- Once every few decades during our worst drought years Lake Shasta gets low enough to expose a bit of the past. In this case exposing the Shasta Railroad Train Tunnel originally built in 1884, and flooded in 1948 after the completion of Shasta Dam. The window for paddling the tunnel is a small one, as the lake drops nearly one foot per day. Our family was lucky enough to be one of the few groups who will get to experience this unique and otherworldly site. As always we are stoked you could join us for the adventure. Thanks for watching and Happy Paddlin!

I live in PA but was in CA three weeks ago. On my drive from Santa Cruz to Yosemite I saw a lake that had to be down what looked like a hundred vertical feet from it’s previous shoreline. Your drought out there is no joke!
Thanks for sharing the family paddle. What an awesome, fun paddle for the kiddos (and adults :-).
Thanks for sharing your excursion.
Wow that is really cool! Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks for allowing us to tag along. I appreciate it.
That was so cool
We are hoping to go do that Saturday.
If the lake continues to drop a foot per day it won't be too long before you can walk through the tunnel and over the trestle. Thanks for sharing a bit of history with us.
Sweet video man! What a timeless memory to share with your family too!👏
What a cool experience
Amazing!
Quite interesting paddling inside a tunnel , well in .
Amazing! What a treat to experience with your family.
Sure miss your vids at the Lodi Headwaters Kayak Store.
I miss the shop too. Some of the best years of my life.
Man I just moved to Stockton not to long ago to see somebody from lodi go to Redding and put it on the map man brings a tear to my eye ✊🏾
Pretty awesome short window of opportunity to explore it
That was awesome Dan! Thanks for sharing.
Very, very cool!
Thanks for sharing this.
Who knew?
What a great video!!! I’m so glad I got the chance to experience this tunnel with my friends!
Thanks for sharing. It was your trip that inspired me to get out there.
Crazy. 😎🤙🏼
Very cool. Awesome family adventure
Very cool! Love seeing the kids out paddling this as that would be such an opportunity that they may not get again for years. That’ll make some great memories and thanks for sharing this experience with us.
Really cool! It would be funny to play a recording of a train whistle in the tunnel..a few people might start paddling pretty fast! 😂. Thanks Dan have a great week. You have a wonderful family! 👍👌🙂
Thanks Charlie. Wouldn’t that be hilarious 😂
What an adventure!
That place is amazing!
Great find, Dan😎
Such a beautiful family, all with perfect paddling form 😃
haha teach them young. Thanks for the kind words.
That was amazing. I would be like your kids doing laps. Thanks for taking us along.
Cool video, looks like fun!
That looks like a great time. Me and the wife had seen all these features from the shore, hiking around. We will have to check it out from the water now that we have kayaks.
Do it. You’ll love it.
Very cool! There’s one of these at Lake McClure too.
Right on. Would love to see it.
Making memorys great times
Man that is cool
It is super cool to be able to do this. The low water levels along with the fires are making me very stressed about going out though. Even in Tahoe a few weeks ago the lake was very low and had a lot of algae.
Great to see the kids paddle so well but not surprising i guess with you as a dad
Teach me young. They are my paddle buddies for sure.
My friend took me boating on Lake Shasta when I visited him in Redding. Beautiful county. Must ask him if he knows the secret Train trestle since he spends so much time on that lake.
I wanted to do this when I was down there in early Aug visiting family, but the lake wasn't low enough yet.
Great video!
Can you please share the tune you used in the opening of the video? It has a great sounding mandolin being played!
Hey Dan, i know you are all about kayaking, but do you happen to know if one can now WALK through this same tunnel? I heard the water lever was low enough now... also, how do you access it?
Very cool. How long did it take to go through the tunnel?
Not long. 5 minutes.
Dan awesome channel I just discovered your channel. I’m looking into buying a 2+1 sit on top. I live in the uk and I’m struggling to find any of the brands you review. Have you ever reviewed/tried the feel free corona? I saw your comparison but just wanted to know is it a good starter kayak for me and the kids 3&5 years old. Love watching your videos it’s what I want for my family.
I have never reviewed up, but I have a fleet of 12 of them that I've been using for years in my rental fleet. They are great for families. Only thing that doesn't work is when you have a large paddler in the back and a small one up front. The way the seats are, the weight need to be within 50lbs of one another or it gets stern heavy and unstable.
@@HeadwatersKayak Thanks Dan. Really appreciate the reply. Keep up the good work. Im loving looking at some of your earlier posts! 🛶🥇
I know you may have filmed this a bit ago but is it still available now?
This was two days ago. I rushed to get it out. The level will be up at least through the weekend.
Where did you launch from, I think you said but I couldn’t hear
Sugarloaf Boat ramp
Can I get any stickers?
Come on dan now you're just showing off
Cool video, Dan! How can I contact you? Sent you an email.
