    Thank you for this topic!
I’ve never understood what went first, now I understand the why- the reason they need to go in that order.
I agree that the sooner you can begin proper skin care, the better it is. I’m 58 and I don’t have any real issues with my skin, except you can see all the damage that has been done to it. So I’m on this skin care journey and you helped me understand so much more.

I think the one thing that is important is that there are some things that dermatologists agree on (things like no fragrance & no alcohol in products), there are some things that dermatologists have different opinions. I am following dr Dray on CZcams and she insists we need a very simple skincare routine. Herself is only have a 2 steps routine and does not wash her face in the morning. She is not using face sprays (she calls them perfume in a bottle), serums or Vitamin C. I tried her routine and my skin is SO MUCH better. Previously I thought that the dryness is due to aging, but indeed I think I had contact dermatitis from all the products that I used to pile on my face. I am still intrigued by all the products that come to the market, but I stop myself buying them because I know that my face is now in a better state that it's been for years. Sunscreen & prescription tretinoin is the magic due for me, combined with hyarunic acid (no facial mist though, only water!), a simple cream with no fragrance or alcohol and loads of sunscreen. I do Vitamin C when I do my dermarolling but not every day. I am using up my BHA serum but once finished, I won't repurchase it because the tretinoin should be enough for me.
Unfortunately loads of "skincare specialists" are encouraging us to use a lot of products, but I think it doesn't work for all of us.

Hyaluronic acid will be virtually ineffective if it is applied to dry skin in a dry environment.
HA absorbs water from the surface of your skin or in the air, and when the HA is absorbed into the skin it takes the water with it, hydrating the skin.
Osmosis is the movement of water and will always travel from a high concentration to a low concentration.
So if the air around you is dry and not humid then the water will evaporate out of your skin. This is called transepidermal water loss which is further induced when the skin barrier is damaged from over-cleansing or over-exfoliating.
Therefore, once HA has been applied to damp skin, it needs to be sealed/locked in with a thick occlusive that is fatty/lipidic such as shea butter or an oil. If you neglect to do this step then applying the HA would be futile and if the air around you is dry (such as in the winter) then it will dehydrate your skin even more as the water will evaporate from the skin and into the air.
Furthermore, different size molecules of HA will penetrate to different layers of the skin. Large molecules will stay near the surface and small molecules will penetrate to deeper layers. You need to find a product with a mixture of sizes in order to hydrate all layers.
My simple routine in the morning is to splash face with cool water and pat dry. Apply a Vitamin C - I also like the Garden of Wisdom ones. And then an SPF 50 - I like La Roche Posay Shaka Fluid sunscreen.
In the evening, I cleanse with CeraVe cleanser; exfoliate every other day with Biologique Recherche Lotion P50; I then dampen my skin with Avene thermal water (clean water with minerals) and hydrate with The Ordinary Buffet serum; once absorbed I apply Adapalene cream (prescription retinol) and then I either use La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm or an oil from The Ordinary.

I have heard that hyaluronic acid needs to put on damp skin and then something more occlusive in top to hold in moisture and also better used in more humid vs dry climate. I have experimented with this. Thanks for video Trinny - so fun and I agree with so much. I am 50 and skin changes!

Instead of buying the quite expensive vitamin C powder from Dr Sebagh, you can buy ascorbic acid powder at the supermarket (usually at the spice shelf) and put in yr cream. The vitamin C in creams oxidize and probably aren't that active, better to buy it in ampulls for fresh and active vitamin C

I think there comes a time when an Rx is the only way to go. I used Perricone for years and looked 15 years younger than my age. But when I hit 45 I started to age. (some of it I am sure was due to medical conditions I developed) I added Retin-A.. helped a bit. Started on Obagi… helped a bit more. But THEN I started on a prescribed protocol of ZO Skin Health and my skin transformed. I will be 50 this year and I have zero lines/wrinkles/sagging/sun spots and I do not need to wear foundation. I only wear his tinted 50 SPF sunscreen and my skin glows. Never had an injection of anything - it is all down to his research and products. For people who have a lot of damage to their skin, he does this deep peel which completely transforms the skin. Takes years off AND it does not thin the skin. All his products work to make the skin stronger, thicker and act like young skin. I can attest that this is indeed true. I don't even need a moisturizer because my skin behaves as it did when I was young. Such a simple protocol - I love it. BTW, I am really looking forward to my Trinny E2E, Lip to Cheek, and bronzers that should arrive on TUESDAY! I have been following Trinny London since the launch and I love how these creme colors can be applied to sheerly. It is going to be nice to have makeup that enhances my healthy glow instead of my usual powders that matte it down.

Hi Tammy, I'm not a dermatologist but ideally on cleansed skin that is completely dry. Start slowly and build up to every night ( depends on % and type that you're using) You can use moisturiser on top if need be, depending on skin type. If you need to buffer the retinol use moisturiser first... Hope this helps

Like Trinny said, get your skin clean and exfoliated and then start to apply your serums/actives and then moisturiser is last step.
If you get confused then try to apply lightest to heaviest.
Consider the texture of the products - is it lightweight and watery or thick and oily?
Water-based serums will go first, then gels, then creams, then oils on top.
Oils are the top layer that goes last because they seal everything in. Remember that if oil goes first then anything you put on top of it will fail to penetrate. You might have noticed in the kitchen that oil will always sit on top of the water and won't mix in!
      Hope that helps?
