Even being enslaved could not break him. Omar ibn Said is in jannah now free from the cruelty of slavery may his soul forever rest and his legacy never forgotten.

I'm glad to see such a great story about our brothers and sisters that were shipped out of their respective native home land / home and enslaved them. According to oral tradition in my native home, our parents use to tell us that most of the people that were shipped to the Americans are from the mande empire
and are from the mandinka tribes and also are Muslims. As a child I didn't understand that but Ibn Alsaid's story have reflected my memory back to those days. May Allah have mercy on his gentle sole Ameen.

He was always a Muslim. He may have outwardly portrayed himself as a christian to gain acceptance into the community but his heart remained a Muslim.
I remembered during my primary educational level in Ghana I had similar experience where I pretend as a Christians so that I can save myself from abuses (beatings/caning) from our christian teachers. I was forced to attend church services and even attended real mass services for a roman catholic church near the school. The teachers were focus on us (the Muslim student) such that they punished us for lateness without punishing christian students who did not even attend the service at all.
We remained muslims.
