- Just a little funny thing that happened to me awhile back. Not the best shot to begin with but I got a kick out of what happened. You know you rail fan the area to much when the crew knows your name! This was shoot on my old camera so sorry for the poor quality. Hope you enjoy!

A few years ago my dad & I were out railfanning some BNSF trains at a small station, when the switcher in the auto yard down the tracks pulled out of the yard up to the station, then stopped. My dad & I were very confused. Then, the engineer opens the door and stands in it & then my dad & I realized it was an old friend of ours who worked on the local excursion train before it was moved! He had gotten permission to pull out of the yard just to come up & say hi! It was really cool not only to have the engineer get special permission to come up & say hi but to have it be an old friend we thought we would never get to see again! I will never forget that amazing experience.
That happened to me when I was 12 years old. I used to go watch the trains all the time behind my Grandma's house and one day there was a Conrail switcher pulling box cars out of the old Windsor Canadian distillery in Carthage Ohio and the Engineer wanted to know if I wanted to ride along for a few minutes. I did and it was great!
Back in the mid 50's I used to ride the local trains every week for about 1/2 hour. One day the engineer came to the car and told my mother that the federal government had passed new rules and my train riding days were over. I was about 5 at the time. They said that the rule didn't go into effect until the 1 st of the next month and they wanted to have me ride with then for an entire day. I hardly remember much of the day but I do remember seeing the road bed of years gone by when the commuter train went from my town to the next one North. I spent the entire day with the crew.
A few years ago the crew operating the train in my town let my son and me ride in the cab about 20 miles down the line and back. The line is now closed and no trains have gone through my town in almost a year.
sorry to hear that I hate to see railroads abandoning the tracks! !!

Since I typed that they reopened 21 miles of track thru my town and then reclosed the last 10 miles of track. Also, the closed 44 miles of track further away may get pulled up.

No more circus trains... Its so sad watching these systems fall out of service. I was really happy when they brought back a light rail service to the freight line behind my home. As a kid I vividly remember seeing the Ringling Bros. train making its way from Trenton to Philadelphia or Camden. BUt it wasn't until I was an adult that I learned the truely historic nature of the line behind my home. What is now known at the River Line in Burlington County was originally a part of the Camden Amboy Line, the first passenger service in this country ever. Right behind my house. And all those years as a boy playing and hiking along those tracks, I never knew.
Around 1992 I had a freight train stop to watch me and my friends jump from the railroad trestle. We were under the bridge to wait until it passed by. Instead it stopped, the crew member on the conductors side leaned out the window yelling for us to come out. So I went to see what he wanted. He said "we want to see y'all jump!" They sat there until we were all safely off the bridge. Blew the horn, waved to us and yelled "be safe!"
You mean to tell me the conductor had the train stopped to ask if you could make him a ringtone? LOL Nice!

That happened to me YRS. ago when I was a kid. I was walking along some tracks when this train came to a slow stop. The engineer motioned me over. So I walked over kind of suprised.and even more suprised when he asked me for directions. I told him he had to turn around and go back 5 miles. He thanked me and then rolled on. 😁
What a lucky break !! "UN-real".
When adult used to ask me to do stuff. It would be "could you buy me some fries and gravy from across street". Then hand me some money and tell me i can have the change. :)
I've had engineers yell "hello", and I've had engineers flip me the bird. but I've never seen them stop the train to make small talk!

Actually I had a young nephew and me on the horseshoe curve in PA. The (helper engine) engineer stopped his locomotive while we were sitting well back from the tracks and ask us if we knew the right frequencies for the radio I was carrying. He ask how it was going, and then he moved on. Matt was thrilled to have this happen in such a busy place....Conrail at the time.
I wonder how much this extra stopping cost for his railway company in fuel and, of course, money.
I had the engineer from an Idaho northern and Pacific train stop it to ask me why I was following him.
That was funny.
Especially because I had followed the train many times prior, but I don't know maybe he was in a grumpy mood that day.

To answer the question at the start of the video, yeah, at least 5 times. Same engineer, on the former SP/PE branch in Colton California. Nice shot anyways.

Thats something you don't see every day for sure! They know me around me place but they haven't stopped...yet.

NIce! Reminds me when I was growing up along the Utica branch of the EL, only thing is, they asked if I'd like to ride along! That contined into the NYS&W days and even now at a ripe old age I still get invites! Those"old heads" taught me a lot of shit.
I've actully had this happen a few times to me before. I was just like are they stopping just for me? LOL
I would meet the night crew on the IC when they'd work the Poydras yard in New Orleans. We knew each other's names and I would have dinner with them sometimes.

We were in Ohio and I saw a wheeling lake Erie train and the engineer got out of the TRAIN and gave me a gift and it was a model freight train set

Last time I had an engineer stop and ask me something was when he wanted to know if his ditchlights would look good in the shot...

When I was in Iowa a CN local stopped and the engineer got out and talked with me for about an hour

I went out to the tracks and got let know of a ferromex sd70ace trailin 3rd on a Z-AUGSBD and i wall up the road by the tracks and the conductor comes down and ask me if i wanted these 2 bags of BNSF popcorn they give them out at the depot neither the conductor or engineer likes popcorn so ive got 2 bags of BNSF popcorn

I was at an antique store in Canton, Indiana a few months ago and there was a guy in there talking about railroading, can't remember his name :( but he worked on the Madison Port Authority railroad and before that worked for the LIRC and claimed he was the one responsible for the decision to have their locomotives painted in the P.R.R. heritage scheme. I thought that was so cool.
