Evolution of the T. rex Throughout history - 2D animation / ART-uro

  • Almost 3 weeks of work, I call it done! T. rex throughout history! And of course, I put the bit of Hakuna Matata where Simba grows up (actually, I mixed both the 1994 and 2019 versions).
This is the most complete animation I've done. Painting took about 3 days alone. Based the first 2 stages on Charles R. Knight paintings, the second is the JP rex and the last one is based off Saurian's new rex, paint inspired on Prehistoric Kingdom concepts and added my own flare based off tigers and birds of prey.
This animation is in part for a pitch I wanna do for college in a couple months of a paleodocumentary on Carnotaurus called "Toro Carnívoro". I intend for it to have 2D animation since that's the field I want to work on in the future. Hope it get's picked up!
As always, hope you like it!
I do not own the song. It belong to it's respective owners.

Actually interestingly the first depiction of a T. Rex running on two legs with the floating tail serving as a counterweight is in 1939's Fantasia by Disney. This is particularly noticeable since every other depiction in the following decades still depicted them as slowly dragging their tails underneath them. The comparative accuracy of the animators in the Rite of Spring segment may actually derive from Disney's insistence on training their illustrators through the observation of real animals in the studio. Undoutebly some animator realised that realistic motion for the T. Rex at any quick pace would be unbelievable if it had to drag a massive lump of meat behind it rather than using it for balance as other animals do. A very rare instance of art actually predating science in deduction.

Of course you see it now, you grew up seeing it.
The mark of true genius is not the one who understands something no one else does but rather that which no one has ever seen before but when described, all can understand.
That animator was likely far mire brilliant than many of the scientists of the day, he saw something obvious, and was willing to risk his career to point it out, so not just intelligent but quite brave.

you should look up the heilmann book from 1927. you have struthiomimus with modern gait, along with gorgosaurus having a raised tail. especially for struthiomimus, there was plenty of allusions to it's birdlike traits as far back as when it was originally named in 1916(ostrich mimick) still, it was only with the discovery of deinonychus in the 60s that the debate on posture really became heated.

We in fact have found just the opposite, if we're to take phylogenetic bracketing as the priority in determining integument here then the collective amount of scale impressions we have for derived tyrannosauridae indicates a predominantly if not entirely scaly animal. Most very large mammals also dont have fur like elephants and rhinos, because they would overheat. The exception is if they live in a very cold environment like Mammoths, which is why Yutyrannus was feathered because it lived in a snowy cold region, but your regular T.rex lived in hot and humid cretaceous north America, if it was covered in feathers it would have sweated to death.

Love the animation. That looks like a ton of work. The feather thing is a great example of never just assuming we all got it just because it is the popular theory of the time. People were getting flamed for daring to speak against it, and now look. Just like larger mammals aren't always completely furry (Elephant, hippo, rhino) Not every dinosaur had the giant chicken look. Science needs skeptics and people that constantly question. That's how we'll bring them back. :)
