  • A beautiful film with full 4K quality drone and camera shots made on the epic Scottish Cape Wrath Trail in August 2020.
"In the summer of 2020, us three friends decided to hike the epic Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland.
The Cape Wrath Trail is a 380km long trail with 13.000m of altitude gain. It starts in Fort William and ends at Cape Wrath: Great Britain’s most north-westerly point. It passes through almost no villages and the most remote parts of Scotland. It is not an official long distance trail, not waymarked and frequently pathless forcing you to navigate cross-country through the rough, wet, bogged terrain. It is considered by many to be UK’s most difficult long distance trail due to the navigational skills needed, the extreme rough terrain and the potential harsh weather.
We set of to hike the trail in 15 days and ended up finishing it in 13.
This is our story: Among Lochs and Glens."

It's weird how when you do these things it's miserable, cold, wet, exhausting, painful etc. Then as soon as you complete it you think "That was great, I wanna do it again!'

Why can’t you? Just wear a midge net, they are only bad when putting your tent up and down and when you stop hiking otherwise you don’t notice them. Just keep your net and gloves handy put them on before you stop and your ok, they just become an annoyance not a biting annoyance, head over to the smidge website and it tells you all about them with that knowledge you can help avoid them.

Excellent video, gives a real perspective of what to expect when hiking in remote highland areas. The perfect weather to hike in Scotland for me is slightly over cast (high cloud) with a breeze and 15c, which is normal for summer. But that rain for that length of time must have been tough going, and you cannot choose the weather so you have to take what is thrown at you. Hiking in strong sun and temps over 25c is not ideal conditions in Scotland either, it is a quick way to cook and dehydrate. The ambient temperature on sunny days like that in the highlands is probably only 20 to 25 c but the strength of the sun (UV radiation) will cook you into heat stroke if you are not careful. It is a brutal environment and terrain for humans which is why no one lives there. Well done, you must have good navigation skills too.

Awesome video guys. I'd love to do this one, but certainly for now I lack the fitness and navigational skills - maybe one day. I live in Scotland so a wee tip if you're ever back is to come in May. May is cold enough that the midges haven't yet spawned, but still usually warm enough. Also there seems to be fewer ticks (and tourists) which also helps. September can also be good but I'd avoid June to August (as you now know!).
Out of interest what were you guys doing for food - it looked like you'd had one package sent ahead, is that right? I'm guessing there are no camping stores to stock up on?

      Hi Calum,
Thanks for your reply! We would definitely choose to come around May next time; A long dinstance hike in Scotland in August was a mistake we'll only make once.
For food we had 3 packages sent ahead. This was mainly due to the fact that because of COVID all the camping stores were closed, as were some small shops. It was difficult to judge from The Netherlands whether shops would be open or not; so we decided to just send three packages.

    1. did you had any difficulties finding the path during the hike? I always hear, that the navigation skills must be on point, however, with a good map and basics understanding of altitude shown on maps etc. it should be fine, right?
    2. In which time of the year did you do the trip?
    3. Which maps would you recommend for the trip?

    • @dutchtrailrunning6414
      @dutchtrailrunning6414  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey! Thanks for your reply.
The navigation question is difficult to answer. All three of us work in the Dutch Armed Forces and have thus been trained quite thoroughly in our navigation skills. We didn't experience too many problems, although I can imagine that when the weather is tough and visibility is low there are certainly stretches that can be very challenging to navigate.
We hiked in August and would definitely not recommend anyone to hike the trail during this period due to the many many midges.
We used the standard Cape Wrath Trail Harvey Maps (consisting of 2 maps), worked absolutely fine!

Visited there with the RAF in 1985, very outdoorsy pretty, bleak, no chippy, shite weather but a jewel in the crown all the same.

Hi guys. Normally I’d absolutely love this video, but I thought Bothies are only meant to be used in emergencies at the moment (since Covid).
Did you check with the Mountain Bothies Association before you set off?

leave them alone, the chance of them catching covid from abothy in the far north west is unlikely, id say they would be more likely to die from a bear or wolf
