- I arrived in the capital of Jakarta full of anticipation to explore one of the world's biggest cities. By chance, as I headed towards the National Monument (Mona), I happened to stumble upon a national military display commemorating a 78-year anniversary (Dirgahayu TNI).
Despite the uniforms and weaponry making this look like a real-life edition of Call of Duty, the atmosphere was more celebratory as I was welcomed by the friendly locals.
Amidst all the pomp and ceremony of the parade, the soldiers even broke into dance and began to perform one of the most bizarre showings of armed jollity that the world has ever seen.
As I admired their moves and indeed their colourful uniforms, I left the park and headed in search of Pasar Baru - a Dutch colonial era shopping district built to cater for European residents back in the day - to see whether I could find a traditional hat (Songkok) ahead of my visit to Istiqlal Masjid (Mosque).
And to round off the day's adventuring, I even managed to find a Dutch pancake shop in Plaza Indonesia Mall, having been on the lookout for some remaining colonial influence in the European pasar.

Just an advice, mate. Most Indonesians are poor English both listening and speaking. It's better to learn some basic Indonesian words/sentences rather than speaking English around them. Indonesian language is easy as for daily conversation, they even use slang that makes it more and more easier. This language is national language which unites every diverse indigenous ethnic groups in the entire archipelago, they all can speak it very well. More benefit on speaking Indonesian, you won't be easily taken advantage of any cheating merchant there. Another benefit, you will be easily helped by them when you're lost.

7:23 You are in Jakarta, not Bali. Most jakartan speak Indonesian, not the regional language. You can use "Terimakasih" for Thank you, all Indonesian will understand what you say. Suksma Only used with Balinese people, non-Balinese people will not understand what "Suksma" is.
Note : You can also use the words Hatur nuhun (Thank you) in West Java/Banten. And Matur Nuwun (Thank you) in Central Java, East Java and Jogjakarta. Cheers mate.

that hat isnt just "mosque hat". in indonesia its also a symbol of nationalism, popularized by the first president. if you see photos of politicians in indonesia you will see most of them are wearing that hat even if theyre not religious.

In jakarta you can say trima kasih or makasih for shorter word ,it means thank you...different word in Bali,..u ca use it in every part of Indonesia,...hundreds of local languages in Indonesia...so every Indonesian had 2 languages for minimum.
I hadnt realised the difference until you guys helped me out here in the comments! I was in Bali initially so I think that's where I picked it up before my time in Java. Indeed I will try harder when I am back in Indonesia. Thank you!

You can visit "Taman Mini Indonesia Indah" in the east of Jakarta to see all the various cultures and tribes in Indonesia, then "Kota Tua" The old city from Dutch colonial heritage, there is also PIK in the northern part of Jakarta, you can experience a city with a sea vibes like in Miami, there is beautifull Chinatown, Aloha sand beaches white, Batavia Cove, La Riviera. PIK is a new city in Jakarta was founded from reclamation

Istiqlal is more internationally influenced modern masjid.
The standard very old traditional masjids in Indonesia don't have a dome-like structure for the top. It looks more like pyramid on top of pyramid.
