Boss Analysis # 29 - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

- The twenty-ninth episode of Boss Analysis. (and the longest to date)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is beloved by gamers across the whole, but even among those who have had their souls stolen by it and made them its slave (like yours truly) cannot deny that it's an easy one.
Alucard has so many tricks and powers up his half-vampiric sleeves, the forces of evil don't stand a chance against him. That is why many people opt to partake in a Naked Alucard Challenge.
This is where you attempt to complete the game with zero equipment and relics. (discounting when they are required to progress) It's a lot of fun and it almost feels like the game was meant to be played that way.
Today, I'm going to go through all the bosses I can with these rules in place and attempt to triumph over the nastiest adversities Alucard will encounter with only his bare fists...

I like to think that Alucard has an alarm clock next to where he sleeps, and it wakes him up every century or so. But the only thing it says on there is "Death-to-Dad o'clock" whenever Dracula resurrects.
So apparently the hardest boss battle of the Naked Alucard challenge involves a mutant hulked out Tauros, and a Zoroark that's clearly been to the gym.
And you handicap yourself by not using certain items and spells, some of which heal you.
Not to mention that you learn certain techniques that you need to get through parts of the story. In other words...
The Naked Alucard challenge turns this game into Pokemon.
This Castlevania game challenge is like punching the living hell out of everything includig pokmon
FINALLY SOMEONE BESIDES ME NOTICES HOW MUCH THE WEREWOLF LOOKS LIKE ZOROARK
Naked Alucard challenge basically turns this game into pokemon but you are only allowed to use bullet punch
some spells just easily broke the game, even on Naked Alucard mode. Tetra Spirit is bonkers for how easy you can cast it.
Creators: Should we make quality content or high quantity of content?
Git: I'm going to do both!
Alucard, please. This isn't a bar fight. Have some class.
He has more class than Trevor.
streets Of Rage oh Mean Castle of Rage
Alucard: "Yeah, I met Death. What did I do? I BEAT HIM WITH MY FISTS."
Death: SO
Beat him like he stole something, like our weapons and armor.
And thus we learned dracula sits not on a chair nor simple throne, but atop a massive mimic. He kicks back while his pet furniture provides the beatdown. Take a real good look at his 'true form', and despair how much of a couch potato he is!
“BEHOLD MY CHAIR’S TRUE FORM, AND DESPAIR!”
I've always called it his Satan Chair

It feels like the GBA and DS titles that followed this game were an ongoing effort to find a way to recreate its glory with better-balanced difficulty, re-using many of the same sprites and abilities. I'd consider the DS titles a success in that regard, though Order of Ecclesia almost swung too far in the other direction of difficulty. A naked Shanoa run would be nearly impossible.
That last sentence sounded very sus 🤨
For one, to get the true ending, you need to use Dominus.
That 1 use of Dominus is basically an interactive cutscene.
Plus, Shanoa can't even do a naked run in the first place, since she can't unequip any of her Glyphs (besides the ones on her back).
Unless you mean beating the game without armor, and sticking to the starting weapon? @@ls190v2

Fun fact: In Argentina, a long time ago there was some wrestling movie series or show i think that had an actual mummy as a character.
And, as far as i know, not someone pretending to be a mummy in-universe for whatever reason, an actual mummy from Egypt.
It’s called ARMS
They have master mummy
La momia, luchador sordo mudo!
They would be the easiest to beat. You know how frail those mummies are?

Olrox's true form reminds me of the Dame Tu Cosita alien.
Not really, when you know the pattern the Death Egg Robot is very easy not like Olrox....
Bah, nuts to that damned rare drop in the Forbidden Library! Alucard's BARE FIST is the real gamebreaker, it makes mincemeat of anything they come across! I'm gonna say this right now: Fist of Tulkus (another rare drop, same area as that gamebreaking sword) is also godlike
Yoshimi Sugai Mainly for the hadoken tech, since it’s a ranged attack that cost no MP, but it’s also the strongest fist weapon in the game.
Git. I found out some very interesting information about Live a Live. (READ WHOLE THING)
-When fighting Odio (second form), stand in the top left corner. He cannot hit you with SaintAlicia.
-In Pogo's chapter, stand next to the door when completing the caveman puzzle.
-It is possible to solo the final chapter with Pogo. It is also possible to solo with Li Kuugo.
-The Cola bottle does 999 to O-D-O, Amlucretia (it can kill him in a quickie), OdioEyes. It cannot do substantial damage to Pure Odio though.
-Stand in a corner when fighting Jackie in Masaru's chapter.
-It is possible to die fighting Oersted after killing Odio. Just stand in the corners, run around the outside, and stand in Poison fields whenever possible. Or use a Golden Robes, but I didn't get that item. I did this with Akira, but nothing happened after I died.
-Algos's Eye can petrify Straybow. Straybow can also heal on electric fields.
-Acrophobia is killable at level 12.
-The behemoth has a pattern. It is also technically impossible to run out of powerjacks.(Yes, I tried.)
-DO NOT
-In Oersted's chapter, it is possible to go through the entire chapter with only one Joshua Seed and one Naorigusa. You can also get 99 of This Thing, but once you either get Uranus/Hash (not sure which one triggers it), you can no longer get This Thing.
-In order to get arrested and progress the story in Oersted's chapter, visit the little boy's house. The flashback at Hash's Grave plays every time you visit it after Hash dies.
-Claustrophobia drops a Rock Fist.
-You can use a Demon's Cloud to kill Acrophobia. I strongly recommend against this though.
-Both of the superbosses in Oboro's chapter can be killed when Oboro is level 12/level 13. Suijin Scale is a random drop, though.
-Taro's accessory attacks are USELESS. You are so much better off Equipping cube with IQ boosting equipment.
-Parasite Sword is hilariously broken.
-Talking to Oersted after sparing him results in him offering the chance to kill him again.
-It is possible to gather all the items needed for traps in Sundown's chapter...before the third bell rings.
-After getting Akira's ultimate weapon, you can ignore Alicia and go about your merry way.
-The Naorigusa respawn still works in the final chapter.
-Poison damage decreases with HP.
I don't know if you knew this already.
I think there's more, PM me if needed.
About the ignore Alicia part.....
I do want to ignore her, i mean SHE was the one that made Oersted fall into despair in the first place
Like come wtf? He allready saved you AND YOU ARE NOT GRATEFULL ABOUT IT???
@@renokyrieliumgodofvoid8330 you got to keep in mind that. Several other factors can also play into this.
For example:
-Stockholm's syndrome.
-Emotional manipulation

Well. Honestly all I have to say: Thank you for showing the exploit to beat doppelganger 10 cause i accidently went to the boss room on 31 hp and not saving.
Gonna be honest here, I didn't know Darkwing Bat even had a proper attack before this video. Not sure if that speaks more to the game's balance or the boss itself.

As far as SOTN not being perfect goes, it is on my list of top 3 awesome games that are also miles from their potential. Diablo II and FFVII are the other 2.
SOTN should have been a multi-disk game and should have focused on making the 90% of the game you can ignore much more integral to the challenge.
You can ignore elements, status ailments, spells, virtually all consumables, sub weapons, the familiars virtually all of the equipment and win with nothing more than a bit of grinding and picking up the stuff in plain sight along the way.
SOTN would have been a far better game if the rich game play mechanics and extensive equipment list was far more required in a far larger world. The castle is fine but there should have been huge outdoor areas and multiple paths in and out of the castle.
SOTN feels like a game with 1000 great ideas in a box big enough for 20 of them.
Git is beating the shit out of the entire castle...

Do you know what's funny? when you said that you couldn't exploit Richter as Doppelganger, he said "you fool!"
That easy way to beat the Doppelganger reminds me of using Lethal Frame in the non-GBA versions of Chain of Memories.
Also for anyone curious as to who Git just"NOPE!'d over, it was Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies.
I knew it had to be Beelzebub, that guy's disgusting. He makes me think of rotting meat.
And he being gross isn't the only reason he noped that thing is gross and tough and he was doing naked run
of course he does
he IS rotting meat after all
Aberdeen Harder well that explains why he wasn't fighting back only the flies were attacking to protect their food he wanted someone to end his suffering
If Beelzebub disgusts you, hoo boy. I hope you never find out about the Forgotten One from Lament of Innocence.
Sometimes you just need to punch everything in sight.
We have good castlevania news. Rondo of Blood and this game right here are coming to the ps4. As a bundle. Yay.

"How is it that I have been so defeated?"
Even when Alucard being so strong, I have a good time with this game.
You know, you COULD make this challenge even harder because there is a sword called Tyrfing you can obtain that LOWERS your attack power BELOW your fists. Because it is dark damage as well, a fair few of the enemies are resistant to it (though on enemies immune to dark, you may require to use your fists).
It has zero power, I don't think it can even hit anything.
It actually can hit things, I found that out when I grinded to clear the game. Tyrfing does provide a heavy nerf to your attack power but it IS usable. it's also the one elemental sword that does NOT have a special attack last I checked.
The fights would drag on too long then, and if the boss has unavoidable attacks for naked Alucard, (like Shaft) it will likely be impossible.
Shaft is one of those enemies that I have been able to beat with dark element weapons. As for Shaft's unavoidable attacks, I have to say that I made sure to buy/grind for a lot of healing things. I will admit last time I did the Tyrfing run, I did allow myself the leap stone relic and ONLY the leap stone relic in some bosses to offset the difficulty spike from using Tyrfing. I'm about to actually try the same run without the leap stone (except mandatory spots) and try to full clear the game as best I can.

Local Alucard destroys everything with his BARE HANDS!!!
Demons HATE him!!!
That was an entertaining punch up! I tried this challenge in Portrait of Ruin once, but Death walled my progress to the point where I just gave up on it. Doing minuscule damage and dying in 2 hits from huge hit-boxes is not very fun. Maybe one day I'll try it here, or in another Metroid-style Castlevania...or in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, even!
Dark Souls?
Sure, why not? I think LobosJr might have done something like that...
interesting thing to point out, in the Sega Sataurn version and the PSP version (part of The Dracula X Chronicles), there is a boss fight against Maria before getting the Holy Glasses.
Good luck. You'll need it if you want to beat it on the Saturn version
You going over this game a while ago was actually what made me fall in love with the series.
Shaft: "Ugh... No!"
Alucard: "Yo"
Shaft: *Dies*
Sorry for somewhat being an a-hole, but there’s a description error. It says twenty-eighth instead of twenty-ninth.
Alright, I see you fixed it. Thank you.
That’s why I think that cursed sword lowers your attack stat so much. So that late in the game, at high level, you have a way to handicap Alucard.
54:17 *Remenbers the Chorklings video* Wait a minute, but doesn't git hate bugs... Why is he going to fight Beelze---"I don't think i'll bother with that boss at all"

To answer your question, Slogra DOES have his beak bash attack but he RARELY uses it. Maybe if he used it more he could be more of a threat rather than just standing there twiddling his thumbs.
SOTN has a few enemies that use attacks that rarely seem to pop up. Like did you know the Hippogriff can pop out eggs and release two small birds Storm Eagle style? Did you know Cave Trolls can randomly power up? Did you know Dhurons have an attack where they get hit by lightning and become faster? Some people won't be able to know because you either defeat them so quickly or they just rarely use those attacks to begin with.

Bro... my goodness, you've inspired me to do my own Videos about many stuff... Thanks for the inspiration, keep going.
I believe the developers did actually playtest this game like this to make sure that, while difficult, it wouldn’t be impossible for players who never found better equipment or anything. They wanted a game that would be enjoyable to everyone, and not have the problem of ‘oh, you don’t have this particular equipment? Better backtrack through half the game to find it so I can progress through this single section of the game’. The reason the equipment seems broken is because the game was already playable without anything, so the equipment makes it easier and more fun to people who like to mess about and destroy pretty much anything like it was nothing.

"A pain in the neck"
Did you know? The Minotaur and Werewolf are also enemies in the Touhouvania games. However because its hitboxes aren't as bs, the minotaur enemies are actually much easier there. Werewolves are still a pain (due to dishing out alot of damage pretty darn fast) but Reimu/Sakuya can just fly over them to dodge them entirely or deal with them from a distance (although that's not recommended since it'll be a waste of souls).
6:40 In my SotN playthrough, I saw Gaibon still picked Slogra up even after its spear breaks. In addition, Slogra performed a “spear” formation horizontally to dive-attack Alucard

An hour long video, this is what I like
I had NO idea that The Mummy could pull an airplane spin on you. I'm going to have to attempt a Naked Alucard challenge.
Is the boss you skipped Beelzebub?
Yeah, that was Beezlebub.
While I find naked Alucard kinda annoying, I have played with only basilard (square) and Gladius (circle) equipped. I used relics that were required at all times (bat, mist, wolf, double jump etc). That was actually fun and challenging, and not annoying like naked can be. You have decent range and also a rapid attach close up. Also basilard can be used defensively against most projectiles by holding the button.
I feel your pain on Galamoth man. I somehow managed to get him cornered in my first play through. It becomes east to beat him if he gets stuck, because you can duck and body him.
Nearly the same thing happened to me, except he did it to himself. He kept using the wand slam attack over and over, which would never hit me as long as I was ducking. It happened so fast, I didn't think anything of Galamoth at the time and thought he was just a regular boss. Boy was that a misguided thought.
One hour...i love you

About handicapping yourself, last time I played SotN, I used a hack to make the game harder. It was quite enjoyable. I think it was called HardType. I recommend for anyone interested in revisiting the game.

I don't know. This is one that I mentioned is the only one that I know of.
