A little fun fact : the title of this movie - Return of the Jedi, refers to the return and redemption of a Jedi long thought dead.

Vader's mask was more than a mask. It was part of a system that helped him to breathe properly. The Emperor's lightning strikes caused that respiratory system to malfunction.

=D Thank you, King Gar, for the shout out! I'm glad I could help.
2:55 - Yeah, it's only been a year (timeline wise) since Empire Strikes Back, but Luke definitely has matured quite a bit.
3:35 - Yep. Just like in chess (I noticed the board behind you), first, you position your pieces, then you strike. :)
10:06- Yes, Yoda has become one with The Force, like Obi-Wan did.
10:35 - "From a certain point of view." is the kind of thing that you realize as you get older. Obi-Wan's speech here resonates really hard with me, more now than it ever has. "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." Think about that. One man's Freedom Fighter is another man's Terrorist. It all depends on your point of view.
11:30 - LOL! Yeah, but remember, neither of them knew they were siblings. Also, Lucas was originally going to create a new character to be Luke's sister, but he changed his mind and made Leia his sister.
11:45 - Minor detail here: Notice that the route from the surface to the main reactor isn't straight this time. In the first Death Star, the shafts were straight, which is why the rebels only needed to drop the torpedoes down the shaft. Because it's not straight, they actually have to fly in and deliver it personally.
13:15 - The species name isn't said in the movie, but they are called "Ewoks". The backstory here is that Lucas wanted a "primitive" species to help bring down the Empire. It's really a mirror held up at the Vietnam war, where an army defeated a technologically superior army. Vietnam had ended just a couple of years before the first Star Wars movie came out, so it was still fresh in everyone's minds.
14:55 - Yeah, they're cute.... but a lot of people miss the tiny detail that the Ewoks were going to eat our heroes. Not that it's wrong, per se, but that's kinda dark, if you think about it.
    17:03 - If you've ever kissed a sibling, you know. ;)
20:01 - Ian McDiarmid played the Emperor. He is a fantastic actor with a long list of roles to his name, but this is the one he's best known for.
21:50 - Look closely at Vader's left hand. He is holding Luke's lightsaber. When Luke "snaps", he uses the Force to rip it from Vader's hand, and go on the attack. This is a very missable detail. I only spotted it a few years ago.
25:02 - The whole suit is a life support system.
Going back a bit, when Luke cut off Vader's right hand, he saw the robotic nature of it. He realized that his vision in the cave on Dagobah was coming true, that he would end up just like his father if he followed the same path (the dark side). That's part of what made him turn back. Yes, he DID channel the Dark Side for a moment, so he had a taste of its power. But he also remembered Obi-Wan's words; "He's more machine, now, than man. Twisted and evil." Still, Luke held out hope that he could still turn his father back to the light.
From here on out, you can go chronologically. Fortunately, Disney+ has a "Timeline Order" playlist, which makes it easier. Episode I, Episode II, The Clone Wars (animated series), Episode III, The Bad Batch (animated series), Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Rebels (animated series), Rogue One, Episode IV, Episode V, Episode VI, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Episode VII, Episode VIII, Episode IX.
The animated series are worth watching, but Clone Wars is 7 seasons long, and the first couple are a bit tedious to get through. The animation gets better over time. The Bad Batch picks up where Clone Wars leaves off, and so far, only 1 season has been released. Andor still has 3 episodes left in its first season. The Mandalorian's 3rd season is coming in February, but takes place after the Book of Boba Fett, where the first 2 seasons take place before it.
I'm looking forward to seeing you watch the Prequels.

    • @IggyStardust1967
      @IggyStardust1967 Před rokem +5

Oh, and yeah, please do a "review" video of the entire Original Trilogy. I'm sure you still have some questions, which I can help with answering. Although, the Prequel Trilogy will answer some of them. Particularly "How did Anakin Skywalker fall to the Dark Side?" and "How did the Emperor rise to power?"
Also, there's no shame in crying over the death of the villain. I will say that the story of Anakin Skywalker is a tragic one, but you probably already figured that out.
Also, if you can find the movie "Fanboys", it's a good companion movie to Star Wars, and can be watched prior to Episode I (it contains no spoilers). There are a lot of cameos in it, which surprised me the first time I watched it. It takes place in our universe, in 1999, just prior to the release of Episode I. The story revolves around a group of Star Wars fans (hence the title, Fanboys) who go on an adventure to try to see a rough cut of Episode I, prior to its release in theaters. There is a funny part where they encounter a group of Star Trek fans, because at the time, you were either one or the other. The debate over which franchise is better can have some hilarious shenanigans involved. Personally, I'm a fan of both. I love science fiction as a whole, so I'm a fan of Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and many others. Star Wars is the one I know the most about, though.
It's funny to think back to when the Prequels came out... many Original Trilogy fans hated them. I've been in the minority there, because I loved them, and I've been quite vocal about my love for them. I will recommend that you have a box of tissues on hand when you watch Episode III. It's going to break your heart, especially if you watch the Clone Wars animated series first. On that, I'll recommend that you watch Episode III before watching the last 4 episodes of the Clone Wars series (season 7 episodes 9-12), as they take place at the same time (just from different perspectives), so, technically, those 4 episodes contain spoilers for the movie.
Another "also", is that you should watch "Empire of Dreams", which is a documentary about making the Original Trilogy. Of course, you'll see the original versions being shown, so expect some scenes to be different from the versions you just watched. But it's a really good documentary and doesn't contain any spoilers for what you haven't seen yet.

    1. Best guess is that Han was Jabba's "trophy" for about a year and a half before the rescue.
    2. Vader discovered Leia as Luke's sister because he could feel it in Luke.
Luke didn't know that until just before then.
    3. Luke's light saber is green because he lost his old one along with his hand so they
decided to make it green because it worked better in the desert background landscape.
    4. Everybody is freaking out because Luke and Leia kissed mostly because she was trying
to piss off Han. They didn't know they are related.
    5. The "I love you. I know" was written into the script to get Leia the shot to say it to Han.
    6. This was Warrick Davis'/Lead Ewok first acting gig. He was only 13.
Willow is his lead with Val Kilmer and worth a first time/share.😎
    7. Obvious CGI/start/stop with the race through the forest. Nobody in their right mind would go that fast.
    8. A little corn. Hans' reaction to Leia telling him Luke is her brother.
    9. Jedi is plural. With Luke and Leia leading the way they can reestablish the Jedi back into the picture.
    10. Ford wanted Han to die in this episode.
    11. This is the best of the original 6 George Lucas Star Wars. After this he sold it to Disney and everything changed. Sadly
If you want a good cry you must do "The Green Mile" with Tom Hanks. It's the GOAT

One very subtle though obvious in hindsight thing is the shift of the color of Lukes outfits through the movies, going from a white outfit in the first, to a gray in the second and finally to a solid black in the third. This may or may not represent his innocence/naivety/how close he is to the dark side of the force, depending on who you ask.

If you strike down a Sith master with hate, you become vulnerable to influence from the dark side and even potential possession by the spirit that was present in the Sith you just killed, which only furthers the strength and influence of the dark side. If you kill your enemy while defending yourself or protecting who you love, you are using light side power and therefore are protected from the dark.
Luke was about to kill the emperor out of hate and anger, so when Vader stopped him, he wasn't just protecting his master. He was also protecting his son from essentially becoming damned. You can make an argument that Vader was already swayed enough back to Anakin at that point that his decision to block Luke's blow was a noble one. And of course, when he threw the emperor over at the end, it was clearly an act of love there, so he was able to go back to the light.

Luke and Leia kissed, but neither new and neither did it again. Which means it must not have felt good for either, at all. Luke doesn't seem sad at all to learn she is his sister, and after Leia kissed Luke, she didn't mind kissing Han, knowing Han and Luke were friends and probably shared info. Which means she didn't care to hurt his feelings.
I like to think they were neutral but interested to know more about each other from the start, but the only kiss happened when Leia was overwhelmed by Han, but even after that, Luke didn't want to rejoin her, he wanted to go find Yoda. Which means there wasn't a romantic connection.
Otherwise, Luke would want to know that Leia was safe, and Leia would have objected to Han's touching her hands, then kissing her. She didn't, which means she didn't care for Luke that way.
They crossed the line without knowing it, for a prank, and never went near that again. So as painful as it is to see, you knowing they are brother and sister, get over it. It wasn't evil intentions.

Luke couldn't kill the emperor because it's not the way of a Jedi, Jedi can't act out of emotion and can't attack unarmed.
The Emperor was looking for a replacement for Darth Vader as his apprentice, and the Emperor and Vader are members of the Sith Order (opposition to the Jedi Order in some way), who have existed for many thousands of years according to the Rule of Two, which states that there can only be two Sith - the master and the apprentice, a master to embody the power of the dark side, and a apprentice to reach out to him, when a apprentice becomes stronger than a master, he challenges him, kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Emperor was simultaneously looking for a replacement for Vader with someone younger and more powerful and he was afraid of him, because Vader could find himself a secret disciple and try to kill the Emperor by taking his place. By the way, in the very name of Darth Vader, Darth is the title of a member of the Order of the Sith, so for example the emperor has the name Darth Sidious, but you will learn more about it in the prequels
You may also notice that the Jedi and the Sith have different force abilities, if in general terms, the Jedi use defensive abilities that can rarely cause direct damage, while the Sith use dark side abilities, such as force strangulation, force lightning. In theory, the Jedi can use them too, but this means direct use of the dark side, which will intoxicate the mind and after which it is difficult to stop, not to mention that it goes against the Jedi code

Keep in mind that Ep.1 takes place before the formation of the Empire, so there is no emperor and no Rebel Alliance yet. Instead, there is a Republic which is governed by a galactic congress of senators from all around the galaxy. The leader of the senate is the Supreme Chancellor, sort of like the president or prime minister of the Republic, who is elected every 4 years and has term limits. There is no military because there has been peace for 1,000 years. Instead, conflicts are negotiated and settled by the Jedi Knights, who serve the Republic but exist apart from it with their own hierarchies, traditions and rules. Centuries before, the Jedi apparently wiped out their ancient enemies, the Dark Lords of the Sith, warriors who used the dark side of the Force to try to conquer the galaxy.
By the time of Ep.1, the senate has become corrupt. Senators are open to bribery by huge, private corporations while the voices of the people are ignored. Corporations are so powerful and wealthy that they even have their senators in congress who manipulate the laws to their advantage. One such corporation is the Trade Federation, which controls most of the trade routes through the galaxy. They are the apparent antagonists of the story, but they are secretly in cahoots with a shadowy hooded figure who is pulling the strings from behind the scenes, unknown even to the Jedi.

Now you’re ready for the backstory of the prequels and the inserts. Episodes 1-3, Solo, Rogue One. Now you know the “what”, so those movies will give you the “how” and the “why”.

I think one misses the payoff of Anakin's redemption unless one has seen the prequels before ROTJ. Without the prequels, we don't know Anakin or even have a reason to care about him because we never got to know him. When Luke removes Vader's helmet, we finally get to see what Vader looks like. If we've seen the prequels, we're finally seeing Anakin again. It's a much different vibe. Plus, it makes the end scene of ROTJ make sense now that Hayden is in the scene instead of Sebastian Shaw.
    I have a lot more...

We didn't need the prequels to get the payoff. The prequels didn't exist for 16 years after this movie came out.

Don't be hung up on the Luke and Leah kiss because at the time they didn't know, plus She doesn't love Luke like that she loves Han. It wasn't as if all three movies had them kissing and with love scenes, they were just brief. If they were long and passionate and in all of the movies then it would be weird, but in context it's not.

You will know that univers match more, if you will watch the Clone wars, and you will feel third episode fully as masterpiece in star wars universe
Sith is an order of forceusers, who use the force through their emotions and use it for their own wishes, they try to take full freedom through it, the jedi is bloked all emotions and serve the force as monks, so all difference between sith and jedi is philosophy of ways of using the force, and the force influence both sides, so siths is becomes super emotionals and not very clean mide mans, and jedis becomes very closed and chained by their dogmatism
    The Sith Code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion
    Through passion, I gain strength
    Through strength, I gain power
    Through power, I gain victory
Through victory, my chains are broken
    The Force shall free me.
    The Jedi Code.
There is no emotion, there is peace
There is no ignorance, there is the knowledge
There is no passion, there is no serenity
There is no chaos, there is harmony
There is no death, there is the Force
Firstly, the Sith are a very ancient order, initially before the Jedi and the Sith there was a single order of force-sensitive beings who practiced a balance between the two sides of the force, which were named after the two moons of the planet on which this order existed, one was of dark stone, the other of light, thus the light and dark sides of the force appeared, which symbolized two different aspects of the force, emotional and emotionless. So after that, the council of this order decided to prohibit the interpretation of the force through aspects of the dark side and from the balance, they came only to the light side, so the Jedi Order was born, and the Sith appeared from the apostates of the order, expelled from it at the time of rejection of the dark side, they were forced to hide from the Jedi in unknown regions, where they found the planet Korriban, which was inhabited by a race of red-skinned humanoids who called themselves the Sith, they had a very strong connection with the dark side, so these apostates led the indigenous the people of this planet assimilated among them and began to rule, calling themselves the Sith Lords, so their order was born, which was the opposition to the Jedi Order
thirdly, the Jedi are not exactly good in the first instance, they are bound by the dogmas of the order and the laws of a largely corrupt republic, a lot of things happened through the fault of the Jedi that will lead to the birth of the empire
Oh, yeah, definitely, more information about the Sith, early in the days of the old Republic, over 3000 years before the events of the film, the Sith were as much as the Jedi and their order functioned as had many temples and members and etc., also there were two huge intergalactic state, the Republic and the Sith Empire, each of which had their pros and cons, but unlike the Jedi who lead an ascetic way of life, directly ruled by the Sith Empire, the Emperor was a member and head of the order, so in those days, not all Sith held the title "Darth", is not even considered by the lords, only members of the dark Council, the analogue of the Jedi Council, was the Sith names and the title Darth (Darth Nox, Darth Tenebrous, Darth Marr, Darth Baras), but after he was born Sith, who was called the Darth Bane, he studied the history of the order and realized that all the problems of the Sith was due to their lust for power and eternal betrayals for the sake of power and strength, which pushed their dark side and who condemned the whole military of the company and took the best of them, so Darth Bane came up with the rule of two, which was that there should be only two survivors of the Sith the teacher and the student, the teacher, the power to bring the pupil to her to pull when the student surpasses the master, he must kill him to take his place, thus the order is constantly evolving unlike the Jedi, who with the passage of time were stagnant, creating this rule, Darth Bane gathered all the members of the order of Sith lords to meet and staged the attack, after killing them all, the Sith Empire in the time it collapsed under its own weight and under the attacks of the Republic and the Sith were hunted down and exterminated the Jedi, after the attack, Darth Bane went underground, old temples were abandoned and the sith Empire has fallen, so the Jedi decided that the Sith were all destroyed, unaware that the order was reformed and still operates, whose main objective is the revival of the Empire and revenge for the collapse of the Jedi order and the time when the Sith were hunted down and slaughtered by jedis

A great reaction to quite a great entry of the Star Wars franchise.
Since you watched the special edition of the movie may I recommend that you look up the original versions' ending of Episode VI?
There are a few differences that are noteworthy and interesting.
For example there is a different song playing, but more importantly Anakins' force ghost appearing at the end is played by the actual actor of Darth Vader, giving him the appropriate age.
Hayden Christensen who appears in this version was only added later since he played Anakin in the prequels, forming an additional connection.
Personally I'd have liked it if they kept the original actor here, though I guess this version makes sense as well.
