficulty finding truffles shows how hard she wants to please you. Good dog. Hope this season is good for you. We here in the PNW are having the coldest and wettest season on record. We get no more than a day or to with out rain. It's like it's February and March. But it's June? The good news is the salmon are coming back to their rivers in great numbers. Should be some fantastic summer and fall fishing. Looking forward to filling some of my freezer s. Have a great day 🌤 😀 🧆

Hey Victor! I am constantly astounded by how many countries are fine about electing proven liars to govern us. I mean, how is that ever going to end well? As for Boris, the fairy story about him going for a morning run with his dog is the least damaging of the crap that comes out of that guy's mouth. I am well acquainted with shameless fibbers, the world of hunters- as you will know - is also full of tellers of tall tales! It's raining here to, so we aren't hunting right now. Great news about the salmon predictions though, hope you have your channel going by then ! In the meantime, have a good weekend!

@@TheRealTruffleHunters I'm glad we are on the same page as far as some politicians. The sad thing is their are good one's that do want to make the world a better place but get lost in the huge piles of crap. And we fishermen are similar to some mushroom hunters. For example if asked where our "secret " fishing hole or bait is, one should not expect the correct answer. If I ever have the pleasure of taking you and a guest fishing I'll tell you some wonderful stories. I'm sure you will have similar experience with mushroom hunters. FYI, had things been different this year I would be joining my family on a vacation to Spain this year. They all leave in a week or two. I so wanted to visit at least one Iberico pig farm. It's a bbq thing. So if you do get out here next year or the year after I can guarantee a great time fishing and eating. My bbq is absolutely wonderful ( trying not to brag but it's hard, really hard 😁😆😅🤣😂) And depending on what season your here what amazing foods are available. Not just the salmon and perhaps truffles but other in season wonders. For example have you ever had fresh Dungeness crab ? Hmmmm so good. And some of our Northwest wines are becoming very well known. Anyway I gotta go, I have work to do in the garden. Have a great day 🌤 😀.

@@victorbenner539 Sounds amazing. I have never been further west than Pittsburgh. The only time we can really travel is August in between truffle seasons. Maybe next year we might make it over there! Thanks for your very kind invite

@@TheRealTruffleHunters August is perfect. It's the beginning of the fall run. In fact what we call the " upriver brites". These are the last salmon that actually spawn in the last free flowing portion of the mighty Columbia River. These mighty fish can reach up to 50lbs. This would be a great time for crabbing and maybe getting some clams. So yuppers keep August in mind for some salmon fishing. Until then stay safe and have a great day. 🌤 🧆😁🐟🎣
